Obama Jokes at Jobs Council: 'Shovel-Ready Was Not as Shovel-Ready as We Expected' That is funny unless you're unemployed.

http://nation.foxnews.com/president-obama/2011/06/13/obama-jokes-jobs-council-shovel-ready-was-not-shovel-ready-we-expected

President Obama's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness met today in Durham, NC at Cree Inc., a company that manufactures energy-efficient LED lighting. One of the Council's recommendations to President Obama was to streamline the federal permit process for construction and infrastructure projects. It was explained to Obama that the permitting process can delay projects for "months to years ... and in many cases even cause projects to be abandoned ... I'm sure that when you implemented the Recovery Act your staff briefed you on many of these challenges." At this point, Obama smiled and interjected, "Shovel-ready was not as ... uh .. shovel-ready as we expected." The Council, led by GE's Jeffrey Immelt, erupted in laughter.

The Obama administration promised the Recovery Act ("the stimulus") would prevent the jobless rate from going over 8%. It now stands at 9.1%.

Wow, people have already started with the bumpers stickers? Damn there's going to be a huge support and signs for Obama 2012 this year.

Let's face it, Obama has this one in the bag.

Well, if the Republicans screwed things up so bad in 8 years, then the Democrats sending in Obama to act as the Draino to clean the pipes has got to be one of the biggest failures in several years.

Well the truth is, at the command of Rush Limbaugh any Rep Governor who dared cooperate with Obama on the Stimulus was declared dead. This environment has made recovery very difficult. Republicans should be ashmaed of themselves. They sold US workers under the bus for political gain.

Well, as conservative politicians, why should they have accepted Obama's hand-outs? There were a lot of limitations tied to that money. For example, the states and localities could use the money to hire teachers. However, the real problem would surface during the 2nd year for the new teachers when the localities didn't have enough funds of their own to keep them on the payroll.

With that being said, how were the Republican leaders being stupid by rejecting the money? Besides, it's not "free" money. Sooner or later, it will all come back and bite us in the ass with some major tax changes. Keep your eyes open and hold on. It's going to be one wild ride.

There's not much he can do about jobs. Taxes are low, corporations are making tons of money, they just aren't hiring, and the Republicans in Congress would never let some kind of New Deal-type jobs program go through, as effective and necessary as it may be. What can he do with the GOP blocking everything but more tax cuts? Half the stimulus was tax cuts when it should have been spending just to satisfy them in the first place.

Obama still blames Bush for everything but here is why that isn't working anymore.

Bush fought 2 wars (Now we're fighting 4)

Bush funded wars w/ deficit spending (Obama has quadrupled that)

Bush cut taxes (Obama extended them)

Bush opened Gitmo (Obama says it wasn't as shut down-able as he thought)

Just like the "shovel ready" jobs weren't as shovel ready as he thought.

He wants to train 10 million engineers to spur jobs growth or whatever but then tells Ann Curry automation like ATM's are responsible for high unemployment.

Since the "Summer of Recovery" began last summer we have lost 1.2 million jobs. Those damn ATM machines are killers!

And what do you think Libya is going to be? Or Yemen?

Obama had an opportunity to get out of Afghanistan - he probably should have taken it, seeing as how Bin Laden was in Pakistan. If anyone can seriously explain what rationale makes any sense at all for why we got into Libya I will be amazed - because if it was good enough for Libya, then whatever reason Bush gave for Iraq had to be better.

We didn't do a full-scale invasion of Libya, which makes the situation vastly different from Afghanistan or Iraq.

So today we get Obama's answer to the War Powers Act:

War Powers Act Does Not Apply to Libya, Obama Argues
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/16/us/politics/16powers.html
On that day, the Vietnam-era law’s 60-day deadline for terminating unauthorized hostilities appeared to pass. But the White House argued that the activities of United States military forces in Libya do not amount to full-blown “hostilities” at the level necessary to involve the section of the War Powers Resolution that imposes the deadline.

“We are acting lawfully,” said Harold Koh, the State Department legal adviser, who expanded on the administration’s reasoning in a joint interview with White House Counsel Robert Bauer.

The two senior administration lawyers contended that American forces have not been in “hostilities” at least since April 7, when NATO took over leadership in maintaining a no-flight zone in Libya, and the United States took up what is mainly a supporting role — providing surveillance and refueling for allied warplanes — although unmanned drones operated by the United States periodically fire missiles as well.

They argued that United States forces are at little risk in the operation because there are no American troops on the ground and Libyan forces are unable to exchange meaningful fire with American forces. They said that there was little risk of the military mission escalating, because it is constrained by the United Nations Security Counsel resolution that authorized use of air power to defend civilians.

“We are not saying the president can take the country into war on his own,” Mr. Koh said. “We are not saying the War Powers Resolution is unconstitutional or should be scrapped, or that we can refuse to consult Congress. We are saying the limited nature of this particular mission is not the kind of ‘hostilities’ envisioned by the War Powers Resolution.” ...

Funny - I thought a lot of this came about because of Vietnam and the fact that Nixon was dropping bombs on Cambodia covertly.

War Powers Resolution
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Powers_Resolution

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode50/usc_sec_50_00001541----000-.html
(c) Presidential executive power as Commander-in-Chief; limitation
The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to
(1) a declaration of war,
(2) specific statutory authorization, or
(3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces.

The action in Libya is clearly "hostilities" involving US armed forces - whether they are drones, missiles, or material support. Bush was required to jump through a series of hoops to get involved in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Again, his justifications were on much more solid ground - if you remember when he tried to use the "humanitarian" argument (as one of many reasons) he was told that it was not humanitarian to start a war to end that crisis (Saddam killing his people). What is the mission in Libya again? Talk about getting us into an open ended conflict - and I am sorry, but no attempt to camouflage this by saying it is NATOs operation is even close.

YEah, the libtards talked up the stimulus like it was the 21st centurys verrsion of FDR's Recovery Act.

We were told about how the road and bridge projects were going to "lift all ships" (sound familiar?). Not just the construction contractors, but the banks, the local economies- everyone from the local diner to the paper boy was going to see a "trickle down effect" (sound familiar?) of the "well spent" tax payer money.

That Obama can smugy make ha-ha about his lack of real understanding of what he's doing is a sad reminder of what fools are society and media are for promoting this incompetent quack.

Let's explore this shovel ready crap at a local level shall we?

Anyone noticed all the repaving of highways lately? Rt 50 through Chantilly, Lee Highway from Falls Church to Nutley Street?

Noticed where the money came from? These jobs were "shovel ready"......they just had to order the shovel and apparently the Chinese wouldn't sent it.

It gets better. Notice the company doing most of the repaving? Yeah, that's right, a Maryland company doing paving work in Virginia (that commutting fuel bill must be a bitch but that's okay..I'm sure it's a cost plus job meaning we'll be stuck with the extra charge).

It gets even better yet.......the company that got the jobs (Ft. Meyer Construction Company) used the old "we're owned by a minority" deal to get the job.

The best part is that literally, Lee Highway was a smoother ride with all the potholes before it was repaved.

Now THERE is shovel ready in action for ya. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I get tired of hearing how low the taxes are and how we should be happy. Meanwhile gas is 4+dollars a gallon and the EPA is nailing us with every regulation they can find to drive up the cost of everything we use. This is why businesses aren't hiring every time you get ahead there is another price increase.
Bush may not have been the best president but at least he was questioned by the media and they demanded an answer. If Bush ever did what Obama has done there would be riots in the streets and calls for impeachment.

Congressman Weiner Joins Jobless Ranks

He's a 46-year-old with a pregnant wife, and now he's out of work. What are his prospects?

Plenty of Americans find themselves jobless in today's economy, but not many are former congressmen who tweeted themselves out of elected office. Anthony Weiner, a onetime contender for New York City mayor, announced his resignation from Congress Thursday after weeks of being pilloried.

Mr. Weiner admitted earlier this month to engaging in lewd online exchanges with six women and then repeatedly lying about it as part of a botched cover-up.

Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York said he is resigning his seat in Congress due to the fallout from his lewd online messages to women. Devlin Barrett has details.
.
For the first time since he was elected to the New York City Council in 1991 at age 27, Mr. Weiner no longer holds a government office, and his prospects of holding elected office anytime soon appear dim. With the loss of his $174,000-a-year congressional salary, Mr. Weiner will soon learn what job opportunities are available now that his name has become a national punch line.

"I got into politics to help give voice to the many that simply did not have one," Mr. Weiner said at the news conference on Thursday announcing his resignation. "Now I'll be looking for other ways to contribute my talents to make sure we live up to that most New York and American of ideals: the idea that leading a family, a community and ultimately a country, is the thing that all unites us, the one thing we are all focused on."

Mr. Weiner didn't give any specifics on what he might actually do for work. An aide to the former congressman declined to comment Thursday on Mr. Weiner's future plans.

Timeline of Events

Friday, May 27: Weiner sends a waist-down photograph to a college student. He mistakenly codes it so thousands of his Twitter followers can see it.

Saturday, May 28: Weiner claims his account was hacked. Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart posts the first report about the lewd photo.

Wednesday, June 1: Weiner says he cannot say "with certitude" whether the photo was of him or not.

Monday, June 6: Weiner makes a profuse public apology, admitting to sending the photo and lying to protect himself.

Saturday, June 11: Weiner rebuffs calls to resign and announces he plans to seek treatment.

Thursday, June 16: Weiner announces his resignation from Congress.

Source: Associated Press
.
As hard as Mr. Weiner has fallen, there is a myriad of politicians who have moved past scandals and rebuilt their careers. Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in 2008 following revelations that he patronized high-priced prostitutes, and he's now the host of a prime-time show on CNN. Former President Bill Clinton (who officiated at Mr. Weiner's wedding to Huma Abedin, an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton) was impeached by the House following a sex scandal but not convicted by the Senate. He served out his term and now heads an international foundation and sometimes performs diplomatic missions for the U.S.

Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was accused of trying to sell President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate seat, became a reality-TV star, appearing on NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice." A federal jury was deliberating his fate on Thursday.

"The American public is in love with three things: beautiful women, athletes and public apologies," said George Regan, a public-relations executive who specialized in crisis communications when he worked at Boston City Hall. "It's not like Weiner killed anyone here. He's not a pedophile. He's got a couple loose screws. He goes into rehab, goes into a submarine for a few years, he can come back out."

Mr. Regan and others said the sordid nature of Mr. Weiner's downfall will pose challenges as he pursues a new career. The Internet is rife with photos of Mr. Weiner posing nude and semi-nude, and just this week a former adult-film star held a news conference in Manhattan to recount some of the lewd messages she said Mr. Weiner sent her.

Some who know Mr. Weiner believe he will ultimately find a job as a commentator on cable television, where he excelled for years as one of the Democratic Party's most prominent public voices.

"The public is very forgiving. He needs a little bit of space before he does something. He needs to go into therapy. He needs to show remorse," said George Arzt, a former press secretary to New York Mayor Ed Koch. "People love comeback stories."

Another job possibility could be rooted in his personal connection to the Clintons. Mr. Weiner could end up contributing to Mr. Clinton's aid work, some said.

Unlike Mr. Spitzer, Mr. Weiner doesn't have a wealthy family on which to fall back. According to financial-disclosure statements filed recently, he has what appears to be a modest investment portfolio.

The most significant asset—more than $100,000 at NIH Credit Union—is owned by his wife.

I bet shovel ready is real funny to him right. Wife got the money and Job. LOL ROFLMOA

But it is working:

64% of respondents say Obama is either "not really" or "only somewhat" responsible for the state of the economy.

As phony and unqualified as I think Obama is, I don't blame him for the recession either. The recession was caused by a lot of Americans, from banks to borrowers.
Dems and repubs both were greedy and unrealistic,

Obama, however came in to office talking grandiose shit about fixing things, ie passing the stimulus that was supposed to cap unemployment at 8%.

Interest rates are low as possible, Wall Street has rebounded and corporations are holding money. But businesses are NOT hiring. Is there a reason why there is a lack of expansion and investment in our economy?

Yes. Business owners do not like the uncertainty that OBuma brings with his healthcare program and desire to raise taxes.

Markets are unrational, yes, but I think they will respond very positively when this incompetent quack is no longer president.

That’s not what I hear and read. Businesses are holding back not because of Obama but because people are not spending money and don't have plans to increase their spending. The individual savings rate jumped and consumers are paying down debt (foreclosing on homes), which doesn't help a consumer based economy. There is over a trillion in cash that industry is just sitting on because they don't know when and on what people are going to start spending again. Obamacare maybe to blame, but no one know how much or if it is pure spin.

Businesses aren't hiring because they are making money without hiring.

They don't want to assume the liabilty of hiring wobbleheads like you who will have panic attacks on the job and fuck things up.

Those trips to the ER for sedation and comfort aren't cheap, ya know.

That 8% quote is getting very old. Obviously it was a mistake to make such a statement. No one can predict with any degree of reliability a cause and effect between govt spending and employment rates. However that doesnt mean theire isnt a cause and effect. To think the stimulus money failed to decrease unemployment is some faith based belief up there with global warming not being real (and impactedby human activity) and Obama not being born here,

Obama believed that spending nearly $1 Trillion US tazpayer dollars would revive the economy.

His "shovel-ready jobs" program has proven a joke, much of the stimulus money instead went to support state and federal jobs that were in drastic need of reform or restructure.

Obama's agenda is "business-as-usual" for people who work for or depend on the government tit. He has ZERO interest in challenging the corrupt, bloated and ineffecient structure that is government.

Tell me when the real Summer of Recovery begins....

Oh, I get it now.....

It wasn't officially "Summer" until after the Equinox!

Now that it is officially Summer, we can look for the "Summer of Recovery" to "kick in full speed"...

We believe in you Barry Obama!

Much of the transportation stimulus is spent on outside contractors and suppliers. Beltway HOT lanes - Fluor. Silver Line - Bechtel.

The problem with the shovel-ready projects is that they're spread out over many years. The 900 million dollars the Federal government provided for the Silver Line Metro extension is going to be dispersed over a period of at least 8 years.

Listening to these Obama idiots talk, it seems like the shovel ready jobs were ready immediately and there for the taking.

Do you think Obuma has ever even overseen a minor improvement job on his house?

The recession was caused by too much stimulus being left in during the last expansion. The temporary tax cuts were never allowed to expire. The DOD budget including the wars grew from 320 to 860 billion dollars. Long-term interest rates were capped at around 5 percent. When the mortgage securities buying evaporated after the 2005 peak, the government started expanding its backing of mortgage market. There was too much market interference by the Bush administration and the Fed.
