So, your theory is that the man was injured with a chainsaw, then his wife and stepdaughter (perhaps with others) inflicted the injuries she sustained before calling police?
That's pretty convoluted and violates
lex parsimoniae: the simplest solution is often the correct one.
Here's the sequence of events as I understand it:
1) The man's stepdaughter comes to the house. When she tries to open the door, it's obstructed by something.
2) She forces the door open and discovers her 70-year-old stepfather beating her 76-year-old mother with the blunt side of a small axe or hatchet in the foyer of the house.
3) She rescues her mother and takes her outside. The man follows and she struggles with him, taking the weapon away.
4) Someone calls 911 and the man goes back into the house.
5) Every cop within radio distance shows up and they start setting up a perimeter in anticipation of a standoff.
6) While the cops are setting up the perimeter, one of them looks in the garage and sees the man lying on the floor with severe injuries.
7) The cops rush in and start lifesaving measures on the man.
8) The man is taken to the hospital, where he dies of his injuries.
A quick check shows the most serious crime the suspect was charged with in the past decade or so was an HOV violation, which is pretty fucking far from beating your wife with an axe.
Most likely he was suffering from dementia, which can manifest itself in shocking outbursts of aggression and violence.
