Do most restaurants only hire attractive people?

Im not talking about places like "Hooters". But just run of the mill average restaurants (except fast food). I was just wondering if most waiters/waitresses are hired based on mostly appearance. Im not sure why that is. Also, it seems most are usually young and under 40. Is this pretty true, or is it only true of trendy nightclubs?

my boyfriend works in the restaurant industry, and he is pushing 40. I dont think they hire on appearance either, my guy has a scar on his face and a few facial piercings.

Depends on the restaurant.
If you're talking about ESPN Zone or Hard Rock, they're going to be younger, sexier and hipper.
If you're going to the Palm or Mortons, they are usually middle aged men who can converse and have the menu memorized and each cut of steak memorized.

Generally, yes. It also has to do with the labor supply, too. Serving is a job that pretty young women can get easily, and they can get tipped pretty well, too.
