The Wildhearts were definitely underated back then. Blame the mainstream's infatuation with grunge on this side of the pond. These guys kept it real.

The Brits had "Britpop" as their reaction to grunge, spawning Oasis and the like.

Northman mentioned 7 Mary 3, I used to confuse them with Bighead Todd and the Monsters for some reason. I remember seeing this episode of David Lettermen, and after this clip ends Lettermen says to the audience, "Look at the size of this guy's head!"

A lot of 90s bands aren't really "underrated", but one-hit wonders or only a couple of hits. Blind Melon, Cracker, and Breeders come to mind.

I really liked Verruca Salt. The nice thing about females, besides having lady parts and being soft and warm, is that they can't sing in that cliche 90s Eddie Vedderish grunge voice that every grunge band tried to imitate. And these girls rocked pretty good.

I always liked this song Shutterbug by Veruca Salt but they were starting to fade...it didn't get enough play.

I have one of the best non Iphones on the market.. My specs are technically better than that of any Iphone. Does this happen to anyone else?

That's why I didn't post the Blind Melon and other stuff I mentioned. Even my computer gets slow after like 20 vids are posted in here.

That Verucca Salt Shutterbug song is probably their best one. I like riff-based rock, and VS knew how to do it. Last I heard the band still exists but one of the girls left or was kicked out or something.

If I had to pick an overrated 90s band I would pick Foo Fighters. No interesting riffs, just power chords and loud yelling vocals that bore me. They have a couple of good songs, though. Everlong has a good riff and the vocals work well.

To be fair Cracker and the Breeders were both formed by former members of pretty successful bands. Camper Van Beethoven and Pixies respectively.

Speaking of the Pixies, probably THE underrated band of the 90s. It’s amazing to me that the Breeders’ first album sold more than all of the Pixies albums combined.

Being from DC, we’ve all heard of Fugazi but they are really underrated everywhere else. It’s crazy to think that Nirvana opened for THEM back in the day.

I’d also add DC bands Shudder to Think, The Dismemberment Plan, and Jawbox. All bands who signed to majors and didn’t get far but were excellent none the less.

Agree with Pavement also.

Pretty much everything Mould did in the 80s and 90s was brilliant. Then around 2000 he got all electronica… err.. ah.. no thanks. :(

I’d also add Dinosaur Jr, Swervedriver, Ride, and My Bloody Valentine. Can’t talk about the 90’s without mentioning shoegaze.

kudos to the Pavement call out....lo fi ruled there for a while. same for big head todd. they did some mainstream air play, with later albums, but sister sweetly is pretty much awesome from beginning to end. i recall going to wolf trap several years ago when they played. they were opening for pootie and blowing fish, and the people we sat next to, same age as us, had no idea who who BHT were. i told them, theyre light years better than pootie, just wait. worked out perfectly, for just as BHT ended the skies opened up and it poured for like an hour, we were planning on ditching then anyway.

i wouldnt call Cracker a one hit wonder, not by any stretch. maybe a one album wonder, kerosene hat, but that's about it. the firt two albums were great.

neds atomic dustbin was another somewhat under the radar band, outside of college radio and hfs. their third album was a bit of a downer, but the first two were brilliant.

ditto for teenage fanclub, although Spin gave Bandwagonesque album of the year over Nevermind, so Spin didnt "under rate" them.

Superchunk was a pretty good indie band back in the mid-90's. I was a big Mudhoney fan too.

+1 to whoever listed clutch above. I was just listening to impetus the other day.

Also, any of the Lou Barlow bands were pretty sweet - Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh and Sentridoh, which includes this gem:

I still keep alot of 90s lo-fi stuff in regular rotation on my iPhone. Guided by Voices, Pavement, The Grifters, the early Ween albums. Those records don't sound nearly as dated as the grunge/post-grunge stuff that was huge at the time.

I really loved Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains back then but never have the urge to listen to them. But I still love listening to albums like Pavement's "Slanted and Enchanted" or GbV's "Alien Lanes".

Sponge was pretty good. At least their first two albums in the early/mid 90's were. I think they now have about 5 albums total, but Rotting Pinata and Wax Estatic were their best. Not quite alternative, not quite rock.

Bim Skala Bim were not just a very good 'third wave' ska band....they were a very good band, period. Very nice song-writing, lovely vocals, melodies.....this was the maybe the third or fourth CD that hooked me on the Jamaican sound, many years ago....and when you pop, you can't stop.....

Hard to believe that Superchunk's "No Pocky For Kitty" came out the same month as Nirvana's "Nevermind". Early indie rock like this was totally overshadowed by the whole grunge thing.

I was WAY more into Nirvana back then, but even 20 yrs later Superchunk's first few records are way more rockin.

OK, anyone who mentions Sublime, Bush or Counting Crowes obviously was not alive in the 90's. They were all huge! so that makes being "underrated" not possible (and not a knock on them as bands)

Let's really think people! Like Tripping Daisy, 2 Skinnee J's, Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth and Gerardo (Rico Suave, circa 1991!)

Sweet thistle pie? Euro trash girl? which one of these is Cracker's one hit wonder? Or are you referring to Low? I'm confused b/c they were all huge hits.

I could talk 90's music all day. I'm a huge Nirvana fan, Alice in Chains, Rage, Sponge, STP, etc. and had to say that to verify that although I wouldn't rank the following above those, they are definitely more in the range of "underrated" and Veruca Salt and Sneaker Pimps are great calls!

Yeah, I suppose you are technically correct. I would argue that neither really developed a big following until the 90's. They were both virtually unknown until signing with big labels in the early 90's but yes, you are correct. Each was proabably 10 years old by then.

Props to whoever know who they were before 1990 though. For those folks, I'd love to see what you have on your ipod b/c you know your stuff.

while he got airplay, both mainstream/alernative radio and MTV, his Girlfriend album was phenominal. the follow ups never equaled it, but that doesnt take away how good that one was.

sometimes an artist/band is a "one hit wonder", but theyre actually money, and MS is exactly that with Girlfriend.

The Meat Puppets achieved mainstream popularity in the 90s after Kurt Cobain covered their songs on that Nirvana/MTV-Unplugged album. They owe alot to him, he was a big fan.
