First, that explanation by FCPS is incorrect. The reason they no longer are having the crossing guards direct traffic is because that's not part of their job description and it never was. They only started doing it in order to keep traffic moving b/c they saw a need for it. Now they are returning to their one and only intended purpose which, as the poster FCPS stated "They made the priority getting the kids to school."
I never have seen the crossing guard at my school let kids go one at a time. I've always seen them wait until there's a few kids on the corner or when there's a good break in the traffic to stop everyone briefly while they cross. They were pretty good about making sure traffic kept moving. If traffic's not moving, the buses aren't going to be able to get in and out of the school without blocking up the works. Anyone who's not already on a main road near a school is going to have a hell of a time getting out. Side streets will not longer be given their turn as the traffic on the main roads in front of these schools will never be halted as it was in the past to let other cars out.
It remains to be seen what will happen but the general thought right now is that this will be a disaster.
