This is the new start screen for Windows 8, and Microsoft says it is an improvement over a start button.

They need to go back to doing what made them a success in the first place...wait for Apple to do something innovative, rip it off and then pretend that they came up with it on their own.

It's nice. I can't wait for it to come out - paired with a new Intel processor, people will finally have a system that can "truly" hibernate with an 8 sec. boot up time.

It IS meant for touch screen and designed for non-techs such as eesh.

Yeah, it is meant for touch screens but it is also being released for desktop computers and laptops that don't have touch-screen capability in order to give them a more mobile interface kind of look. which is pretty sound reasoning...for microsoft.

The issue is that many, many corporations and government agencies have large and long-term agreements with Microsoft. Due to this, many of us are stuck using their products in our work environments. Hopefully, the corporate world will see Windows 8 as a "non-event" and stay with Windows 7 and Office 2010. It has plenty of capabilities right now as it is - many of which go unused by many clients and users.

It's many of the applications themselves that have to be revamped to work with tablets and mobile devices. That is where corporations and government agencies should be spending their money at this point in time. Not more of the "Same old, Same old" from Microsoft.

Though, I do like how one can customize their desktop with their name and image on it - just like the example of eesh above. That kind of integration shows "ownership".

it will also boot to non-metro UI for enterprise users. in other words, don't worry too much. I'm waiting for the win 8 tabs to kill off apple for business use. give it a couple years.

Must be why there is such an outcry among the tech community over this layout. Since you are clearly a technological juggernaut, you can explain the wisdom behind using a touchscreen layout on a desktop, which is what Microsoft is planning.

Sounds like Vista all over again. I don't understand the need to constantly tweak the user interface. Office 2007 introduced ribbons. What a pain in the ass.

Even Ubuntu has some new launcher in version 11 which is just awful.

Either Vista or Windows ME. Both = bad. And, the ribbons? Don't get me started. They've propagated the ribbon theme through all of their applications, not just the common Office and Outlook software.

With Ubuntu 11, I quickly put on the Macbuntu interface as I wasn't too happy with what they had done. And, staying with vers. 10 only allows about another 1.5 years of support before it dries up.

Oh, the fun of trying to stay current with the trends.

they are not planning that. there will be 2 options with win 8. the dev release was a teaser and is not expected to be the final iteration. the metro UI will be an option kinda like aero but Is by no means what entetprise users will be expected to use. it's meant to get developers excited about the new possibilities of the metro UI.

Read the CNET article, because based on your post, you clearly haven't.

If you cannot see the added benefit of having touch screen capabilities in the corp. or personal computing environment then continue to hide your head in the sand and say over and over to yourself

I want things to stay the same, I'm used to things the way they are, I don't want to have to change the way I do things, I can't learn new ways to be productive

You probably thought the same thing when the mouse was introduced and continued to peck away at the keyboard to tell the PC what to do.

It's an enhancement to the Windows operating system. You will have the ability to close metro apps if you wish to.

And thanks for the compliment.

Touchscreen, lol. What a gimmick.

Mouse was already out when I was born. Sorry you're so old.

Because the ability to close metro apps is the greatest advancement in computing since the creation of the first microprocessor.

As were abortions. I guess you should consider yourself lucky that your mother didn't have you aborted.
