American Author, Playwright Gore Vidal Dead at 86

American author and playwright Gore Vidal, who unsuccessfully ran for political office twice, has died at the age of 86.
The announcement was made Tuesday night on his official website, but did not mention a cause of death. Vidal's nephew, Burr Steers, said he died of complications from pneumonia, according to The Associated Press.

Mr. Vidal had quick wit and a grand sense of humor. And served in WWII.

I remember two things in particular about Gore.
He wrote this crazy book I read when I was 13, called "Myra Brekenridge". He was responsible for my initial realization that things such as strap on dildos existed.
Then, some years later , while searching for a good movie to take a lovely young lady to, I saw an ad for "Caligula", and it claimed to be "based on a screenplay by Gore Vidal". I figured this gave the movie some credibility so I took this girl, who I was dating for the first time, to see it.
It was only after we realized the movie was pornographic and the chick ran out of the theater , that I discovered that Vidal wanted his name taken off the credits.
Penthouse productions took over the making of the movie and their screenplay resembled little of Vidals version. But some loophole allowed them to use Vidals name on the credits.
The girl thought I did it on purpose and never spoke to me again.

I read a couple of his books, including the one on the Roman Emperor Julian. They were ok but I never could figure out whey Vidal was considered so great by the "hip" set.

I watched the '68 Democratic and Republican conventions commentaries between him and William Buckley. After increasingly nastiness between them, they almost came to blows. They finally had to be placed in separate rooms and weren't allowed to speak to one another.
I loved his writing until he got old. By then I could see his formula. I followed his Washington dc series but I wish I had stopped before I read "Hollywood".
