That was the day that God gave the middle finger to the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It was the day Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the 14 St. Bridge and an accident occurred on Metro. I had just crossed the 14 St. Bridge about 30 minutes earlier when the plane hit the bridge. The commute from D.C. to Springfield, if I recall correctly, took nearly 8 hours. I thought the world was coming to an end that day.

I'm sure there are lots of residents who remember that day...I sure do. Only to be eclipsed in local tragic stories by 9/11.

Howard Stern faked a call to the Air Florida ticket counter at National the next day. A cowardly punk from New York would never do that for real. It's much easier to mock minor celebrities and washed up child actors. I was glad he was shitcanned, though it wasn't over Air Florida.

History repeats itself. It was also the date of the first Metro accident involving fatalities.. Now that the silver line is opening, we get to see how well they fixed those switches.

Remember Skutnik(?)....he was the guy who, after the crash, went into the freezing Potomac and rescued that lady. He was invited to and honored by President Reagan at the State of the Union speech shortly thereafter (which soon became common for Presidents to do). Skutnik's son was a pitcher for Hayfield's baseball team, and a good one, as I recall.

Why confute Greaseman with Stern?
Anyway, I remember that day and crossed past that bridge only about 30 minutes before.
The conditions just deteriorated very quickly.
Near Chantilly that same evening, I vividly remember a car to my right going BACKWARD at the same speed as me.

Was working at USPS HQ La Enfant plaza. Came out at 4pm people where coming back into the build. Bad wreck on Metro, Found out later 1st fatal wreck 3 dead.. Went out of building to 14th St. Traffic jam. Horrid,Sirens all over. decided to walk to Pentagon bus stop. Started across 14st bridge the one the plane hit all kinds of people there, thought a bus had slipped on ice and overturned into the river, Ambulances galore sirens. TV film crews. Saw the Park Police Eagle 1 copter in the sky about this time Lenny S. was doing his thing, there was also a black guy that tried to help with a extension cord to reach the victims.He has been mostly forgoton. Made it almost across the 14st bridge. Stopped by police about 100 feet from where the plane hit as they gained control of the situation. Thank God or I would have seen the carnage in the cars where 5 people died on the bridge. Had to walk back across the bridge and start to walk over the other one, made it to the middle, But the cops would not let us walkers pass. Something about the downed plane blowing up middle of the river. Finally we got on a flatbead truck hanging on all over it about 30 of us and made it across. we could ride but not walk! Saw Airforce helos landing on the Va side, saw a part of the tail of the plane sticking up in the ice. Police all over the place in the dim light of darkness coming. made it to the Pentagon. Got on a bus. horrid traffic and the driver squeezed the bus through a opening into the HOV lanes thru a gap in the wall by mere inches, we all cheered the "Worlds Greatest Bus Driver" and home at last I and the others went. It all was like yesterday..

There was a radio jingle at the time.... Take the train to the plane. Someone redid it as... Take the plane to the bridge. Seemed funny at the time, but I was much younger.

Sadly, (or gratefully?) all I remember from this is the intro to Rescue 911. The incident did remind me of the terrorist attacks on the pentagon on september 11, 2001. During 9/11 i thought a plane had an accident because it did remind me of the 14th st plane crash. Why would any flight path be over a city? come to think of it, i came back from boston and flew into to DCA, are all the approaches from the south now?

They day after that crash, I managed to get out onto the partially frozen Potomac and found two wallets and a purse. People carried more cash than credit cards back then, so it was an easy score of $128. A lot of money back in the day.
