I hate Rolling Stone and disagree with their top ten, but some of the stories behind these are cool:

I always liked the cover art for Black Sabbath's first album. Nice and creepy as it should be.

Beatle's Sergeant Pepper was great because it was a" picture worth a thousand words". It depicted the end of an era and the beginning of a new one in music history. Who ever composed that cover was a true artist.

I always thought Built To Spill's "Ultimate Alternative Wavers" album cover was great.

Why spend budget on artwork when you can walk into JC Penny's in Boise, ID and get your pic taken for 15 bucks? One of my favorite covers of all time.

Anything by Hipgnosis, who were a design group in England or Roger Dean, who did most Yes covers as well as some work for Budgie and Uriah Heep.

Hipgnosis did Wish You Were Here, Dark Side and Animals, as well as Houses of the Holy, Presence and IN Through thre Out Door by Zep.I think they did this Scorpions one too, but don't hold me to that.

I've always liked this old Sabbath import cover too, all kinds of gruesome shit if you can look closely enough. I knew the name of the painting at one time, but I've forgotten it. From the 1600's I believe.

I remember the cover of Ritual de lo Habitual eventually got censored by the record companies. Jane's Addiction then released the album with a white cover with the text of the 1st Amendment on it.

Their "Nothing's Shocking" record also had a cool cover.

I never liked Roxy Music, but there was a really sexy older girl in my neighborhood who though they were the the best f'ing thing ever.

Always thought this was a hot album cover, used to gaze at it while de-seeding Columbian on Zofo or Frampton Comes Alive.

Ween's "Chocolate and Cheese" was picked as Playboy's "Sexiest Album Cover of All Time" about ten years ago (that Roxy Music one was ranked pretty high too). When Ween heard they won, their only comment was some complaint about how they never even got to meet the chick who posed for the cover.

Ha, I was thinking of the cover for Fu Manchu's "King of the Road" album earlier.

Another one I always thought was cool was the Minutemen's "Double Nickels on the Dime". I always knew it was mocking that stupid Sammy Hagar song, but for years I didn't realize that in the photo, the speedometer was on 55 as they were driving on the 10 in LA (hence, the album title). I always thought that was kinda clever.

I always loved Iron Maiden's "Somewhere in Time" cover because it incorporated (especially when fully extended) a lot of other pre-Somewhere In Time items like Acacia Avenue, an Icarus falling from the sky, Long Beach Arena (Live After Death), Aces High, etc. Even Hammerjacks gets a mention. I don't know if it was the Hammerjacks in Baltimore or somewhere else. It's a really "busy" album cover.

But Live After Death has to be their best. It's iconic.
