most music teachers don't really teach that much, they show you the right thing to do and then you must... get this shit... practice your ass off

you're already fucked, most people who become good at music do so with or without a teacher. Eddie Van Halen taught himself. Taught himself how to drink, too.

I took piano lessons as a kid and that provided good background. Then I picked up guitar and bass later on in life on my own. I mainly did this by deciding what kind of music I wanted to play, then figured out those guitar riffs and basslines.

I think what helped me most is playing along with things in total darkness. That got my eyes off the instrument and I really learned how to play. I guess this only works if you have a good ear... I knew plenty of band weenies who couldn't play anything if they weren't reading off sheet music. I guess I'm lucky that with a one-song runthrough I can usually play it.

Call Kingstown Acoustic in Alexandria. They offer lessons.

People are always offering music lessons on Craigslist, too. Just go to the musician section.

HOWEVER... If you're too lazy to even make the effort of learning yourself, I wonder how much benefit you'll really get from paying someone for lessons. There are websites that offer free instructional videos, chord/picking/strumming exercises, and everything you'd ever want to know about playing guitar, not to mention what's available on YouTube. I didn't have this vast amount of knowledge available to me when I taught myself guitar, so there's really no excuse for someone who's even halfway serious about it.

yeah, +1 on youtube. Lots of little training videos and stuff there, at least enough to get you started.
