China Beach started out good, but then tried to be a TV version of Apocalypse Now and fell apart.

Altman had "learned his chops" for almost a decade prior to Combat. Combat was the top TV directing gig given the production costs associated with it at the time. ABC had no interest in hiring a novice to direct that series. Ted Post directed a few episodes.

I don't know if you'd call it a military series per se, but the two main characters were military dudes, and there was a fair bit of military stuff in it. I think HBO's Rome is probably the best TV series I've ever seen, military or otherwise. Too bad the set caught fire and they cut it from 5 seasons to two.

My old time favorite was The Gray Ghost, a series about John Singleton Mosby. (I'm getting old) Southerners were actually good guys.

Band of Brothers was pretty good, it had the same type of filter as Saving Private Ryan. I know it was a stupid movie, but the battle scenes were excellent.

I loved M*A*S*H*. also, but get the feeling that it really does not compare to a "Band of Brothers" series in the realm of "Military" --- also, I am not sure if a sitcom counts...

I must bow out of this discussion now.

How can you have a Man Card when you're a 14-year-old girl?

First, I do not think your comment was necessary as I have never said a crossed word to you ---- but this IS FFXU, so maybe it was in fun?

Not that it matters much, but I doubt any 14 year old girl would be familiar with M*A*S*H*.

Not even a bridge to burn' has been built yet...unfortunate.

Hawkeye was an over sensitive whinner, The COs were both weaklings, Klinger and the bald Major were faggots. Hotlips was a whore. MASH suited the 70s but would never fly on TV today, really outdated and too much feelings, too sugar and sweet. And the clerk, Radar, was unsound and infantile with alot of mental problems, and unsure of his sexual identity. Fucking North Koreans if they ever watched the series must of thought if that was the reality, they deserved to get shot at.

MASH became too preachy in its later years. The movie and the early years were good, but the show became too slanted with antiwar sentiments. The worst episode may have been that one with the North Korean captive who went around treating patients in the OR. It was hard to tell whether they went over the top unknowingly in that episode.

Agree on MASH; it got too lefty/looney towards the end. The scripts and acting declined as well. I was surprised it hung around as long as it did.

As a kid, I liked Rat Patrol, and Garrison's Guerillas. The latter is very obscure, but it sticks with me as a touchstone to this day.

I remember the guy who wrote the book that the movie and series were based on loved the movie but hated the TV series. He said something to the effect that "we knew who the enemy was."

MASH was phoney, take Corporal Klinger, in real life he would have gotten a fatal "blanket party" by the other enlisted guys, they would'nt tolerate that shit. Also, the character played by Alan Alda, he was too soft to be a real Mobile Field Surgeon, those guy's were tougher than the fighting GIs, maybe initially they were soft like Alda, but they soon hardened up. The guys who fought in Korea and the doctors had a tough lot, in many cases, it was alot worst then Vietnam. MASH does to he Korean conflict what Hogan's Heros does to WW2.

Spot on. I was fairly fresh out of Nam when the tv series premiered
and I thought it was a crock of shit from the beginning. My uncle
who was a Korean War vet refused to watch it after the first episode
because he thought it was stupid. The thing that bothered me most
was that there were people who actually thought Army life was
just like the tv show. Loretta Swit has/had nice boobs though.

Picture some GI who saw his pal's guts leaking out through a massive gut wound die. He then gets Medivaced for wound to a Mobile Field Hosp. Then he sees a guy like Klinger, safe and toasty, behind the lines trying to pull a section 8, nut job. That guy would bayonet Klinger or at least frag him.. I would have.

In terms of M*A*S*H*, regardless of your take on the actual show - the LYRICS to the intro are quite haunting.

What strikes me, and maybe some others my age, is that I had always identified the M*A*S*H* theme song as a happy and familiar sound / song, because it reminded me of my father watching TV downstairs - just a childhood memory that is comforting I guess.

But, once I heard and read the lyrics to "Suicide is Painless" - it has become a weird omen of sorts.

Specially a Surgeon, A surgeon's personality is very close to a personality of a fighter pilot, Navy SEAL, that type. Those MASH doctors were a bunch of undisciplined Hippies.

The show was a parody of the military. It got really stupid when every Chinese and North Korean was portrayed as heroic juxtaposed against their spoof of the military personalities (overzealous, bumbling, corrupt wheeler-deeler types in supply mgmt, and so on). In the end, it became more of a chick show than a military comedy. They depended on relationship dramas as their story line since Hot Lips and Winchester were no longer antagonists.

I'm sure the Chinese and North Korean troops were a barrel of laughs at Chosin.

I was trying to think at what point MASH "jumped the shark", I though maybe when the pompous Winchester was introduced, but it continued for quite a bit after that. However, MASH, like any other long running show, went dry, the story lines were all milked out, not to change the subject, but I'm surprised the "Simpsons" are still around. I stopped watching it after Frank Burns left, he was good in that role.
