You are referring to theocracies. The American government isn't a Christian theocracy, but that doesn't mean attempts haven't been made to turn it into one...

...And if you know history at all, you'll know that the Protestant and Catholic churches and their influence on government had a lot to do with the wars and misery in Europe during the middle ages and the subsequent founding of this country.
