It's a very overplayed song, but Jimmy Page's solo in "Stairway to Heaven" is one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded, IMO.

There are so many great Gilmour solos, it's hard to pick one.

Ritchie Blackmore had some incredible solos as well.

My favorite is from Sweet Child O Mine. I remember my older brother learning the riff and kind of trying to learn Slash's solo.

Gilmour has more high-quality guitar work than anyone I can think of. The long, slow, soloing he does in "Dogs" is a real stand-out.

Yeah, he has a strange way of bringing emotion to guitar solos and making every note count. It's so hard to do that and it's why no one else sounds like him.

+1 It's hard to top him.

I also agree on Stairway to Heaven. It's a shame that song got overkilled by decades of radio abuse. Page isn't even a great technical guitarist; the solo in Heartbreaker is played kind of sloppy but it's still epic:

Speaking of songs killed by radio, there are a lot of Lynard Skynard guitar solos that are great, especially the way they trade off between guitarists. Ones that come to mind are Simple Man and of course, Freebird.

If I hear Freebird on the radio I change the station until the guitar solo, then I crank it. Like five straight minutes of dual redneck rock guitar epicness.

Steely Dans Reelin in the Years has been played about 10,000x too many on radio, but it is a great solo. Jimmy Page has quoted this as one of his favorite solos.

What really stands out for me in that clip is how fucking awesome Glen Hughes' bassplaying and backing vocals are. Shit, no wonder the guy didn't stay long in Deep Purple, he almost upstages Ian Gillian! His old power trio Trapeze was a fairly decent band, too, but no guitar solos worthy of this thread.

Also, notice how in 1974 putting a giant rainbow up on stage didn't mean you were a bunch of homos yet.

He was a very good bass player, but kind of an asshole. He had a major drug problem and it may have contributed to Tommy Bolin's death. The reason he didn't stay long with DP is because they broke up, and the reason they broke up was him. He was a disaster and an embarrassment on stage due to constantly being wasted. One of their DVDs has a some interviews with him and Jon Lord where they explain the whole thing. He pretty much admits he was a fuckup.

BTW, he never played with Ian Gillan, just David Coverdale.

Yeah, Glenn had serious drug issues. I've heard him talk about it and he is now very distraught about it all. His drug problems were worse than Tommy Bolins. He said it never effected his bass playing, which was always amazing.
Sometimes he just went too far with his soulful singing and was turning the band into some sort of Motown/Rock fusion band. Blackmore hated it and split to form Rainbow.

Glenn ended up finding Jeebus and completely lost his mind, but he eventually sorted himself out and made some pretty good solo albums.

Their story about playing in Malaysia was incredible and someone should make a movie out of it.

@Wingnut
I love the UFO Phenomenon album, but I also love the earlier stuff with Mick Bolton on guitar.
Star Storm and Flying are great tunes. Mick Bolton went on to become Michael Schenkers guitar tech.

Speaking of 80s (NWHM non-hair) metal, Vivian Campbell was the best guitarist to play in Dio, too bad he was a dick who couldn't make it more than the first two albums. Now he's sentenced to playing "Pour Some Sugar on Love" for the rest of career with Def Lepard, but back then he was the man:

+1 I was thinking of randy Rhoads when I opened this thread. I kind of like zakk wylde too but his love affair with the whammy bar, his van halen influence, and the fact that when he tours with ozzy, he is largely playing Randy's work, it makes it hard to evaluate him On his own.

He is good though, and I love BLS too.

I saw her last weekend, she tours with Alice Cooper now who was opening for Iron Maiden.

Shitty mix though, I could hardly pick out her riffs. Cooper had a really good guitarist before I saw named Ryan Roxy or something. The Greek chick is pretty hot, but I don't know how he feels about sharing the riffs with her.

@Numbers Tomahawk

Glenn Hughes has a great voice and I think he had better bass runs than Roger Glover. But I've heard some live tracks of him that should be buried at sea- he had a tendency to get really histrionic and try a little too hard to shreik.Coke was definitely a factor.

If he had some discipline in the day, he could have carried the vocals himself, though Blackmore wanted Coverdale for his style similar to Paul Rodgers.

Plus he tried to take the band in a very funky direction.

He's clean and sober now! And of course he has a book to sell!

Good Glenn Hughes (one of my favorite tunes)

Hearing Zakk Wylde Sing or play guitar makes me want to stab myself in the eardrum.

Newsflash...EMG active pickups make your guitar sound cold, plastic and fake. There's no good sound there.

Not at all surprised he was mentioned here multiple times.

Well, although I'm not a fan of EMG's or active pups in general, some of the single coil units sound okay.

I also prefer single coils over most Humbuckers. Humbuckers tend to sound dull and thuddy to me. I have a few HB guitars, but use them only for specific parts in songs.

I recently purchased a Tele that I have fallen in love with. I've used it and another Tele on every song on my newest project.

Pretty much anything Danny Gatton ever played.

I remember watching him just tuning up and people would be like 'Holy shit, wtf did I just hear?'

Not technically a solo, because it's a duet, but Joe Walsh and Don Felder playing on the title track of the Eagles' Hotel California album (circa 1977), at about the 4:19 mark ...

What a weird thread. No sarcasm, no vitriol, no racism.

I'm old and don't listen to Pink Floyd much anymore but have to agree, Dave Gilmour is one of the best. It will be sad when he's no longer with us.
