Be prepared for crazy traffic Tuesday!

And not just because the buses will be back on the road but because Fairfax County crossing guards are no longer allowed to direct traffic. They will only be allowed to stop traffic for pedestrians and that is it.

So, if you have to drive by any FCPS school in the morning on your way to work and you relied on a crossing guard/traffic cop in the past to keep traffic flowing, you're doomed.

I drive by Cherry Run every afternoon and if I'm passing by around 3:40 when they let out the kids it's a giant cluster. The crossing guard there was always cool about directing traffic so that those of us NOT going into the school wouldn't have to wait in the car pickup line that overflowed into the street but now she's not allowed to do that anymore.

I've avoided driving by Lake Braddock in the past b/c traffic there is always a nightmare in the morning when I drive by. Do they have a crossing guard there? Wonder if it will make that traffic worse if there's no one to help the cars trying to turn left into the parking lot.

Some schools have side street traffic that will not be able to get out onto the main road if there's no one stopping the traffic on the main road to let those people out at the beginning and end of the school day.

Be prepared!

"Fairfax County crossing guards are no longer allowed to direct traffic."

Why not?

Because the crossing guards were not directing traffic properly. They made the priority getting the kids to school, instead of keeping the traffic moving. There's nothing wrong with letting the kids pile up on the corner for a few minutes while you're letting traffic flow and then stopping traffic to let the kids cross.

But, instead...if they had one kid who wanted to cross, they'd stop traffic immediately.

That's because they like to pretend they are COPs. Thus they act like ignorant fools.

They are going to have to delay the middle school runs if crossing guards can't direct traffic. My first middle school (second run) stop is 7:15 am.

If I have to wait until traffic dies down to get out of the high school lot, it will be at least 7:20 am before I can even start heading towards the first middle school stop. I'll be there about 7:30. This will also delay the third bell (elementary run).

But hell I don't care, it will end up being more hours (at $28 per) for me!

Call me crazy, but couldn't they just have sent a directive to the crossing guards to aggregate kids before letting them cross? This sounds like it's going to be a free for all.

First, that explanation by FCPS is incorrect. The reason they no longer are having the crossing guards direct traffic is because that's not part of their job description and it never was. They only started doing it in order to keep traffic moving b/c they saw a need for it. Now they are returning to their one and only intended purpose which, as the poster FCPS stated "They made the priority getting the kids to school."

I never have seen the crossing guard at my school let kids go one at a time. I've always seen them wait until there's a few kids on the corner or when there's a good break in the traffic to stop everyone briefly while they cross. They were pretty good about making sure traffic kept moving. If traffic's not moving, the buses aren't going to be able to get in and out of the school without blocking up the works. Anyone who's not already on a main road near a school is going to have a hell of a time getting out. Side streets will not longer be given their turn as the traffic on the main roads in front of these schools will never be halted as it was in the past to let other cars out.

It remains to be seen what will happen but the general thought right now is that this will be a disaster.

The crossing guard at Lake Braddock stops traffic if there's one fucking kids or one car trying to leave the school. Traffic there backs up like crazy.

Well, that probably won't change then. LOL! Because that's still what they're supposed to do.

The crossing guard in front of Dogwood Elementary School a few years ago was a real asshole. He once took me to task for ignoring him as I was out for a jog. There were no children around but as I was about to cross, he told me to hold on, but I crossed anyway, because I am not a school child. He said something that included the words "my intersection" in his little rant. I said sorry, then laughed at him and moved on.

This same asshole left his post for several minutes to chase after a bus driver who apparently disregarded his command. You see, Dumbass's priority is respect for himself, and not safety for the children.

I saw this jerk last year near Fox Mill Elementary School. He wears white gloves and looks like a pathetic piece of shit.

Union Mill ES has increased enrollment this year and a couple new bus stops. I suggest those who travel thru Clifton take 28 or leave after 8:30AM.

Good luck on your shitty commute.

Robinson a zoo this morning. A mile long backup to get onto campus from Roberts. Crossing guard was actually waling with the kids holding a lame stop sign.

The guard there has been there for at least ten years and is the only person who can keep traffic moving.

Oh, and the two motor cops sitting on the asses did absolutely nothing to help...

Oh good. I had to drive an alternate route to work to avoid the backup at my school caused by this crossing guard change and I ALMOST went up Roberts. At the last minute I realized that that would put me driving past Robinson at 7am and having to deal with all that traffic so I went a different way instead. Guess I made the right decision.

We also had two police officers at the intersections near my school who were doing nothing but standing there. I'm guessing this is the "monitoring" the county said would take place. Am hoping they realize that they need someone DIRECTING TRAFFIC.

So stop cutting through our community and you will not be 'assaulted' by the guard trying to get our children to school safely. If you stay on the main road you bypass all school areas.

Um...you do realize that people who live in these communities have to get out of them to go to work in the morning, right? This would necessitate driving by the community schools...

On a related note, the first couple of days without the guard near my school at first weren't too bad. But now, people trying to get into the traffic from the side street are realizing they don't have a chance in hell of getting out and are making kamikaze runs playing chicken with the buses. It's getting interesting. I am thinking there will be some sort of fender bender within the next week or two that will halt all traffic and buses trying to get into the school. That will be entertaining.
