The best Windows software.
Posted by: Gravis ()
Date: February 02, 2008 05:05PM

ok, i have to be on Windows all the time for work and at my previous place of employment so being unsatisfied with Windows, i've collected a few utility programs (most are a single file and dont require intallers of any sort) that i have found to be fantastic. so i thought i would share and i encourage others to post their own favorites.

a lot of mine are listed on http://www.tinyapps.org (a sweet site for utilities!). there may be other apps there you like.

Quote
Power Menu - a must!
it lets you do great things like minimize ANY window to the system tray and set any particular window to stay on top of other windows (very nifty!).

Quote
Resize Enable
is that text entry window too small? NO LONGER! resize any window!

Quote
Cool Player
it's a small mp3 player that really only makes my list because it can also play streaming mp3 music.

Quote
GNU utilities for Win32 - for linux command line users
if you are a linux guy who likes the linux shell more than Windows' command line, this is for you! it has all the nice basics stuff like sh, ls, grep and wget. note: you will need to append the location of the exes to PATH environment variable.

Quote
WinSCP - not for everyone
it's a gui based scp program. SCP is a program that will let you transfer files over an ssh connection. if you dont know what ssh is, it's not for you.

Quote
Putty - again, not for eveyone
Putty is quite possibly the best windows net tool there is. it does everything including ssh (my main use) to ssh port forwarding to X11 forwarding.

Quote
OpenSSH for Windows - one more, not for everyone
as the name makes obvious, it's port of OpenSSH for Windows. the nice thing is you can run an SSH server so you can access your files anywhere using an SCP client (e.g. WinSCP) or a SFTP client (e.g. Putty).

Quote
Firefox - the best web browser i know
many of you already know about this one but if you dont, give Firefox a try, it's more secure and faster then Internet Explorer. There is no long a reason to be afraid you could get infected by a website!

Quote
Pixel Image Editor
this one cost money but not too much. it's $44 for an image editor that i think is even better than photoshop. it's also for linux and mac OSX!

Quote
Web based EFNet Client
while not technically a program, if you are behind a firewall that blocks the common IRC ports, this web page is for you. now, if you want to access another network *cough*DALNet*cough*, you are a loser anyway so it doesnt matter

oh yeah, i almost forgot, enjoy these and list your favorites!

it's possible you have bad RAM. aside from that, you may have conflicting hardware if changed something or just bad drivers.

i recommend running the RAM checker that comes with Ultimate Boot CD. this download link is quite fast, compliements of the University of Crete: ftp://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/ubcd/ubcd411.iso
after you burn the CD (you will need to use Nero or something because it's an ISO file) put it in your drive and reboot. it should automatically run as it's a boot cd, hence the name.

tell me how it works out.

The fan is fine. The Laptop doesn't overheat. It could be a software problem but then it's in the software that dell installed. I've heard of the DVD program doing this but over all everyone agrees it's dell's fault. And the best part is dell denies it so you are stuck with it. Don't buy a dell again.

so you already did the RAM check eh? ok, i would recommend updating all you drivers. you will need to go to the makers' pages to get the latest ones. you dont by chance have an ATI video card in it, do you?

PowerMenu ROCKS!

Here is my favorite: PerfectDisk http://www.perfectdisk.com/products/downloadit/pd_download_home.cfm <-- demo

It's the fastest hard drive defragmenter out there. You wouldn't believe how much faster Vista goes now. The Pro version is only $40 and worth every penny!

Gravis,

I have a question. I am using a laptop and I thought i had all that Word stuff. However, it has expired. So if I want to use Word and say write a paper, how can I do it on my laptop. Should I buy a word program?

I took a class a few years back and they gave me a disk to use Office Works. But you need a code. They said it was written on the box the disc came in. I typed that code in but the message said it was wrong. Now what>>>>> You are smart and nice so I asked you.

Thank you for your time, Gravis. I love your pictures especially the ones with kitties. You are the kindest person here, I think. Meeper is too.

Hugs to my smart friends!!!!!!!

Hi Tricki,

Gravis is a linux guy, I think his response to a microsoft question is gonna be quite amusing.

It's weird that your copy of Word would expire... was it an evaluation copy? If it's something you use alot, you can buy your own copy that will never expire. Keep in mind that this will cost you upwards of 150 bucks. While I'd never recommend to you the unscrupulous practice of software pirating, I can say from experience that going out of your way to befriend and gain the trust of your IT Dept. can be very helpful (hint hint)...

If those aren't options for you, I've heard decent things about the free Google word processor if you just need something with basic features. I'm sure it's gotta have its limitations though.

If you're still a teacher, or have connections with the school system, you can buy the student version of MS Office at a deep discount.

yes, he beat me to it. i got sick of having to pirate ms office for various family members so i installed Open Office for them. Writer is just about the same as MS Word 2003. trust me when i say, you do NOT want office 2007. you can get Open Office here: http://www.openoffice.org/

here are some screenshots of Writer: http://www.openoffice.org/screenshots/ooo20/writer/index.html

Yes, OpenOffice is another great solution. Just go to http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.1/index.html and click the green bar to download. This suite does the majority of MS Office functions, and the price is right...

Gravis,

Thank you for recommending Firefox. I love the picture of the baby fox curled around the globe. It's the cutest!!!!!! Plus it alphabetized my bookmarks. Why do people need different browsers anyway? Do any others have cute pictured?

BTW, today is my birthday!! I wore my tiara at the gym today when I worked out then I ran 4 miles and it stayed on the whole time. I ordered it off Ebay so it's a real beauty queen tiara. I bet some dumb beauty queen auctioned it off after wh got in trouble like so many of them do. I can dead lift 105 lbs. now!!!!

Thanks,
Trickie

I got sick of not having an XKill equivalent for windows... so i wrote one. it's almost identical. it doesnt ask the program nicely to exit but just gives strait up kills it. i figured someone might like it so im posting it.

Quote
Instructions
  • run win32kill.exe
  • cursor will change to an X shape
  • click on program you want to terminate
  • win32kill exits
note: if you right click or press escape the win32kill will exit without terminating any programs.

i recommend you copy it into your "Quick Launch Bar"
Quote
a quick way to do that
  • extract the contents (win32kill.exe) to your desktop
  • pressing Windows Key + r
  • paste in this: cmd /C move "%HOMEPATH%\Desktop\win32kill.exe" "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Intern~1\QuickL~1"
  • press enter

the best part is that it's only 5.5 KB :D

note: if you want the source, just send me a PM and i'll send you a copy.

Trickie isnt a real person., She is a character made up for the amusement of all. You'll notice in her posts she is either as Cutesie as legally blonde, as wordly as abe lincoln and she seems to know everything about anything and to have gone everywhere and have knowledge the average person Doesnt. Ie the robbery at PJ skidooos or Patrick Swayze just HAPPENS to have vacationed at the same time same hotel etc etc blah blah. Trickie is as trickie does.

I have been in that room several times. There are about 6 closed circuit TV's in there and most of the time, someone ( usually the owner's relatives) are monitoring the TVs. I cannot imagine how this happened because that door is usually always locked and someone is usually in that office. I think it may have been an inside job or something"
