The Beatles in DC
Posted by: 123414 ()

I was just talking to my mother about Beatlemania , she said she was a bit young for it all but her older sister happened to see the Beatles in 1964 in DC, their first US show. Just wondering if any of you older posters, or maybe your parents have any stories about the Beatles. It's really fascinating, to me. Any stories?

it's pretty cool to watch stuff like this now, even the way the audience is dressed is so different and kind of hard to fathom (coming from someone born in 1990)

i had a friend who's mother waited around at their hotel, and impersonated hotel staff and got into one of their rooms, if i remember correctly. pretty badass, albeit creepy.

My mom saw them in concert and it may have been this one. She said the the crowd was so loud that you could barely hear the music.

That was the old DC Colliseum (Uline Arena), and yes it was their first US concert.

There are many stories behind it. Google "Carrol James," "WWDC" and "Beatles" to learn more.

The place is still standing but has been abandoned for decades.

When the Beatles came to Cincinnati in 1964 I was 16 years old and a friend
ordered the tickets and we'd planned to meet her in the Cincinnati Gardens
parking lot before going in. There were three carloads of us teenagers
from Dayton and we had a 50 mile drive ahead of us. We wound up sitting
in a traffic jam on I-75 and never got any closer than Morrow, Ohio.
We listened on the radio in shock and horror. The next day we found out
that our friend with the tickets wasn't able to get within five miles of
the concert. We hadn't paid our friend for the tickets and she decided
to keep them and eat the cost herself. ($6.00 each) I saw her at a high
school reunion 20 years later and asked what had happened to the tickets
and she told me she'd sold them for a small fortune as collectors items.
She refused to tell me how much but I'll bet it was quite a bit.

elvis was about 300lbs when he died. His girlfriend found him stiff on the shitter. He used to make a sandwich called Elvis special, consisted of peanut butter with bacon and snickers bar with banana all in a sesame seed bun. He would eat about 3 of these at a sitting.

I remember there being a spread in Life magazine about them in DC back in the day. I think it was the edition with them all in a swimming pool. Maybe you can get a copy.

Yeah, but Elvis just had more charisma, and he was just one guy, the beatles were just another band. Elvis was a great performer and he came before the beatles. if it werent the Elvis, the beatles never would have had a chance.

Elvis could act also, he was good in movies. The Beatles were like silly b astards. Running around like fools, John Lennon was the only masculine member of that group, the rest were like weiners.

Ummmm, the true story. Elvis was on the shitter. Got up for some reason and passed out (heart attack) and went down. Pants still around ankle. On the way down he hit his head on the sink and his head the ground. One of theses caused his jaw to lock. Then he vomitted.

He was found by a member of the memphis mafia gurgling on his own vomit. Quickly thinking, the MM member ran and got a hammer and knocked out Elvis's two front teeth. This brave and heroic (and gross/funny) action was sadly not enough to save the King.

My dad said "Elvis was a true success story from the south. He was born a poor country hick and dies a rich country hick"

Elvis was a success story is true, but the reason for his success was his talent. I remember my Dad hating Elvis, then hearing him perform a song on the radio, not knowing it was Elvis saying "Wow, that singer has a great voice". Surprised when I told him it was Elvis. Elvis could appeal to anyone, the Beatles were selective to a distinct taste in Music.
