Pretty sure that the old classics are exempt from our annual inspection requirement. Anyone know the regulation for this and how old the car must be to be exempt from inspection?

I heard it was a 50/50 shot. But then again how many peopel really take the time to understand a car restoration??? I spent 4 years on research before I started on my car. Alot of time was spent on various classic car forums reading and learning about new techniques and materials.

YMMV

Hit or miss with these Specialty Hot Rod Shops. Google them to check out their Reviews both good and bad (mixed). Certainly visit with Tom and Bubba there at their Hot Rod Shop to get some ideas of what you may have in mind with your Ride. Good luck and keep us posted on what you can find out.

Kinda ashamed as some of the stuff Tom and Bubba turn out is pretty damn good depending on what they choose and care to focus on. Messing around with old rusty temperamental classics is a tough business without a doubt filled with lofty expectations. If we only had the equipment and skill and time to do it ourselves, that would be Ideal. Leap of faith when we "farm it out" to these "needy" shops that promise the impossible. Perhaps the best advice is to find an operation that has earned favorable reviews which reflect a trustworthy and ethical experience NOT one that is anyway involved in a pattern of lawsuits, threats, and just plain bad PR and BS from the principles. Too many greedy crooks out there ready to take the Old car Enthusiast on a long expensive and often disappointing RIDE! BUYER BEWARE!

It would appear that Bubbas operation has left the area and has now somehow reestablished themselves in Florida. Their reputation here in Fairfax was hit or miss at best. I wonder what was left behind there at the old facility? The parking lot outside their facility here in Fairfax was littered with many vintage cars that from what I could gather were customers that left them some deposit "Up Front" and were then left out there in the parking lot to pretty much rot. What an operation they had going on. Too bad the classic car folks in FLA may not be aware of all that happened while they were here in VA especially if Bubbas has changed their name down there to distance themselves from the not so flattering reviews that can be found with a simple GOOGLE search! Let the consumer beware!

He said their New and improved Hot Rod Reality Show would become the next American Chopper and lead to another "Telly" award. Wonder what is the delay with their new show? From the pictures they posted on their Website, seems they already have a Production Stage and Screening Room down there in the new Florida facility. Coming soon I guess?

My experience: paid $800 to get rust cut out and repaired on frame and four tires moved to a new set of wheels and installed on car. A little pricey I guess, but I wanted the thing to pass inspection and the frame was the last thing I needed to pass inspection. For good measure, they sent me to a good place. I never met Tom or Bubba, barely know they exist (I hear about their show, but have no idea where or when it airs). I dealt primarily with Rob, and saw a couple other folks working there the couple times I showed up. One of my wheels wasn't holding air (I got em used at Carlisle for $75 altogether) and had them fix it. charged me a little bit of nothing (like $30 or something) and said if it leaks again within a year, they'll take care of it. It just started leaking again last week, so I'm gunna try to take it back. I liked Rob, some of the other guys seemed like the typical mechanic demographic: kinda run-down lookin. That doesn't bother me a ton, but it didn't look like a group of guys who were passionate about their trade. Regardless, I had a good experience with Rob and despite the fact that their credit card machine seemed to be down about every time I went in there, they seemed pretty transparent about what they were charging me for. Maybe it's cause I gave the impression that I knew stuff about cars (because I do most of my own work, but have no experience with welding or painting, and don't have the tools to mount tires to wheels) or perhaps that I'm on a tight budget (I'm only 23 and hadn't yet graduated when I brought it in back in March). I don't know, I give the place a 75/100 I guess. I wouldn't give any other place any better really. They all charge more than it would cost to do yourself, they all markup materials (not that I needed materials) and frankly if you're expecting them to do something you're not comfortable with doing yourself, then you're risking them not doing it to the level of perfection or precision that you're looking for in your vehicle.

I would consider myself satisfied, I'll be more satisfied if when I ask about fixing the wheel that they'll honor their claim of a putting the wheel work under warranty (since receipts are basically the equivalent of a fast food receipt, with even less description, and it was only a verbal promise). My hopes is that if Rob can really be the one to run the place, he could probably turn around the place's appalling image. I haven't seen anything forthright to concern me, and I'd like to think I'm a pretty perceptive guy, but this is pretty much the first location of anything anywhere that I actually feel unnerved by the number of reviews. I can't tell who's lying or who's telling the truth, and whether all the negativity is coming from just one customer, or multiple, or if it's a combination of a customer and ex-employee, I don't know. It's crazy complex, and since I got into old cars on my own, I don't know anyone personally who has ever known anything about the place other than there's a bunch of old cars parked out front. But this is the demographic of people who calls them "cool cars," whereas I'd refer to the majority of those sitting out there as either husks, or cars in need of urgent medical attention.

I do wish all of this negativity when speaking about the place cleared up so I could just know the facts. 1 star on Yelp with 15 of the 19 reviews hidden due to low-ratings of the reviews themselves... it's terribly fishy and it's apparent that at least one person has a shit ton of time to be working so hard to attack this place, regardless of whether it's warranted or not.

Thanks for sharing your experience Paul. I would agree that it is hit or miss with these old temperamental Vintage cars when it comes to the repairs and those that want to venture into this finicky business. Unfortunately the Bubbas Work Shop here in Fairfax has had more BAD reviews over the years than good both here on the Internet and by Word of Mouth. In Fact a lot of us in the Old Car Hobby here feel Tom and Bubba left the area for Jupiter Florida (Fled?) to try again with their Repair Shop Concept and somehow get a fresh start from perhaps Hard lessons learned from all this grief and negativity they attracted while doing business here in Fairfax prior to their Departure. Good Luck with that!

Whatever the case, these problems and bad experiences here in Fairfax unfortunately were Real and pissed off a lot of folks they came into contact with through their operation royally! So your thoughts that this "Negativity" and poor internet reviews perhaps were coming from just one or two people is certainly not the case. "You Reap what what you Sow" applies directly to how Tom and Bubba conducted Business here in Fairfax. "Hit or miss" with more problems and questionable ethics and behavior than successes.

As for Rob picking up where Tom and Bubba left off, sounds like he too has learned in a good way from their multiple mistakes BUT also realize that their current location here in Fairfax is a Temporary one as that strip mall they occupy will very soon be leveled for "Development"!

Would Anyone else here on the Fairfax Underground like to share their experiences both good and bad with Bubbas East Coast Rods and Customs here in Fairfax?

I live in Jupiter, Florida and was in the Hot Rod business long before it became popular on reality TV. Never heard of Bubba until I drove by their new shop here and saw the sign. So, being curious and having a garage full of cars I stopped in to meet the new guys in town. I first met Bubba who seemed ok but a bit young. Then I met Tom and within ten minutes knew I was in the presence of a world class bull shitter that I would never trust or let work on one of my cars. I then googled them to see what's up and came across this forum which pretty much confirmed my initial opinion.

Jupiter is a small town of 50 K people. It's full of wealthy retired folks that don't need to work and have plenty of money to indulge their automotive desires. We also have a number of pretty good specialty shops that can and do turn out some pretty amazing cars. If Bubba doesn't keep his nose clean here he won't be around long. His reputation from Fairfax has followed him here and rumors are already floating around about people being unhappy, cops being called, cars removed by owners and rent not being paid.

What we really don't need is another scam artist turning people away from the hobby we all enjoy. It will only be a matter of time in a small community like Jupiter.

Interesting Developments down there in Jupiter regarding Bubbas new Rod and Custom Shop. I understand they were recently featured in the Local Newspaper which sounds like good and positive press. Hope they have learned their lessons in Good Customer Service from all the issues that they left behind here in Fairfax. They claim that Young Bubba is one of the Best Builders in the Hot Rod and Custom Industry. Whatever the case, keep us posted on how things are going there both good and bad. Their new reality TV program on the Velocity Channel should be very revealing to say the least!

Yes, they did get a nice write up in the Palm Beach Post that was very positive as well as doing some nice promotional and marketing moves that have put them on the local radar. Tom is apparently a non stop marketing machine with a lot of practice convincing gullible people to believe what he says. The writer that wrote the story I believe is an independent writer that submitted the article to the paper and they printed it. The only thing the article forgot to include was, "advertisement" above the headline.

Whatever,, if they. Can do quality work at competitive prices and provide good customer service they'll do just fine here. There's plenty of business despite being a small town. If they don't , word will spread quickly and they won't be here long. Their history has followed them to some degree and people are cautious.

Perhaps the Repair and Restoration Shops there in Jupiter have met there match in this Master Bubba? The Velocity Channel must see something very special with this Father and Son Team to give them their own very special TV Show Hot Rod Reality! Master car builder my ass. How do you become, "one of the top five car builders in the country", at the age of 24? Only in his fathers eyes. His work and knowledge are below average IMO.

Try and find an episode of their TV show on Velocity. It doesn't exist. He's got plenty of Youtube videos but so does every other car builder out there. Big difference between a real TV show and Youtube videos. They've been talking up their non existant TV show for so long even they believe it.

If they spent more time building cars than they do going to the gym, tatto parlor, and bragging about a TV show they desperately want, their work would speak for itself and there would be no need for the constant BS.

I truly wish them success but doubt they will acheive it without a TV show. They may become reality stars but they will never become car builder stars with the type of work they do. There are many fine automotive craftsman and coach builders in the country but Bubba isn't one of them. At least not yet and until he builds something of such quality that it wins a major national show like the L.A. Roadster Show. Until then, he isn't working on any of my cars and isn't one of the top five builders in the country. LMAO

You make a valid point that it is not likely that Bubba is in that Elite Group of Car Builders in this country (obviously!) and that statements such as this are simply in the "mind" of his Dad Tom. Oh well, Guess it is Tom that is the Master of Marketing and obviously there are plenty of gullible people with these old cars that want to believe this!

You are right about their "TV Show" as well since there exists NO connection with their "Hot Rod Reality"and the Velocity Channel (or any other Cable Network for that matter!).

Looks like we have a Father Son Team that Builds themselves up and their accomplishments Greatly with No facts to substantiate these lofty claims.

These types of "Shady" activities are what caused them so many problems here in Fairfax and no doubt led to them Fleeing to Florida to let them start with a clean slate BUT it appears they have not learned their lessons and continue to operate as they did before. Keep us posted on their antics and let's hope the folks down there in Jupiter do their due diligence and research Before deciding to sign on with Bubba and Tom!

Makes me wonder if they got off to a much better start down there in the Lucrative Palm Beach Florida Collector Car Market with the new Bubbas Hot Rod Shop. Plenty of Big money for Tom to "Farm In" with their new Jupiter Enterprise.

Interesting that they can start fresh with a clean slate after all the missteps, Bad Reviews, and Customer Service Dissatisfaction that Plagued them over the years here in Fairfax before they bolted to Florida. Who the heil is Bankrolling all these ventures for Tom and Bubba?

Is the shop here in Fairfax still open? Their location's strip mall is soon to go under the Wrecking ball for future Development.

Again, it would be interesting to be a "Fly on Wall" down there in Florida to see if they changed their way of doing business for the better. They can only relocate so many times before their reputation catches up with them.

So it's Bubba and Tom's style to move to a smaller space on the back of a building that barely has an alley? You've "expanded" like Obama fixed the economy.

Enjoy the view but long term plans are to level that entire street too and start over.

However, congratulations on being the only business in that entire building (of which there are a lot) that speaks English. Bubba speak is English isn't it?

Gone But perhaps Not Forgotten? Thoughts?

Kinda Sad considering this Fairfax "Gasoline Alley" was once the Home base and National Headquarters for the East Coast's premier car, truck & motorcycle facility with a top rated radio show and their new Hot Rod Reality TV show was about to begin airing.

In addition, Tom and Bubba's Fairfax Hot Rod Shop was voted number 1 by the US Commerce Association for the last 4 years in a row and they were inducted into the Business Hall of Fame.

What could have happened to Bubba and his one time Small Business Success? How could they have fallen so quickly? Baffling.

Perhaps they pissed off more customers here in Fairfax during their short run than they made happy. The people have spoken and gasoline alley is no more.

I wonder how they are getting along with their new customers now that they have fled to Jupiter Florida?

Tom' are you reading all of this? Thoughts?

Husband surprised me by taking my 69 Firebird to be painted. When he took me to Bubbas to pick it up even I could see poor work Paint runs, door jams not painted, convertible top mis-cut. The guy wouldn't talk to me only husband. Left it to be redone, went back, still crappy. Said well it isn't a $10,000 job! So I posted a factual negative yelp comment. They called husband and told him I need to take it down. He laughed and said he doesn't tell me what to do! They called and I had picked up phone, the guy started out by telling me how they did offer to fix it. I replied yeah but still had baddddd areas like runs which is a reflection of poor job, I hung up. Then they called back and threatened to sue me, go ahead I said. Called again and supposedly was an "an attorney" I told him go for it take me to court. I am retired on SS and have lots of time oh my hands. Never heard back! Wish I had know about their crappy service for the average guy! Glad they are gone, sorry Jupiter!!

Sorry to hear that they turned your wonderful Birthday gift into such a harsh upsetting experience. And to think they were ready to sue you as a result of their nasty and unethical practices. Surprised that many of their customers they swindled did not turn around and sue them for their eventual Heartache and financial damages!

Unfortunately I too was taken for a ride by Tom when he got a hold of my car and kept jacking up the fees until I threatened legal action against them. Happy that they are no longer viable here in Fairfax and have left the state. Probably the folks in Jupiter have to learn the hard way as these guys are not going to change their stripes.

I too was a victim of Bubba's Fairfax,VA facility. The trans in my '86 Vette went down on the 4th of July 2015.It took me two months to get my car back. The trans supplier had recommended them,he was quite surprised when I called him.The trans supplier and a local trans repair shop took over and I finally got my car back.I just had a Borla stainless exhaust installed , Bubba's broke a manifold stud and replaced it with a bolt and miss aligned the entire system. They ran the car into their lift arm putting a hefty scratch and leaving matching paint. The trans shop cleaned off the paint and did a fair job in aligning the exhaust. So,the trans supplier paid the bill of the local trans shop and I made friends with those guys as I stopped at the local Harley shop and they were there.Car runs and shifts good. Got dual warranties from the trans supplier and Farfax trans repair shop.I'm going to ask Tom for some reimbursement. I'd like the exhaust put straight and the body work done.Hope I have a better outcome than most of these posts.

That is ashamed. Surprised they still have an operation here in Fairfax after they shut down their original place in that back alley behind the Strip Mall. My guess is that their current team without Bubba is a bunch of beginners who will learn on the job through trial and error. Would explain the bad experience you had with your classic Corvette. Looks like you were able to get it back in shape at the trans Shop. Good luck with Tom helping you out with your exhaust and the body work and hoping he will make it right for you. Please keep us posted on the outcome.

Anyone have knowledge of what is going on down there in Florida? Are they still in business? Makes you wonder.

Be very weary of any business that has recognition from the "US Commerce Association." This is a cam group that gives accolades to any business will to pay a fee. You can find more details about it at bbb.org.

So, I think this implies that Bubba's was either naive and/or dishonest in its business and that has ultimately contributed to it's upheaval.

That is Interesting Scammy. It would appear that Tom and Bubba were less than truthful about their Repair and Restoration operation here in FairFax and from what You see with their damning Internet Reviews, They Pissed a lot of their clients off in a real big way. Some Lawsuits in there as well!

Hard to believe they had (now have?) a Reality show on the Velocity Channel though. Or is this Hogwash as well?

The old car folks down in Florida should be on guard now that Bubbas has morphed into a place down there in Jupiter!

Anyone have any knowledge of Bubbas's FairFax Hot Rod Shop under new management?

Rumor has it that Tom's daughter Jessi has now taken over as facility manager after they discovered previous manager Rob M. had been robbing them for the last two years following Tom and Bubba leaving for Florida.

The saga continues?

Everyone knows the Deal. Tom and his c level mechanic son ran off to florida to live the fancy life on someone elses dime. I worked for these slime balls about 6 years ago for less than 6 months and could not take the bullshit lies. Anything that would get done Tom would make bubba take credit for it, They would lie to people and tell them they built cars they put a low end tune up on. They were basically forced out of town and have become the laughing stock of Northern Virginia. I have never in my life seen such over priced work if thats what you want to call it.They are rip off artists, treat employees like shit. His daughter was in and out of jail for years, and does not know the automotive industry. finally an end to the rotten thieves. C.

They probably sold off her vintage GTO and used the money and her stolen 50K to make their move to Jupiter Fla!

looks like this will turn out to be a misunderstanding and a big mistake. Bubbas is high volume and handles a lot of customs and restorations and it is not uncommon that one or two cars will slip through the cracks.

let's just let this case run it's course and not be so quick to judge Tom and Bub.

Not uncommon for your shop maybe.

Meanwhile every other shop in the country takes the hit for it.

It's absolutely amazing that in this day and age of electronic information that you are even allowed to look at any car in public. Much less let "one or two" slip through the cracks.

I watched the South Beach Classics episode that included Bubbas & the 57 T-bird. Like a train wreck just couldn't turn away. Three take aways from the Bubbas portion of the show:

1st - when asked about the budget by Ted, Bubba states they plan to "eat" anything over the budget. That's easy to do when you take money for parts & labor you have not nor intend to perform.

2nd - there was genuine surprise in Bubbas voice when he stated "we finally finished one on time". Clearly not something they are accustomed to doing evidenced by the overflow of cars rusting away in the parking lot in Fairfax.

3rd - Bubba stated he had "XYZ" (don't remember who) install and this is a direct quote from the show - "A 400 horsepower transmission". I had to flip back 3 times to verify what he said because I was laughing so hard. I guess more importantly Master Bubba was able to convince the producers & editors that the transmission has 400HP because they left it in.

I will say on TV the car looked good but anything can happen on TV - think David Blaine levitating. Ted even stated it did not need a restoration. So a color change, interior & a purple engine is doing it Bubba Style.

Absolutely Wadhesay Bucky's T-Bird Look Great! Very Special car that Ted Vernon valued at 200K on last night's show!

You all have to admit Tom and Bub looked pretty damn good on the Velocity Channel with Ted Vernon's South Beach Classics! Our dream of Reality TV Stars with rave reviews. Velocity has offered us our own show "If YOU Dream It Bubbas Can Build It"

What was done with Bucky Dent's T-Bird is what we call a "Frame On" Restoration! Master Bubbas is one of the few in the industry that is capable of doing this technique. The car speaks for itself!

Doing it Bubbas and South Beach Style!

Mot Sabbub
You are obviously affiliated with Bubbas. Can you explain what Master Bubba did to make a "400 horsepower transmission"? I am certain wheels, paint & upholstery does not take a $35K car to $200K - I don't care how many times Bubba signs it. True & correct E-birds sell for half that much.

"What was done with Bucky Dent's T-Bird is what we call a "Frame On" Restoration! Master Bubbas is one of the few in the industry that is capable of doing this technique"

What Master bater - oops Master Bubba did was not restoration of any kind - frame on or off. He painted a car, threw a set of modern wheels on it & new interior - most likely subbed out the paint & upholstery to an outside shop. There are tens of thousands of donkey d*cks that can do that. Maybe this is where some of the issues are with Bubbas East Coast Rods & Customs, selling a paint job as a restoration & overcharging customers - raising their expectations & delivering a sub-standard product. Saying nothing about taking money & never doing the work, using customer supplied parts on other projects etc. Get over your selves.

Keep dreaming Paul Sr & Paul Jr. At least the OCC guys turned out a decent product.
