Thanks for solving the mystery. I'm going to have to check it out again and see what remains. I expect it will be difficult to imagine sand and swimming and everything I remember.

Does anyone remember swimming in a place called Timber Lake? It was some sort of swimming and recreation area, perhaps a manmade lake. It had roped off swimming areas and maybe even diving boards. I was last there in about 1986. I don't even remember what town it was in. I thought maybe Sterling, but some searching on the Internet seems to suggest it was Vienna.

Nice work, Net Detective. I now see the Flickr page where the photo originated. Case closed.

What a horrible accident. If I'm not mistaken, the giant oak tree that fell once sat in the front yard of the Oliver farm house on Georgetown Pike. The neighborhood across the street from the Safeway was once known as Oliver Estates because it sits on what used to be Oliver property. It was sub-divided into neighborhood lots in the mid 1960s. Here is an old picture (circa early 80s) of what was o

I remember there being a Sam Goody in Fair Oaks Mall. Not sure about Variety Records. I was thinking this might be a Wheaton location or somewhere else I never went.

Does anyone remember which Variety Records location this is? I took this picture from a thread in the Off Topic section. I used to go to the Tyson's Corner location, but I don't remember a wooden facade or a side entrance. Is this some other mall? The picture is circa 1983 based on the Flashdance reference.

Great picture of Variety Records! Is that really the Tyson's Corner location? I do not remember the wooden facade and the side entrance.

Here is the picture. It's not the intersection of 123 and 29, as I initially stated, but I'm guessing it's close by:

Thank you for all the responses! They clear things up quite a bit. The picture I am referring to does not belong to me and it's in a private album. I'm waiting for permission to post it before I add it to this thread. Mike

Some fantastic pictures there. One of them prompted me to ask a question in another thread called "I-66 history." Mike

Hello, I'm new to this forum, but have been a lurker for ages. I've got a question about the history of I-66. I'm looking at a picture of the intersection of 29 and 123, near the 29 Diner. This picture looks like it's from the 60s, yet there is a sign for I-66. I didn't think I-66 opened until the early 80s. Am I correct about this and, if so, were there signs for I-66 up in the 60s, even though
