Virginia Defense Force

I just saw something about these guys. What do they do exactly? According to Wikipedia they haven't been involved in any war since the Civil War, they look they're made up of a bunch of crazy right wingers who couldn't get into the United States military, but our government still shells out $240,000 a year for their annual budget. They are the Virginia Defense Force. They conduct traffic drills at the apple bossom festival, and they get called out for things the VA national guard cant attend to. Like traffic corrdination.

They are usually good people, it is like CERT but in camo.

Join em....NOW!

They are a "standby corps" that are utilized during emergencies and natural disasters. They are trained in emergency procedures that include but are not limited to: search/rescue, disaster prepare., evacuation, riot control, that sort of thing. From what I understand they have been used to augment the National Guard in the past in time of crisis.

Honestly great folks with great intentions. They are a "just in case" militia. Currently they have no authority and, at best, back the Guard if and when the guard isn't available. No guns and no real capabilities.

Yeah I remember last June I went to go see a career counselor because I was going on another year without a career relevant to my degree. Or any career which could move me out of my parent's house! Anyways I thought I would give the career counselor a shot. One of his suggestions for his "strategy," was to join the Virginia Guard so I would be given military priority. I don't see how considering they're not even affiliated with the US Army other than their rank structure. Otherwise neither AAFES or DeCA recognizes them as authorized customers (and honestly after seeing the size of that one dude I wouldn't either) and they're not authorized to use any of their facilities. I am not knocking the defense force, I think it's a good back up plan as long as the members don't go overboard and start bringing their own weapons to training.

Mall ninjas. They serve no point and have never been utilized in any state of emergency. Not allowed to have firearms while "on duty" period. The NG won't even give them hand me downs and they have to buy all their own equipment. What a waste of tax dollars this bunch is. From what I understand the train at picket and their duties include setting up chairs for events.

It's people who can't be in the military pretending that they are in the military. Their only real function is to maintain National Guard facilities in the state when the unit is deployed. But do you really need to wear camo and do military drills to mop a fucking floor? No. Not really.

Make all the jokes you want but I know a couple dudes who serve active duty with the VDF and trust me you would not fuck with them. These guys came straight out if Ft. Benning, special weapons training, E-6 commando squad leaders. The physical training alone would disqualify most people and they are required to know a marshall arts skill. Weapon proficiency is a must, from edged weapons all the way up to full battle array. Fully automatic +. It's alot tougher than you'd expect, and they do it for their own bravery, no compensation, no nothing.

Trust me I wouldn't considering the VDF isn't active duty rather reserve. So sounds like they have a lot of time on their hands to play CoD and Battlefield 3 purchased through their 240K budget.

Really? So instead of reenlisting as a SSG when their EAS was open or at the very least serving out their remaining contract in the reserves they chose the VDF? So pretty much instead of keeping a possible retirement with the Army they chose a state defense force? Brilliant! I'll be promoted to platoon sgt in no time at Benning!

It must be because you see they aren't allowed to use weapons so why would they go through the training? Unless they are doing this in their own free time which in that case becomes more of a hobby than part of the actual training to become a VDF member

> It's alot tougher than you'd

So again that's why your buddies from Benning decided not to reenlist as SSG or join the reserves instead of the VDF where they would at least be compensated? I'm not saying it isn't tough but looking at some of their members I highly doubt at least half of them could even pass the APFT or the body fat standards.

Because having busted knees and bad backs will not allow them to re-enlist!

There is no basic training for the VDF, except for an online CERT and a couple of FEMA courses which are all done online.

Go to drill once a month, and do DnC for 3-4 hours, practice wrestling with each other...learn old school riot guard stances with a wooden baton. Kiss ass and get promoted.

Trust me, there is no special forces (only in their minds) in the VDF! Now there are a few who work for DoD as civilians. But that is about it. Anyone one with a heartbeat can join, and a somewhat clean record, you are in.

It is a good idea to have a state reserve that is willing to serve, but at the same time, there should be physical standards. Being 5'9" and weighing 320lbs is not buff. Being an old school 'airborne' is great, but hey...you are not one now, and even if you tried, you would not make the cut.

There are a few retirees that play with radios, but they are hamm operators in camo?!?!?

It is more than smoke and mirrors.

No one of his suggestions instead of joining the national guard was to join the Virginia Defense Force. I remember he even showed me the website and I thought to myself "what the hell?" He said that if I joined the defense guard it would be looked at the same as being in the reserves. Needless to say I didn't return to that career counselor and actually demanded my money back.

I think the real question that should be asked is: should VA enact 2 years of compulsory VDF service for all physically fit residents under the age of 35? It should be mandatory for Virginians to serve the commonwealth's defense force, and would give citizens a great opportunity to get out and see the entire state and make a difference in the community. This was proposed in Richmond awhile back, but of course the stupid libs under Mark Warner refused to bring it to a vote.

I personally think it would be a good thing. Teach young men & women some responsibility and instill a sense of pride and commrodery among state residents.

3 questions. Go on the VA Web site and request info. I am sure they will hound you till you either, move, die, or tell them to F##k off. But then again they may dishonorably discharge on you.

In short the VDF is cool for someone wanting to know what the army is about. They do follow certain regulations stolen from US Army FM (field manuals)

Their is pay when on State Active Duty, however, it will be the lowest of lows...like work for 3 days and get paid $11.00 military style.

I see talk about them being ex Special Force types: sure there may be a few, but their special forces day are history. There is no special requirement to join. No BMT, and if they want special training, well I hear that the Krav Maga place will train you if you pay their full price subscription.

This is cool for retirees, and those with special needs (i.e. look at me, I am one bad ass mamma jamma.) You do not get ANY special recognition, other than at the state level, if any. You can get a groovy VDF license from the DMV, but it may take 2-5 years depending on how fast 'headquaters' gets and returns you paperwork.

For any prospects, please do your country a great service and consider joining the active duty Virginia National Guard. Joining the VDF, will not help you with recruitment.

I know all this because I asked, 'Hey what are you guys all about'?

Yours truly,

3rd MALT. Alfa Romero Ferrarigini
9th MP Battalion, Black Sheep Brigade, 4th Regiment

Interesting posts; let me respond. I have been in the VDF for nearly four years. The VDF is governed by Virginia Code, period. We dont make it up, we follow the regulations. We have made great progress in the past few years; and yes, some of our people have weight issues (welcome to America). But, all of us are volunteers and we have our own reasons for joining. Yeah, my knees are bad after years of running/ruckmarching every day and 72 jumps. But that doesnt diminish what I did or what I still do for Virginia even if the haters and trolls just dismiss it.

We continue to serve and are the ones standing shoulder to shoulder with the Guard during disasters and assisting with civil events. We are not a bunch of right wingers; the photos posted here are merely representative of what America looks like, sorry if we are not Hollywood versions of soldiers, but we still are serving and will continue to do so.

This CERT is not like the CERT we do in Fairfax. We do not wear camoflage, we have vests and helmets and packs. Our training is tough, not everyone can pass it. These people are not CERT.

CERT rocks!

The chick on the left, if she had an upper lip, would be cute in my book. Also, I laughed at the blood dripping down the poor kid's face on the tires ( is it a girl or guy, though?)...it makes the VDF look tough as nails! lol

I'm not down on the VDF at all but this picture of the senior officers
reminds me of what the real Army was like before they established a
height/weight requirement back in the 70's. Notice they all have closely
cropped hair and spit shined boots but can't remember the last time they
could look down and see their toes. They can direct traffic all they want
but I sure as Hell wouldn't want them on my flanks in a firefight.

Does the state fund any of the VDF's activities?

The middle aged gentleman in camo, first picture:

is that a muskrat snoozing on his skull? And they're gonna "protect us" from whom or from what?

The local Girl Scout troop rounding up random men to forcibly test their strap ons?

When the NK airborne drops out of the sky on Fair Oaks Mall they better watch out.
The geriatric brigade might challenge them to a round of croquet for blood.
