LFF's "land of suck" exurb traffic argument is so excruciatingly tired. He has zero credibility on the subject since he was making the same argument when his commute was one flight of stairs (which he was historically incapable of making 100% of the time). News Flash, the commute from GAINESVILLE to DC at 7:00-9:00AM is going to be terrible. It's a carved-in-stone fact. It's equivalent to saying Blob(b) is morbidly obese and Oscar laughs like a little girl being tickled by a naughty uncle. No one, except apparently one "Michael Sean Patrick O'Meara", is surprised by that fact.
There's a reason "Location, Location, Location" is such a real estate cliche. Some people are cool with commuting from Winchester, Fredericksburg or even spots in West Virginia to the DC/NoVA area. People also choose to live in Gainesville, Haymarket and Manassas. What I have not frequently encountered, aside from Mike's fucked out ramblings, are people who think they have a constitutional right to live in BFE and still have a "money metal commute". There's a reason that distance from DC is directly proportional to real estate value. If you want to live way out there, deal with the consequences.
Mike, *YOU* chose to put your dumbass, destined to fail, bar in Manassas.
*YOU* chose to live there.
*YOU* chose to commute from Manassas and/or Haymarket to Fairfax, Rockville, Fairfax again, and DC (at 5:00AM). In the past 15 (20?) years, none of these have been good commutes during rush hour. It's a known quantity. You're not "sticking it to the man", "raging against the machine", or making a bit or sense by saying the DC Mayor should fix 66 in Arlington.
If you could afford to stay in a hotel for a week, you wouldn't be commuting from Gainesville. Take some personal responsibility. Acknowledge that you were touched inappropriately by a granite countertop salesman at some point.
I don't enjoy a long commute, so I chose to live in Fairfax. I've worked in DC, Herndon, Reston, McLean, Sterling, Rockville and Bethesda, and have yet to have a consistently miserable commute.
(as a side note, should we buy a brick at Jimmy's?)
