The unemployment rate didn't drop because we're suddenly creating new jobs.

The market expected 120,000 new jobs and the rate to stay at 9%.

The report says we created 120,000 new jobs and the rate dropped to 8.6%. This means that .4% difference was a result of people giving up and not looking.

That's not good.

Eric you should credit the occupy people too. By that I mean neither one did anything to help the economy.

The Labor Department dropped 315,000 people from the workforce (roughly the population of Pittsburgh) as those considered giving up looking for employment.They do this by using the highly scientific method known as "the household survey". The household survey consists of simply picking up the phone and calling someone to ask if they are #1, employed and if not have they actively sought work in the previous month or whatever. Supposedly they figure 315,000 folks say they have given up in the last month.

Other than that hiring stemmed mostly from seasonal retailers and Temps.

Knowing the facts can really take the shine off misleading headlines. Unless Obama can continue to buy their support through unemployment benefit extensions, now longer than 2 years, do you really think these people are going to support him in 2012?

Massaging numbers and knee jerk reactions to insignificant and fabricated statistics might move the market a bit but that's about all. If election time rolls around and real unemployment is still 15%+ it won't matter if the Labor Dept says unemployment is 0, reelection ain't gonna happen cap'ain.

Hate to piss on your parade but remember the labor departments initial number for 3rd quarter growth and all the buzz it generated back in October?

Isn't it amazing how little news was generated Wednesday when 3rd quarter GDP was revised down from 3.1% to 2.3%, (only about a 30% rate of error)

And I'll tell you this.... The real growth rate is around 1.5 so when their next 3rd quarter revision comes out it will be below 2.0%.

Over half are Christmas and hamburger flipping jobs. What a recovery!
