What is the concern with having a store that sells guns near a school? I would rather have that than a poorly self medication mentally ill person, or a pedophile, or a rapist, or an alcoholic, or a drug dealer, or a passive aggressive person, convenience store, or a jewelry store, or you name it.

Now, the evidence is coming out that the Oregon shooter was asking for his victims to identify their religion, and only killed the Christians.

So, we need some "sensible" laws: we need to outlaw anybody who is non-Christian.

But think about a few things.

1. The school is a "Gun Free Zone". This did not stop the shooter from coming on campus and killing and injuring staff and students. Gun Free Zone just means someone can get charged with greater punishment if caught. Well the shooter is dead so I do not think he is worried about additional punishment.

2. Since school is a "Gun Free Zone", even the ONE campus security officer is NOT ARMED. Come on you LIBERAL higher education idiots, even the Youth Resource Officers in the FCPS are armed!!!! Yes, for those who are worried about a gun store next to a school, almost every FCPS Middle and High School have guns in them every day!!

3. If the school was not a "Gun Free Zone" maybe a student or administrator might have been carrying and been able to reduce the number of wounded or dead.

4. For all the people that think Fairfax, FCPS, McLean is Xanadu and there are no threats or concerns. Get your head out of your ass. The WORLD is a dangerous place these days. You cannot walk out of your house without expecting to be robbed, abducted, assaulted, stabbed or shot. Yes, this can happen anywhere when you least expect it. I mean between radical nut jobs, mentally ill people you never know when you will be a victim. Just look at the whack job, Charles Severance from Alexandria that shot and killed 3 people, some of them when they opened their front door to their own home.

5. Before long most of Tysons Corner will not be safe to travel in after dark.

6. $20, get your VA Concealed Carry Permit. Just because you have a CC permit does not mean you need to carry, but it gives you the option if you feel you need to.

I can tell you that most, if not ALL of the SRO's in FCPS school are armed. I would bet they are ALL armed as they are normal FCPD officers that are stationed at the schools.

Additionally the majority of their squad cars also have 12 gauge shotguns.

I assume the officers are also equipped with Pepper Spray and Tasers as well.

It is quite interesting if anyone ever really understood what goes on within a few blocks of Franklin Sherman on a daily basis.

I am in the area often and it is interesting to see how many "armed" people frequent this general area and have done so for many years.

I see armed people all the time in the restaurants, banks, 7/11, gas stations, repair shops, retail and other stores. Many of these locations are directly adjacent to, across Chain Bridge Road or within a few blocks of the school.

The armed people that I have seen consist of at least the following:

Fairfax County Police uniformed and undercover officers
VA State Police - Often dine in and around many McLean area restaurants
Fairfax County Fire Marshall's - Yes they are ARMED
US Postal Service Inspectors - Yes they are ARMED
US Park Police
Federal Protective Services
FBI Agents
US Marshalls
Secret Service - On duty protecting McLean residents and off duty or while on break
Armored Car Service - with armed drivers and money handlers picking up an dropping off money at area banks and stores, even right next to the school!
Private Security "Rent A Cops" both on the job and frequenting businesses

What about the gas stations, 7/11, and Cigar store, Pharmacy and restaurants that all withing 1000 feet of the school that sell at a minimum: Rolling papers, cigarettes, cigars, E-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, beer, wine, over the counter or prescription drugs. These items are sold on a daily basis right adjacent or withing 1000 feet of this school. There are also at a minimum 2 banks within 1000 feet of the school and I believe it is now gone, but a Physic/Palm Reader/Tarot Card establishment used to be directly behind the school. What was that all about and what REALLY went on in that place?

I am beginning to think that Franklin Sherman Elementary School's location is the REAL problem. It is located in the WRONG place, bordered on 2 sides by Commercial Properties. I am sure there are other FCPS locations that border Commercial Properties, however, the MAJORITY of schools that I am aware of in FFX and other Counties tend to be bordered by Residential areas and Parkland.

So the government wants to punish the business owners due to the location of the school?

Something does not seem right with all of this. Open your eyes and understand the real threats in the immediate area.

From the comments I'm seeing on the articles it looks like a lot of
McLean residents are foreigners and Yankee carpetbaggers who need to
wise up and get it through their thick skulls they live in VIRGINIA
and not somewhere else. The South Shall Rise Again!

The W.T. Woodson co-ed rifle team is a Virginia High School League (VHSL) recognized winter club sport activity with varsity privileges, which means it is recognized by VHSL (we follow the rules and are eligible for letters). The rifle team is part of the Potomac High School Rifle League (PHSRL). The PHSRL is comprised of schools with rifle teams in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The PHSRL conducts matches in precision air rifle. Boys and girls shoot shoulder to shoulder in competition. The season runs from November to the end of February.

It is the mission of the W.T. Woodson Rifle Team to support student athletes in the sport of shooting, thereby promoting the spirit of competition, camaraderie, safety, enjoyment, responsibility and dedication among athletes.

I began volunteering 31 years ago. I don’t get paid. I get a kick out of the sport, and I flat-out love these kids. Good kids are good kids. Technology — video games, cellphones, handshakes — that all changes, but these kids are still the reason I do it. I get to see them grow up, become big, grown-up people, physically and intellectually. They’re like big puppies when they start, with big paws, just trying to stay on their feet and stay straight.

The biggest surprise for laypeople is that we’re not in the gun business. A target rifle is just a device you use to get a score to win an athletic letter to be offered a scholarship. It’s the same as a tennis racket, hockey stick, a pompom. So all that mystique about firearms goes away. They just want the thing to work mechanically to put a hole where they’re aiming — safely.

Believe it or not, this is a thinking activity. It takes a long time to be good at it. We don’t have a [Tim] Tebow who just comes out and does it by natural athleticism. It’s persistence, it’s patience, it’s listening. Females are really good at this because they’re listeners, and they follow instructions. Several of our girls went on to win national championships in college. Teenage boys, with all their testosterone, they got to be themselves and say, “That won’t work with me.” Sometimes I just have to say, “Well, it may not work with you, but it works for a whole lot of Olympic champions.”

Lanny Bassham, an Olympic Gold Medalist shooter in the ’70s, really got this. He had a friend on the gymnastics team, and when they watched the American gymnasts practice all they heard was, “No, no, no, you did it wrong again!” Then they went over to the Bulgarian team, where Béla Károlyi was the coach. When the girls would fall off the bar, he wouldn’t say a word, just motion to get back on it. When she got it, he’d jump up and yell, “Good! Good! Good!” That’s the name of the game. Teenagers are particularly sensitive to criticism. There’s no profit from that — for the kid or for the team. These are just super lessons for life. Put a failure behind you. Learn from it and forget it.

The relationships keep going. I have a boy — he’s an Army major now, been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan several times. He e-mails me about once or twice a month for sort of like fatherly advice. He’ll ask me about some dumb commander or a problem, and while he’s not asking for advice, there’s a solid invitation there. I tell him: “What goes out through your lips can’t come back — you can’t take it back — just like a bullet out of a gun.” Twenty years on, and he’s still coming to me for encouragement, for advice. That’s payment enough.

Reflections on the Dumbing Down of America: High School in 1957, and High School in 2013

SCENARIO 1
Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck’s gun rack.

1957 – Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack’s shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2013 – School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.


SCENARIO 2
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1957 – Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.

2013 – Police called and SWAT team arrives — they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

SCENARIO 3
Jeffrey will not sit still in class, he disrupts other students.

1957 – Jeffrey sent to the Principal’s office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2013 – Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government because Jeffrey has a disability.


SCENARIO 4
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor’s car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.

1957 – Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.

2013 – Billy’s dad is arrested for child abuse, Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy’s sister that she remembers being abused (spanked) herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy’s mom has an affair with the psychologist.


SCENARIO 5
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 – Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.

2013 – The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.


SCENARIO 6
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.

1957 – Ants die.

2013 – ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents – and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny’s dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.


SCENARIO 7
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957 – In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.

2013 – Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

High School Cross Country races are held a Bull Run Park. Students, teachers, coaches, officials, parents and siblings are all in attendance while multiple gun shots can be heard from the Bull Run Shooting Range directly next to the race course.

Races are started with the firing of a starter pistol. We all assume the gun the starter is holding is in fact a starter pistol that is shooting blanks?? Also note that the starter pistols do not have the red paint marking on the end of the barrel. If for some reason there is need to restart the race, the "starter" fires off multiple rounds to alter the racers that there is a problem and to stop running. Who's to know that the multiple shots are from the starters pistol/blanks and not some whacko kid that is pissed at the world!!!

When Cross Country and Track Races/Meets are held on FCPS property, they also use a "starter" pistol and fire them to start the races. Who, gunshots on FCPS property!!! What really constitutes a "Gun Free School Zone"???

Wow, what are these McLean moms and everyone missing out on? A fun afternoon running in the woods among gunshots and the race is started by a guy holding and firing a gun!!! Additionally, at least the Cross County and Track Athletes learn what a gunshot sounds like. This is actually a very important thing/skill to learn about for survival in the real world.

and Fairfax is so special how? apparently you're unaware how easy it is to walk a short path through the woods from Blue Ridge over to the rec center and high school, and even sneak around to the back of the school if you were up to no good. if the proximity of gun shops was a real danger to schools then people would be freaking out about it all over the place and there would be a zoning law. this is nothing but self-imposed paranoia by some elitist liberals in McLean.

All middle and high schools in Fairfax County has Fairfax County police officers assigned to the school. These are regular police officers working in the schools. There is nothing special about them. They are NOT the FCPS police or school security. All the officers in the schools carry the standard semi auto hand gun that all the other police officers in the county carry. Almost all the cops in the schools carry tasers as well.

OK, now to really get the antis blood flowing. All the police cars have shot guns in them, yes the ones parked in the school parking lots. Several also have AR15s. Yes, those evil black super scary assault rifles that could wipe out an entire school in 5 minutes because they shoot a million bullets a minute.

This is just the standard issue stuff. Some of the officers carry a backup gun. So some of the officers has TWO hand guns in the schools. Plus most of them also chose to carry a knife of some type. These are not your little 2 inch blade type girl scout knives but tactical type boot, folding, or fighting style knives.
