Ok brain surgeon, you got me on the alphabetical thing. My point is, I didnt recognize any of the folks on the "Talkers" list other than Adam Carolla. That list is as subjective/important/relevant as Fairfax Underground doing a list of the Top 50 Hottest Woman of All Time. Ooops, Don and Mike used to do that. Mike by himself can't be so creative to come up with something like that. Nope, let's do brilliant things like the Power of 5 or the Ahhhh Game and then get cancelled from main stream radio. Adam Carolla isn't making a profit from his podcast. He is a nationally known name. He tried selling advertising on his podcast, and it failed. He is now trying to drive traffic to live shows using his podcast as a promotional vehicle. He started out doing a couple of shows a month. Apparently it isn't enough, because now he is booking comedy clubs a week at a time to generate income.

The fact is, if Adam Carolla, who has hundreds of thousands of listeners and does the podcast correctly by having smaller file sizes, no crew (besides "The Wease") and only commits one day a week to tapings, can't make money selling advertising, WTF is Mike thinking?

Here's another splash of cold reality for those idiots who think MOM is making money doing podcasting...

He (Carolla) is attempting what many Internet entertainers haven’t yet figured out how to do: make money.

Although he doesn’t get paid to do the podcast, he does make money when listeners go to live shows. If people buy a fan T-shirt or a hat, “then we get paid a little bit more,” he said.

Carolla gets a share of the ticket profits depending on how many people attend, and most of the shows sell out. He also offers podcasts of the live shows that can be downloaded for $2.99.

Worker salaries aren’t a money drain. Many of his employees are unpaid volunteers or interns, who can earn college credit for their services.

Also, Carolla has a deal with CBS which gives him bandwidth in exchange for any profits he makes from the podcast. So far, that's pretty much zilch.

You are right that Stern is probably the only guy who could pull this off. About a year ago, Carolla said that if you ever heard that he was back to doing comedy clubs, things must be pretty bad. I take him at his word. He was getting $1.8 million from CBS. I imagine he is probably netting a fraction of that now with the live gigs...and working a lot harder, too.

Mike, on the other hand, continues to live in denial. It's done, Mikey. Middays in Roanoke awaits.

Carolla is also setting up the Ace network and is planning to set up a web site that will be a one stop shop for many different podcasts to appeal to all types of demographics. When this succeeds he will be able to attract different nation wide advertisers who aren't looking for small niche demographics. With shows about comedy, family, cars and other interests. Advertisers will feel more comfortable shelling out $ and getting a return on their investment. Adam has the advantage of being respected and listened to by so called Hollywood types. His guests are top notch and varied and he seems to have a great report with most and usually does his research. He also attracts a broader audience with the inclusion of Theresa and Bald Brian. Mike made it in radio with his voice, impressions and a lot of help from a dynamic individual in Don who had good business sense. Adam does not have the voice but is quick witted and a very hard worker who has succeeded in many avenues of ordinary life and entertainment. Mike seems to think he is owed a nice income and support for his past success while Adam is constantly hustling to attract new and different types of listeners. How hard is it to set up a Skype account and let it be known to your audience when to be on and what the general topic will be. Mike should call Adams people and beg for a shot of being a low level podcast on the Ace Network or at least take a lesson from his play book. As soon as Mike realizes that his listeners and the rest of the world don't owe him anything, maybe then things will start to turn around for the podcast. Who knows maybe I am just drunk again.

I received a heads up on MOMs podcast that he was bragging about being in the top 20 on tunes. He's currently 29th. He allegedly then went to begging Sacramenten's to download and spread the word. I guess he's changed his tude a bit when it comes to running down part of his audience he use to disdain with such disgust. I think it's funny, now he'd cut his right nut off to have his old syndicate in Sac Town back. When Don was around he couldn't dis that market enough. Mike would scream and yell at callers like a Bitch and he wasn't kidding. I wonder how many calls have been made to KHTK begging them to run his show lately?

I'm a fan of the podcast, definitely, but I also have no interest in defending it. I mean, I hate "Nickelback" more and more every time I hear them, so I just choose not to listen to them on purpose. As for driving traffic to your site, that's fine by me. You don't have a fixed cost business model. That means the more we drive traffic to your site, the more downloads we help generate, the deeper into the red you go. If Carla was a real CFO, she could actually calculate the exact moment when your download costs will exceed your ability to meet demand, resulting in the end of your podcast. But she's not, so she won't.

I have no doubt you are generating a "modest income." The problem is, the level of income is going back into your operating costs. You are not PROFITABLE. You are not paying people enough to live on. If you read my post about this, I am saying that your bandwidth costs will continue to rise with your listenership. You have no economies of scale to work with. It will never be cost effective for you to run this show.

You need to consider the advice here and find something, anything in radio that will help pay the bills. Big contracts from Infinity are a thing of the past.

That's fine and all, and I like the creativity with the Pancho Villa look to complement the Storm Troop uniform. It makes for an interesting political commentary. Where I draw the line though is at you blaster selection. For accuracy and consistency's sake, you should have stayed original and gone with the stormtrooper-issue BlasTech Industries E-11 blaster rifle instead of Han Solo's modified BlasTech DL-44 blaster pistol.

Now that the 2-year anniversary of this thread has come and gone, I am officially announcing my retirement from this thread.

As we have seen over the past two years, most of the predictions made here have come true. I have no doubt that sometime in the coming months, the plug will be pulled on Mike's podcast (most likely by his creditors). The fact is the guy doesn't listen to advice. If he didn't heed the advice of Don Geronimo when striking out on his own, he sure the heck isn't going to listen to us now.

Good luck to Rob(b) and Buzz on finding new jobs when it finally dawns on them that this is a one-way ticket to nowhere. I won't wish Oscar good luck because he has a good job and I think he is smart enough to figure things out sooner rather than later. I won't wish Mike luck because he's made his own luck and it's been mostly bad with the exception of his years with Don.

It does sound odd, but it is a faulty analogy. You are comparing Mike O'Meara's show to a whole genre of porn. It would make more sense if you compared Mike's show's genre, which is comedy talk radio, to gay porn.
