You need to dig a piece from the edge of the grove where it is still expanding. You don't need any canes just a big piece of nice new rhizome. The rhizome will have the most energy stored in the fall after it's had all summer to fill up, so dig it up then, or early in the spring before shooting happens. Like in march. Make sure the rhizome is kept moist and not buried too deep, just 4-5 inches is enough. I wouldn't plant yellow groove since it is crazy how fast it spreads and only reaches like 2.5 inches at maturity. If you plant Moso it spreads slower and gets bigger more attractive canes. Like 12" diameter and 130' high in China. I had to order mine on eBay since nobody around here grows it, everybody just grows yellow groove or golden bamboo since they make an excellent and fast screen but look ratty IMO.
