Speeding ticket in NC..will Insurance in VA find out?
Posted by: Quick Question ()

I got a speeding ticket on I-95 going 19 mph over in central NC. I didn't fight the ticket because I didn't want to drive all the way down there for a $175 fine. Will my insurance likely find out about this?

Yes, the ticket will go on your Virginia record, but strictly speaking, your insurance won't know about it until or unless they request your driving record from the DMV. The DMV does not push this info. out to your ins. co. They have to come get it.

Unless you already have a bunch of points on your record, one ticket for 19 over probably won't impact your insurance rates IF they actually pull your DMV history. I memory serves me correctly, allstate generally doesn't increase premiums for 1-2 "minor" violations. My wife had two speeding tickets in VA (15 & 19 over) and allstate didn't bat an eye. Of course when she had her first accident in 10yrs they immediately jacked our premium like $500/yr.

I have State Farm and am a 23 y/o male so my rates are already pricey but have never been in an accident or received a ticket prior to this.

Check you most recent policy statement - not the bill, but the actual policy statement that goes thru your levels of coverage. They typically have some numeric rating code and a lookup table that tells you how you are rated. On allstate's there's a code for "minor" and "major" violations. I believe minor includes lower point moving violations and major would be DUI, reckless, racing, etc. I used to have geico and they definately hosed you when you had ANY ticket, but allstate seemed more reasonable.

Next time hire a lawyer there. Costs the same amount, you never have to go there and the charge gets reduced to improper equipment or some other bogus nonsense. Worked for me.

Stop paying the bankers and self-insure as an uninsured motorist for $500/yr.

A number of years ago, I got a ticket in Riley county, KS (not reckless or anything interesting). AllState ran an Equifax report the next year that listed the ticket as a pair of tickets in June and July (wrong date for both).

I switched to State Farm, who didn't seem to have a problem with one ticket. I was 23 at the time and owned a boring car.

As far as I can tell, Virginia was not involved in the reporting.

So yes, but it's not a problem as long as you don't do it again.
