Hideous Color From the '70s

How did this color ever become popular? It wasn't just on cars, it was in homes, on furnishings and appliances. Ugh.

I believe you're referring to the color that was commonly known as "avocado". I always thought of it as puke green. And speaking of the 70s, the 2012 color of the year is Tangerine Tango (Pantone 17-1463) - in-your-face orange. Get used to seeing it.

But if you think that is bad, take a look at the 2011 color of the year - Honeysuckle.

P.S. I apologize in advance for attaching what are probably large images. Not my forte.

Eh, still not as offensive as that vintage green.

It was often used in concert with a pumpkin orange and/or a dull mustard yellow. Looked like someone puked all over your wall or whatever.

I think they should bring back that surf blue color they used on 1950s cars, but it only works if the car is cool enough.

Overall, I think cars are painted so plainly today. Every once in a awhile, someone will offer a color like burnt orange, or Ford offering their "Grabber Blue" but in the name of profitability the makers have reduced the number of available colors in their palettes. Look around...everything is typically black, silver, white or gray. I've always preferred British Racing Green but then, I've always driven British cars...

The color is making a comeback in the Radiophile household, or it never left.

Check out the fringe on the placemat on his table....

the Honeysuckle is frightening. reminds me of the '1980's Mauve'
Tango Tangerine is reminiscent of neon/dayglo; again with the 80's.

decades are products of decades past. Avocado Green ain't done with us yet.

That shade of green looks good on a Mini.

Actually, that looks more like "lime green" (the lighting seems to make it darker). Avocado is a "muddy" green with brown overtones (see first pic). Lime green is a vibrant green with a strong yellow influence (see second pic). Lime green is actually quite popular now, but it works best as an accent.

Mauve was its own unique brand of hideous. Like avocado, it was a "muddy" sort of pink. It was often combined with gray and teal in the 80s. Let's hope it never makes a resurgence.

Look at the station floor color, the outside of the train brown and the yellow seats inside the train. YUCK.

^^^ that is a BEAUTY of a car. Growing up, I remember my grandad had one of these and the seats would be scorching in the summers. I would hop in the back, no car seats back then, my grandad would light up a pipe and granny would let the most spectacularly smelly farts - all while receiving 2nd degree burns on the back of my thighs and legs. My brothers and I would be dying in the back but if we dared to speak up, our grandad would threaten to hook us up to the electric fence battery back at their farm. I am pretty sure he was joking...but we never tested the waters on that one.

Wow, that brings back memories. As a child, our whole house was that color inside. The sofas, walls, and the green shag carpeting. But, guess it was cool back then.

A person who picks puke green must have problems with their eyes/color blindness.

Back then it was puke green and shit brown and off yellow type color as if it was pee/urine mixed with milk.

My grandfather had an early 70s Plymouth Fury 4-door in dark blue with a black vinyl hardtop. Thing was a gi-hugic boat, you could've installed a swimming pool in the back seat. My uncle had a gigantic 4-door 73 Chevy Impala in dark red, also a land yacht. It had power windows and locks and everything, that stuff was all extra in the 70s. What awesome cars, V8 engines and the smoothest ride ever, we'd just fly down the interstate at like 80 gliding along. They sucked when you wanted to park them in a tight space, though, and the gas mileage was shitty, but not as bad as you'd think with no smog control shit on them.
