I was a server for Bertuccis and it sucked. Manager would yell at every employee but I never saw him get off his fat ass.

The great thing about waitering is that there were always waitresses....Most all of them would fuck after a couple of closing time drinks.

Counter person/ice cream scooper at Baskin Robbins one summer. Honestly, it wasn't a terrible job. But it was hot (summer, weak air conditioning, and the door often open with a line of people stretching outside) and very sticky with all the ice cream getting on your hands, arms, and clothing. Plus, after a few hours your scooping arm started going kind of numb. And the pay wasn't very good.

Actually, thinking about it, there was one job that was worse. I was working for a temp agency, and one week we were out near Dulles in a warehouse moving food service items from one location to another. That was hot, exhausting work. It paid a lot better than Baskin Robbins, but for a good reason.

What I haven't done--and I expect would be far worse than those--would be a roofer during the summer, or pumping out septic tanks during the summer.

The kitchen was full of recovering drug addicts with terrible attitudes. One of the "chefs" had knifed someone as a minor and was under a supervised work program. The owner was an alcoholic who screamed at everyone. Being the new guy in the kitchen, I got to do the shit work, like clean the rot from the vegetables in the fridge. I did this for a month and said, "fuck it." I went back to a job I had had at a fast food chain. The owner was actually pretty nice and the kitchen had AC.

I was a chambermaid for several years in high school and college. You learn a lot about people. Of course, a lot of it you didn't actually want to learn. I'd never seen a condom, a flasher, serious porn, people having sex, and a few other things before. The nicest people were older, single women. The biggest pigs in all respects were families. I bet kids now wouldn't even dream of doing a job this "demeaning". Kind of sad.

M.C. Dean. Don't let the big name fool you. One of the most poorly managed companies in the DC area. If you are a professional but want to be treated like you are a kid at summer camp, this is the place for you.

The Computer Sciences Corp. IRS 'modernization' contract at the IRS/Lanham compound. I say compound because uber physical security was required, Lanham is a seriously dangerous suburban ghetto. There was at least one murder at the Lanham metro station while I worked there and the train ride to the compound takes you through really charming Metro stops like Deanwood and Minnesota Avenue.

Once you arrived at work the fun started. The CSC managers had no idea what they were doing other than spending the IRS's money at an astounding rate, so screaming matches, verbal threats and sudden firings were the norm. Often people were ordered to drive 80 miles to the IRS data center in West Virginia at the drop of a hat only to discover upon arrival no clearance had been arranged for them to enter the building! So they had to turn around and drive back. CSC/Northrop concocted a 'rule' designating West Virginia as a 'DC Metro location' so there was no mileage reimbursement for the WVa trips.

The turnover rate was astounding, if you didn't get fired with no warning or have your position eliminated from one day to the next, the only alternative was finding a new gig, so that, in the end, was the real work being done - almost everyone was looking for a new job.

That was 10 years ago - believe it or not, the same contract lurches on today, probably managed by some of the same psychotics that were there in 2001/2.

BTW, I lasted four months, seemed like fourty.

The worst job I had was working in a plant nursery/landscaping company. If I wasn't standing directly in the August sun watering hundreds of plants or fetching bags of mulch/compost for customers, I was filling in on the landscaping crews and doing all of the shit work while the main guys sat around doing nothing. All for $4.25/hour.

I also worked in the kitchen of a retirement home in Reston for a summer with my girlfriend. Show up at 3:30, get the dining room ready, put the food out for the residents and clean up afterwards. it was actually a cool job. It took about 5 hours each evening, got paid in cash, the old people were really nice and a lot of times after the cook would leave I'd bang her real quick because there was nobody around that wing of the building.

I was a teller at a bank. Worst job ever! I had to deal with a lot of crap from customers, the pay was horrible and the manager was always pushing us to "upsell", on top of it all we had to work weekends and holidays....

lord have mercy that was slightly less than fun. some of the guys that worked there were cool, and fun to hang around with, but the job itself blew.

i was on the "B shift", B there when it opened and i'd B there when it closed. m- f, 7 to 6, saturdays 8 to 3 i think. only 1 saturday off a month, crap hourly pay, and i would stink like every chemical known to man.

I had to clean up in its' entirety, a bakery, on Sunday mornings. Got there at 6AM, left maybe by 5PM. No breaks allowed. No sampling the goods either! It was beyond gross. Mice, rats, their poop....and everything was covered in sugar and or flour. It was absolutely back-breaking work. Hourly pay, and, because I was such a player, I got the below minimum wage. The homeless would go thru the trash, looking for scraps, and then poop in empty fruit cans. Guess which loser then had to go out, toss away the cans, and pick up everything else? Wow

Working in a restaurant in any capacity is the worse. I bussed tables when I was 15 during one summer. You clean the tables, other times you had to work in the kitchen putting hundreds of plates and utensils on a conveyor belt to be washed. It must have been 130 in that room. Not only did the job suck ass you also were paid below minimum wage because sometimes, maybe one in a thousand a customer would leave a tip.

btw I still have nightmares that I am working in that hell hole. Talk about PTSD.

Keep dreaming. My friend works in a high end hotel restaurant and yes it does happen. Food drops on the floor no big deal back on the plate it goes. Angry customer keeps sending it back the cook adds a little extra. You think the illegals prepping the salads give a shit if they washed their hands or not after going to the bathroom.

I didnt say I did it, I said I had observed it. Cooks will not throw another T bone on just because they dropped one on the floor that is ready to go. It is picked up and put back on the plate.

I had a stint as a car stereo installer many years ago during a job transition time in my life. I took a job at a shitty small car stereo place working for a Palastinian(won't say which one) cheap MFer. I had to bring my own tools and he was all wierd about thinking you would steel supplies from him(wiring, connectors, etc. and he had the cheapest crimps and wires). Ghetto customers came in with shitty used speakers and stolen shit to put in old hoopties and wrong speaker sizes forcing you to improvise on the install, etc. The boss would come into the shop constantly and say "hurry it up", other customers were waiting to have installs. I remember at the end of the day he would write on a paper the list of what he would pay you for the installs you did, then start writing all these deductions from it and the figure which started out looking like "wow not bad" ended up being like 5-7 dollar an hour type work. So he charges shop labor like 40 bucks an hour but then pays you morsels. Keep in mind that my own tools costed hundreds of dollars. Plus it became clear that the place wasn't all that happening so some days I would be there for many hours with no installs and I got paid zip! After a few weeks he started insisting that I come in full time. I said I can't live on your pay and that I post on Craigslist and do installs and make a ton more. I walked out and ended up doing CL installs making pretty good bank in driveways and parking lots on my own.

You really should check up on any restaurants you frequent. You might be surprised. Even more surprising is some of them stay in operation after repeated critical violations that are more than just someone not washing his hands.

Worst job was when I moved to Rochester, NY in 1983. I signed up at a temp agency and they put me to work at a mortgage processing center. My job was to "arrange" the folders of people who were trying to get mortgages. I had a fricking long list of what to look for in the folder. The problem was that every piece of paper (and there were lots) in each folder was not standard at all---all different and many that didn't pertain. Small writing all over the place. I think I finished doing 2 folders the first day (and who knows if they were right). Even worse were the people I had to work with. Going on break with a bunch of drug addicted dropouts! I had a college degree. I don't know how they could even read what was in the folders. Anyway, I asked for a different job on day 2 and the agency said I had to finish the week before I could get another job. Day 3 was my last day.

Living in the Shenandoah valley, I bailed hay, cleaned out turkey houses,mucked out horse stalls, butchered pigs, last but certainty not least, cleaning out silos.

We used to bomb them, you can buy Groundhog gas bombs. You find the second exit, cover it up with a piece of sod, the light the fuse of the gas bomb after you pierced it with a nail, chuck it down the hole and cover the hole with a pc. of sod also. They die from the gas. I worked on a cattle ranch and the cattle would break legs in those varmint's holes.

I worked at a gym when I was 18, and they talked me into doing sales. Other than going to NYC for a week to train, the job BLEW. Maybe I just hated sales in general, idk. I lasted less than two months. My boss was a pig and did not train me at all, yet expected me to put up ridiculous numbers with zero help.
