Hey asshole riding his bike to work today...

You're supposed to dismount your bicycle before using crosswalks. When you're in the saddle you must obey motor vehicle laws. You give up your status as a pedestrian.

You're lucky you didn't get your ass flattened riding against traffic turning right on a green light. I bet you said to your wife as you headed out the door, "Don't worry honey, I'll be safe. I'll just ride in the crosswalks."

if i ruled the world i'd hit those fuckers in their fruity bike outfits as they fly thru the W, O & D crosswalk without bothering to look for oncoming traffic

how come the vienna cops ,who love a traffic/speed trap don't sit there and give out tickets to these effers

They're willing to die just to prove to you that they have the right to ride in this horrible traffic.

Today is Bike to Work day. I saw a few folks who should have driven or taken pubic transportation--they probably won't get on the bike again until the next Bike to Work day.

That's my entire issue with them.

Yes, btw, it's certainly against the law to blow through a crosswalk without first stopping (Where noted), although I've never heard of a law requiring someone to first dismount (Although it can be a good idea at times).

Steamroller, thank you for reminding us that there are drivers who are ignorant of Virginia laws and who don’t mind appearing stupid on the Internet because they can’t do a simple search. According to Virginia law, a bicycle rider at a crosswalk can walk his bicycle across OR he can ride it across, unless prohibited by official traffic control devices. He almost certainly had right of way in and at that crosswalk (traffic lights permitting).

§ 46.2-904. Use of roller skates and skateboards on sidewalks and shared-use paths; operation of bicycles, electric power-assisted bicycles, and electric personal assistive mobility devices on sidewalks and crosswalks and shared-use paths; local ordinances.

A person riding a bicycle, electric personal assistive mobility device, or an electric powerassisted bicycle on a sidewalk, shared-use path, or across a roadway on a crosswalk, shall have all the rights and duties of a pedestrian under the same circumstances.

http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+46.2-904

§ 46.2-924. Drivers to stop for pedestrians; installation of certain signs; penalty.

A. The driver of any vehicle on a highway shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian crossing such highway:

1. At any clearly marked crosswalk, whether at mid-block or at the end of any block;
2. At any regular pedestrian crossing included in the prolongation of the lateral boundary lines of the adjacent sidewalk at the end of a block;
3. At any intersection when the driver is approaching on a highway or street where the legal maximum speed does not exceed 35 miles per hour.

B. Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection A of this section, at intersections or crosswalks where the movement of traffic is being regulated by law-enforcement officers or traffic control devices, the driver shall yield according to the direction of the law-enforcement officer or device.

No pedestrian shall enter or cross an intersection in disregard of approaching traffic.

The drivers of vehicles entering, crossing, or turning at intersections shall change their course, slow down, or stop if necessary to permit pedestrians to cross such intersections safely and expeditiously.

Pedestrians crossing highways at intersections shall at all times have the right-of-way over vehicles making turns into the highways being crossed by the pedestrians.

My opinion and your opinion are not really valuable to this discussion. I would instead look to what some dead white men wrote.

At a crosswalk Virginia courts have held “the pedestrian has a superior right -- that is, the right to cross from one side of the street to the other in preference or priority over vehicles -- and drivers of vehicles must respect this right and yield the right of way to the pedestrian. The pedestrian's right of way extends from one side of the street to the other. It does not begin at any particular point in the intersection nor does it end at any particular point. It begins on one side of the street and extends until the pedestrian has negotiated the crossing.” (Marshall v. Shaw. Supreme Court of Virginia, 1955) ( http://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=2476417758289562501&hl=en&as_sdt=2&as_vis=1&oi=scholarr )

"The duty of a motor vehicle driver on approaching an intersection is to keep a vigilant lookout for pedestrians between curbs on the traveled portion of the highway, and when pedestrians are negotiating the crossing, or about to step from the side into traffic lanes, to operate his car at such speed and under such control that he can readily turn one way or the other, and, if necessary, bring his machine to a stop in time to avoid injury to pedestrians." (Sawyer v. Blankenship, Supreme Court of Virginia, 1933) ( http://va.findacase.com/research/wfrmDocViewer.aspx/xq/fac.19330615_0040113.VA.htm/qx )

There are red stop signs at the crosswalk going across Church Street in Vienna. Many bicyclists don't bother to stop

c'mon people - you're supposed to SHARE the road with cyclists!!

you know what that means - it means YOU are supposed to get out of their way, whether you are walking, driving, sitting, or eating, laws be DAMNED!

At least a car driver is just being stupid when they are driving all inattentive. It's HILARIOUS to me to notice that most cyclists dont realize that THEY ARE JUST AS INATTENTIVE AS MOST VEHICLE DRIVERS, that they are NO BETTER than the SUV driver they always complain about.

But the little difference they choose to CONTINUOUSLY ignore: that when they are being inattentive, they ALWAYS forget that they are choosing to be suicidal as well as stupid.

Old man who blew thru that intersection in Crosspointe last week is lucky to be able to walk this week, y'know?

Wrong. On the W&OD trail at Ayr Hill, there is a Stop sign - not on Ayr HIll, but on the trail. He obviously ran it.

Went over to Vienna to take in Viva Vienna today. Big crowds. Watched the bicycle nazis get all bent out of shape over the fact that the W&OD trail was being used by thousands of families, retirees, and kids.

Great schadenfreude today.

Spotsylvania County resident Allison R. Britt was killed early this morning on her bicycle when it was struck by a car on Courthouse House Road, the sheriff's office said today.

Mike Harvey, Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Britt was 49 years old and she died at the scene. She was riding her bike at 2:30 a.m. in the eastbound lane on Courthouse Road near Bloomsbury Lane when she was hit by a white 1999 four-door Volkswagen Passat.

"The bicyclist was not wearing reflective gear nor was the bicycle equipped with lights," Harvey said.

Harvey said family members were notified this morning and told deputies that she was known to ride her bike late at night.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office accident reconstruction team responded to the scene to investigate the crash and had to close Courthouse Road for several hours.

"At this time speed, alcohol, and drugs do not appear to be a factor. The investigation is continuing," Harvey said.
