The Army's $5 Billion, Eight Year Mistake

I hope the next uniform does away with the retarded velcro...

http://www.thedaily.com/page/2012/06/24/062412-news-camouflage-fiasco-1-5/

Over the next year, America’s largest fighting force is swapping its camouflage pattern. The move is a quiet admission that the last uniform — a pixelated design that debuted in 2004 at a cost of $5 billion — was a colossal mistake.

Soldiers have roundly criticized the gray-green uniform for standing out almost everywhere it’s been worn. Industry insiders have called the financial mess surrounding the pattern a “fiasco.”

The consensus among the researchers was the Army brass had watched the Marine Corps don their new uniforms and caught a case of pixilated camouflage envy.

“It was trendy,” Stewardson said. “If it’s good enough for the Marines, why shouldn’t the Army have that same cool new look?”

“Brand identity trumped camouflage utility,” Graves said. “That’s what this really comes down to: ‘We can’t allow the Marine Corps to look more cool than the Army.’ ”

Never understood the digital thing myself. Where the heck are you supposed to be blending in? In some crappy low-res pixelated digital world? lol

Damn, at least they could upgrade to hi-def camo.

Couldn't they have instead blown a few hundred thou on testing this design before buying FIVE FUCKING BILLION DOLLARS worth of this shit?

Can they even recoup some of the losses with sales to surplus stores or to some of our arms client states?

They need these. Weapons will not be necessary if you show up with one of these on.

It was all political, they saw the new Marine pattern and wanted something similar.

Thing is, the colors don't fit in anywhere and make soldiers stand out like sore thumbs. Someone ought to do a study and see if combat casualties were increased due to enemy combatants being able to target the ACU pattern.

The "one size fits all" approach is always an easier sell when trying to get something new. Which is what the ACU was "Not only do they look cooler but cam be used in multiple environments, cutting costs.....and did i mention they look REALLY cool?"

Soldiers in Afghanistan are wearing this MultiCam until a permanent replacement comes along.

The body armor on these air force uniforms look kind of like babies.

Ah yes, the body armor attaches directly to the nipples.

If a chick gets pregnant during active duty to avoid deployment she should have to forfiet all of her benefits.

The military is also giving away 500 million dollars a year in surplus equipment to local police who are in turn selling it and making a profit.

When I PCS'd to Wiesbaden back in 2003, a lot of young girls got let behind due to pregnancy. Funny thing is, they were all the same month pregnant; it's like they heard they were deploying soon and went out and screwed until pregnant.

Another way for women to avoid deployment is if they are single mothers; they abuse the family plan by claiming there are no family members or guardians available to take care of their children.

These fucking defense contractors are the biggest ripoff of taxpayer dollars. We might as well just hand our taxpayer dollars directly to them.

What another billion $$$ or two wasted on defense contracts...

The subs are just as bad or worse. Worked on one project where everyone was billing 60 to 100 hour weeks. They had a DBA that was onsite 24 hours a day like he was manning a drive-in for design requests. He had to be sleeping half the time.

I don't understand. So digital camo doesn't work? I thought it was the latest and greatest.

Not so much the digital design, rather the color that doesn't conceal in any environment. I really hope they do away with the velcro and go back to buttons or all zippers.

I remember watching this on TV years ago. I think the plan was having different colors for different environments, and tat thae digital design wasn't focused easily on the eyes. There were other ideas like cloth thick meshes that could stop a bullet too, but I have no idea how a much or why a simple pix-elated design can costs much of anything.

Velcro on combat equipment of any kind was a such a fucking stupid idea.

I heard somewhere that the digital camo was supposed to confound enemy night vision somehow. I didn't really understand that explanation then, either.

Digital camo is fine, its the trying to save money multi use crap that doesnt work. Cammo by definition has to be completely different for every place. Desert doesn work in the woods and vice versa. Making one for both just means you have shitty camo for two places

Well, if you're gonna pull off the gloves and use a Four-horse t-shirt (Mohammed, the prophet, loved horses), then we will have a war on our hands...

I think the Army will end up sticking with the digital pattern just have two color versions - woodland and desert. That is what the Marines did.
