January 13, 1982 -- A day that I will never forget.

That was the day that God gave the middle finger to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It was the day Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the 14 St. Bridge and an accident occurred on Metro. I had just crossed the 14 St. Bridge about 30 minutes earlier when the plane hit the bridge. The commute from D.C. to Springfield, if I recall correctly, took nearly 8 hours. I thought the world was coming to an end that day.

I believe that quote was actually attributed to Howard Stern, who was a local DJ at the time.

Howard Stern faked a call to the Air Florida ticket counter at National the next day. A cowardly punk from New York would never do that for real. It's much easier to mock minor celebrities and washed up child actors. I was glad he was shitcanned, though it wasn't over Air Florida.
Why bring this up now, anyway? It's not January, it's not the 13th, and it's not snowing. It was also 32 years ago.

Correct. And it was one of the reasons attributed to his firing. Not sure if that was all of the story however, but it did pave the way for the Greaseman to come in and take over the DC radio market.

Why bring it up 32 yrs later...
History repeats itself. It was also the date of the first Metro accident involving fatalities.. Now that the silver line is opening, we get to see how well they fixed those switches.

Remember Skutnik(?)....he was the guy who, after the crash, went into the freezing Potomac and rescued that lady. He was invited to and honored by President Reagan at the State of the Union speech shortly thereafter (which soon became common for Presidents to do). Skutnik's son was a pitcher for Hayfield's baseball team, and a good one, as I recall.

We trudged over from Columbia Island Marina pulling an aluminum boat through the snow. We got there just as Lenny Skutnik dove into the water. A very brave thing to do and he saved that flight attendant's life.
My only gripe with Lenny is allowing himself to be used as a prop by a fucking slimeball politician. I would say the same thing if the slimeball politician was Clinton or any of the rest of them.

Lenny was a HERO, in every sense of the word.
Who was the politician ?
Still have concerns about OP, hope they are OK.

Was working at USPS HQ La Enfant plaza. Came out at 4pm people where coming back into the build. Bad wreck on Metro, Found out later 1st fatal wreck 3 dead.. Went out of building to 14th St. Traffic jam. Horrid,Sirens all over. decided to walk to Pentagon bus stop. Started across 14st bridge the one the plane hit all kinds of people there, thought a bus had slipped on ice and overturned into the river, Ambulances galore sirens. TV film crews. Saw the Park Police Eagle 1 copter in the sky about this time Lenny S. was doing his thing, there was also a black guy that tried to help with a extension cord to reach the victims. He has been mostly forgoton. Made it almost across the 14st bridge. Stopped by police about 100 feet from where the plane hit as they gained control of the situation. Thank God or I would have seen the carnage in the cars where 5 people died on the bridge. Had to walk back across the bridge and start to walk over the other one, made it to the middle, But the cops would not let us walkers pass. Something about the downed plane blowing up middle of the river. Finally we got on a flatbead truck hanging on all over it about 30 of us and made it across. we could ride but not walk! Saw Airforce helos landing on the Va side, saw a part of the tail of the plane sticking up in the ice. Police all over the place in the dim light of darkness coming. made it to the Pentagon. Got on a bus. horrid traffic and the driver squeezed the bus through a opening into the HOV lanes thru a gap in the wall by mere inches, we all cheered the "Worlds Greatest Bus Driver" and home at last I and the others went. It all was like yesterday..

There was a radio jingle at the time.... Take the train to the plane. Someone redid it as... Take the plane to the bridge. Seemed funny at the time, but I was much younger.

i was listening to the radio when greeseman made that comment
he was plainly unserious not being irreverant and quick: it was only a quick plug
AN UNDENIABLE FACT is it was common before then, at the time, and likely still now to tell irreverant jokes under the breath, quickly after any event that can cause a joke listener to be off guard, any kind and often tragic ones.
people joke
--------------------
fact is man (was it NY or stern?) had been tried to get him fired many times before
fact is: grease man was excellent listeners loved him
his listeners were partiers but often hard working. the area was not so much full of trash doing nothing and gov at 3x pay then, as it is now : obama-ized
--------------------
it's probably the same sacks of shit that played offended by grease man who didn't listen to him and had gov cush jobs and are now getting 3x pay that wanted to help NY get his jockey position , is my intuition

Reagan was not a slimeball politician.......c'mon, man, he was beloved by most Americans and either way, he was not a "slimeball".
You're an idiot, and an obvious Democrat, trying to use Clinton as a cover.

Wow, it never occurred to me they meant Reagan, I thought they were referring to a local...for example "mayor for life" I'm with you, regardless of your politics, Reagan was highly respected.

That's still a good idea! Who wants in the death pool for the list of niggers to be offed?
Sadly, (or gratefully?) all I remember from this is the intro to Rescue 911. The incident did remind me of the terrorist attacks on the pentagon on september 11, 2001. During 9/11 i thought a plane had an accident because it did remind me of the 14th st plane crash. Why would any flight path be over a city? come to think of it, i came back from boston and flew into to DCA, are all the approaches from the south now?

Or even know a Metro train derailed inside a tunnel on the Red Line.
IIRC, 7 people were killed.

They day after that crash, I managed to get out onto the partially frozen Potomac and found two wallets and a purse. People carried more cash than credit cards back then, so it was an easy score of $128. A lot of money back in the day.
