Romney and Seamus the Dog

It’s a question that has dogged him for years. Why did Mitt Romney once strap the family dog in its carrier to the roof of the car and then set off on a summer vacation to Canada?

The story of the family pet, Seamus, appeared in a 2007 Boston Globe piece.

“As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ‘Dad!’ he yelled. ‘Gross!’ A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours.

As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.”

New York Times columnist Gail Collins has famously skewered Mr. Romney for the episode, so much so that some might call it an obsession.

In an interview ranging from the candidate’s shift to a general election tone to the causes of the financial crisis, The Wall Street Journal asked Mr. Romney to give his side of the Seamus story.

“Uh…,” Mr. Romney said, clearly at a loss for words. “Love my dog.”

“That’s all I’ve got for ya,” he added.

But asked to rebut Ms. Collins’ insinuations that he had been mean to his dog, Mr. Romney said, “Oh please. I’ve had a lot of dogs and love them and care for them very deeply.”

At which point his aide said: “We’ve gotta get running.”

I think the guy is a sociopath who has no compassion for anyone or anything.

Romney was quoted saying "I was in the kitchen, Seamus my old hound was outside".

I only approve of this pet transfer method for cats.

Clinton was a sociopath and was a great President. Do you have a point?

Why would you suggest sticking the cleaner of the two animals outside?

Because cats suck. Sorry, I'm a dog person.

See, in that case you shouldn't purchase a cat. Much simpler solution.
Why would you buy an animal you dislike only to torment it?

Clinton was a narcissist. A narcissist and sociopath are not the same thing.

Clinton had a healthy disregard for the rights of others. He masked it well and even had the whole "I feel your pain" mantra. Underneath all of that, he could have given a rat's ass about anyone other than himself. His lifelong pattern of behavior exemplifies sociopathy. Narcissism is just one condition that commonly coexists with sociopathy.

Sociopaths torture animals and go after those who are weaker or less able to fight back. I never really saw that from Clinton. I've seen that from Romney.

God you guys are slow, I'd have thought someone would've dug this up before me, but as the resident prog rock fan I guess it's up to me to find ancient Pink Floyd references....

The song was the first thing i thought of when i saw the thread title and I actually listened to Meddle on my way home yesterday. that's one of the better Floyd albums, but I never really liked the song Seamus and usually skip over it. it seems kinda out of place on that album.

The link between socipathy and animal cruelty is questionable. If you are cruel to animals, it doesn't mean you are a sociopath and if you are a sociopath, it doesn't mean that you will definitely be cruel to animals.

Like interns, subordinates, an others? Sociopaths are also very deceptive, repeatedly lie, never show remorse, and never have guilt. I think we can agree that Clinton demonstrated all of these.

> I never

I think you need to study up on sociopathy.

I just listened to it the other day, too, and I think the same thing about that song. But I always thought the howling and whining sound of the dog was some kind of special electronic effect that Gilmoure and Waters did, which fits in with the trippy noises thing. A lot of the stuff on those pre-Dark Side albums is just plain wierd.
