Upon their son's death, Rick and Karen Santorum opted not to bring his body to a funeral home. Instead, they bundled him in a blanket and drove him to Karen's parents' home in Pittsburgh. There, they spent several hours kissing and cuddling Gabriel with his three siblings, ages 6, 4 and 1 1/2. They took photos, sang lullabies in his ear and held a private Mass.

"That's my little guy," Santorum says, pointing to the photo of Gabriel, in which his tiny physique is framed by his father's hand.

Rick Sandtorum and his wife taking their "baby" who had died home for the children to see was the least traumatic way of dealing with this situation. Those children had already grown to love and look forward to their little brother coming home. He afforded them the opportunity to meet and say goodbye to him just as we do when someone we love passes away. There was also an opportunity for the parents to spend a few hours with the baby they had waited for with joy to be released after physically loving and holding it.

I thought it was fucked up when John Edwards told John Kerry that he climbed into the casket with his dead son to hug him after his viewing. I think the Santorum story is just as fucked up. People may grieve in their own way, but if it's a private family matter, keep it that way. Don't go blabbing it to everyone to score some sort of weird brownie points.
