Leaving Johnson City, we headed for Nashville in the wee hours of the morning. Driving over 4 hours over tons of hills , we finally made it to the Opryland Hotel. Worn out and exhausted, we all check in and try to get a full 1.5 hours of rest before beginning the rest of our day. At 8 AM, we met in the lobby of the hotel and headed towards the famous Studio B. We got a tour of Studio B, and got the chance to record a few songs there.
I got to play the famous 1942 Steinway Grand. It was the piano that Elvis used during a few of his sessions, not to mention Floyd Cramer, and many other musical legends. It sure was a surreal experience getting to record there. After that, we felt the need for some food, to Cracker Barrell was our next stop. Then we headed back to downtown Nashville to do a show at The Nashville Convention Center. The Center is pure glass room all around, and you can see much of Broadway in view. Looking at the Ryman Auditorium across the street and singing towards it was an amazing experience I’ll never forget. After we finished up, we packed up our stuff in the hot trailer, and drove back to our hotel to relax awhile. Then a shuttle bus takes us to the world famous Grand ‘Ol Opry. It was a full house. What a great line up it was. Little Jimmy Dickens, Pure Prairie League, Billy Dean, and Old Crowe Medicine Show were part of the program that night. Listening to all that great Country Music sure gave us a hankering for food. So we had a late supper at The Nashville Palace. A great live Western Swing band played, as we dined. The waitress was a doll.
Sunday, July 8th
We wanted so much to eat at the Pancake Pantry for breakfast, but a line a block long was already forming, and we couldn’t take it anymore. So we ate at a nice little hipster place across the street. I had a delicious Santa Fe Egg Wrap for my breakfast. The fedora wearing tattooed waiter, made me feel like we were back home in Richmond again. Although, Nashville is also known as a prime Hipster locale. We finished up our trip by seeing The Country Music Hall Of Fame, and The Ryman Auditorium. We all got our picture taken up on stage, and got to sing a little bit to try out the acoustics. We got applause! After that, it was time to say goodbye to Nashville and its environs, and make our way back home to Richmond. What a fun filled weekend we had!
