State or Not: Palestine

In this NYT article, Sarkozy's speech at the UN warns of the repercussions of a US Veto in the Security Council-

I say state, or at least for UN observation status, something that I thought they already had.

Lets move Palestine up a notch, after all these years, they deserve to observe!

France Breaks With Obama on Palestinian Statehood Issue:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/22/world/middleeast/france-breaks-with-obama-on-palestinian-statehood-issue.html?_r=1&ref=global-home

If the Palestinian effort at membership faces a Security Council veto, the deadly reverberations will be felt across the Arab world, Mr. Sarkozy warned.

"Each of us knows that Palestine cannot immediately obtain full and complete recognition of the status of United Nations member state," he said. "But who could doubt that a veto at the Security Council risks engendering a cycle of violence in the Middle East?"

The Palestinians currently have the status of an observer “entity” in the United Nations.

"Why not envisage offering Palestine the status of United Nations observer state?” said the French leader. “This would be an important step forward. Most important, it would mean emerging from a state of immobility that favors only the extremists.”

Recognition as an observer state would not mean much here except for some procedural changes, but it would allow the Palestinians to join subsidiary bodies and treaties of the United Nations.

Most Israeli concern has focused on the possibility that making the Palestinians an observer state could enhance their ability to join the International Criminal Court and pursue Israeli leaders through “lawfare.”

Palestine was born out of anti-Semitic terrorism. They do not deserve to be considered a state or any other legal entity.

Move Israel to Florida with the rest of my Jews and we'll be fine.

Swamp rednecks, Jews, and Haitian and Cuban refugees living in close proximity is not a good idea.

The only problem I have with recognizing Palestine as a state is trying to figure out where the government of Palestine is. They're supposedly stable enough now to have a representative government but I'm not seeing it.

I think they have as much "right" to a state as random Europeans did back in...1948?

From what I've seen in Florida, it can't get any worse.

When a person says "anti-Semite," it refers to a hatred of Jewish people. The last time I checked, Palestinians weren't Jewish.

Get your stupidity in check.

Yes, that's the broad definition of Semite.

Let's use your same reference to look up anti-Semite.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/anti+semite

Note the primary definition, regardless of your own ignorant hatred towards Israel.

That's really just new-age vocab. Semitism has been associated exclusively with the Jewish population....wrongfully so. A lot of people don't understand that Semitism is just really a language group which encompasses many different ethnic groups...Arabs, Jewish people, Amharic-speaking Ethiopians...etc. While I understand that the phrase "Antisemitism" has come to refer to hate against Jews, you have to admit that's pretty silly. They need to come up with a better phrase for it.

Besides, the Palestinians were kicked out of their homeland just a few decades ago. I don't think that bitterness and anger is because of "Antisemitism". If I had to say which of the states was born from terrorism it would be Israel. You've got it backwards eesh.

You either support Israel, or you support Palestine, there is no middle ground. Judging from your rapid defense of Palestine, I'd say you don't have a liking towards Israel.

Not saying they're the most peaceful people. Not saying it's justified. But I'm not going to scratch my head and pretend to wonder why they run around with guns and blow things up either. But there were actions that precipitated all this. If I were to flood the streets *insert safest, friendliest, and cleanest city in VA* with drugs, you can bet that in a few years the aforementioned city would be an absolutely horrible and violent place to live...irrespective of how nice the people used to be. A horrible analogy really. But what I'm trying to say is just...a chain reaction.

In any case, the Palestinian population are not really in a position to do much. Hamas is really the only other major faction in this conflict and they are nowhere NEAR as big/powerful/deadly as the media would make it seem.

SHit head, you have it reversed. Israel was formed out of anti-Semetic terrorism (genocide). Rather then solving their own problems European naions dumped their unwanted Jews into palestine. The only reason palestine wasnt a formal nation at the time is because they have no oil. If they had, the European powers would have carved a nation out of the desert, put puppets into power and signed oil drilling treaties with the new nation. Then there is no way they would have allowed to populate their oil fields.
