So, besides avoiding cars for sale in NJ what are the top 10 do's and don'ts of buying an out of state used car online? What are my options for getting it registered in VA? Or getting it back to VA if I don't want to pay a transportation fee?

Ito gets prize for useless post of the week.

Nothing wrong with buying a used car from out-of-state. Bought my current car used from Ohio 10 years ago. Son's car used from NY, other son's car used from PA. All three have been reliable.

Great. So, what are the procedures for getting the car back to VA, titled, registered and tagged if I don't want to pay for transportation and I don't own a trailer or tow-truck myself?

I would recommend you buy from a southern state where winters are mild. You ever heard the term "Florida car"?

My advice would be to buy the vehicle from someone who was willing to drive it down here and get the emissions inspection done himself. Yes he will almost certainly charge you more for the vehicle than if you picked it up offsite. This way you will have all of the paperwork needed in order to register the car in Virginia.

If you cannot swing this, or are too cheap to pay someone for doing you a huge favor, one alternative might be to get a "TRIP PERMIT" from the DMV and drive the vehicle here yourself. Information on this can be found on the VA DMV website at https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/dmvnet/trip_permit/intro.asp .

I buy cars from old people. They tend to not drive the shit out of them and have regular maintenance done. Most are garage kept as well.
On the other hand certain people tear theirs up and the interior is full of KFC boxes, ketchup and air freshners.

Depends. You buying from a dealer of private party? If dealer, they'll give you temporary tags. All mine came from a dealer, and I have always traveled to the car, and driven it back myself. That's probably cheaper than most alternatives. Dealer usually sends you the title, which along with bill of sale, etc. you just take to the DMV. You'll pay VA sales tax on the vehicle, and they'll do the work to get it VA titled, registered, and tagged.

Typo - it should say dealer OR private party.

Ha! Good luck with that.

You don't need emissions done in order tp get it registered in VA. IIRC, the DMV gave me permanent tags, but with stickers that expired in a month. Then, I had to get the emissions done, after which the DMV sent me the regular 1 or 2-year stickers to put on the tags.

I want to buy a car without a down payment. Now I am looking for a company that can sell such a car. I am going to buy a car on credit. I don't have any savings and I really need the car. My credit history seems to be good.

So many people need a car, but the problem is that when you buy a car that way, you might not be approved for a loan. I tried to buy a car without a down payment. I was rejected three times by different firms.

I bought a car that way, too, and my interest rate went up a bit for the loan. I got a used car with no down payment https://www.rollsauto.com/blog/how-to-buy-a-used-car-with-no-down-payment thanks to this website . I read what I had to do and what the credit interests were.
Then I went to the company and bought the car. Initial payment is included in the percentage by how much the rate went up. You will be strictly required to pay the same amount at the end of the month during the entire term of the loan.

I've purchased several vehicles from out of state and it's buyer beware. First, order the Carfax, but don't assume every accident will show up there because many times, they don't. Then you need to have a pre-purchase inspection performed at a reputable shop to see if the vehicle is accident free and in good mechanical condition. Ideally, you should also drive the car yourself before you buy it to make sure it's something you want.

There are many transport companies that can transport the car for you. Usually the buyer pays for transportation.

Don't trust the seller. People lie when it comes to money. If it's a dealer, trust them even less.
