VIDEO: Metrobus Collisions Caught On Camera
WASHINGTON - Metro cameras catch bus drivers crashing into cars, running red lights and hitting people. They captured hundreds of near misses and collisions during a two-month period in August and September. These drive cams as they're called, are triggered by sudden breaking or jerk in movement.
One of the most disturbing videos shows a Metrobus going down the street. The traffic in the right two lanes is stopped, but the bus keeps going. Suddenly you see a man in the crosswalk get clipped. There is a loud thump and riders scream as the bus hits the brakes. Somehow, the man walked away.
Another video clip shows a bus approaching an SUV at a stop sign. It never appears to slow down and slams into the SUV. That causes a chain reaction crash, sending the SUV crashing into the back of a school bus.
These are some of the hundreds of videos first obtained by WTOP radio from bus drive cams. Every bus has one. Metro says the operators in these videos have already faced disciplinary action if warranted.
In some cases, it appears other vehicles cut in front of buses. Drivers may be punished with a warning and suspension. If it happens three times within a year, you're fired, but sometimes it takes just one.
"In the event that the incident is egregious and a huge mistake, then the disciplinary action could be moved up faster and termination could take place earlier," said Jack Requa, Assistant General Manager of Bus Services.
The videos represent the worst of the worst, but Metro says they don't happen very often.
If you look at the numbers, the transit agency has 1,250 buses on the road, making 14,400 trips on weekdays and covering 50 million miles a year.
"I think these are just the rare examples. We have many clips that indicate and show where operators have done the right thing to avoid an incident, an accident: a pedestrian walking into the street, double parked cars, u-turns," Requa said.
But these clips also show accidents do happen. Imagine being a passenger on one bus, shown making a left turn. The operator appears to misjudge the speed of an oncoming car. One minute the bus is turning, the next it is being hit. The sound of screeching tires is heard, people screaming, one woman yells, "Oh my god!"
Despite this, Metro statistics show only two people per million passengers are hurt on buses. In some cases, the video can be used to teach better driving habits.
