Huckabee Bails Out of President Race Against Obama

smart, Huckabee bailed before it turned into political suicide.

http://www.businessinsider.com/what-huckabees-exit-means-2011-5

In the case of Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor who was his party's clear favorite to win the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, it probably means what he says it means: his heart wasn't in it.

The litany of reasons why someone like Huckabee would not run for president is oft-repeated: you have to beg for money all the time, the press is actively trying to destroy you, the trail is hard and lonely, the prospects of ultimate success are uncertain at best. If you're going to do it, you have to totally commit to it. Anything less is a betrayal of all the people who support you.

At this point the only candidate that would seem to have an upper hand if he jumped in is Chris Christie.

You get the feeling the GOP is clearing the deck for something. Like a big name is going to jump in. Personally, I think the only one besides Christie would be Petraeus, if he retires and the GOP could get him to do it.

It is not clear he would be a Republican candidate.

In any case, if the Republicans are going to have a reasonable showng (they won't win but at least have a reasonable showing...) they better get their hidden candidate exposed soon!

I'm not surprised. The little bit of daylight that his financial dealings were exposed to showed he is a dirtball. Can't imagine how much other shit would come out if he actually ran.

I don't think Obama has it as wrapped up as many think. There are a lot of independents who feel that he has let them down. He can't run on hope and change again. He has a record now and apart from getting Osama, it isn't the best thing. I think plenty in his own party are disappointed in how he has handled things and not come through on what he promised.

That being said, if the Repubs don't come up with a good candidate, he may slide back in, but not by much. It may be a case of whoever can turn out the most voters because many people might just stay home figuring both options suck.

I don't know if Obama has anything wrapped up. But the GOP sure the hell is acting like he does.

I think Obama is benefiting from the fact that there are no good options on the table for the economy. Anything the GOP proposes can get quickly knocked down because, quite frankly, they suck.

I think Obama's plan is to laud what he can from his record and let the GOP candidates bash themselves on the rocks with their bad proposals. Then, if he gets re-elected, hopefully Obama can use his first two years tackling entitlements and getting some of this shit fixed.

Well, I think you'll be surprised by the landslide I sincerely believe is coming. Unless Obama's crew really blow it, all they have to do its point out a few of their successes - in particular the economy - and let the Republicans hoist themselves on their own petards by spewing the same old nonconstructive hate they've been spewing for a decade.

The GOP is god awful, but the democrats really aren't that much better. The dems had a two year window to work through some good stuff on the 'hope and change' platform and as Village Idiot wrote - a lot of independents will not vote for him because his record is pretty clear Obama and the dems were basically Bush-lite.

The republicans call Obama a socialist and have now moved even that much more to the right of Obama's centrist/right agenda. Both options are very poor choices and I have to agree with Village Idiot's assessment that many people may just stay home.

I think the fact that he is black will prevent any kind of landslide, even though he may still win. Sorry, but the fact he didn't get a bigger bump out of the Osama thing leads me to believe there are a lot of racists out there who won't support Obama no matter what he does.

Of course, that must be it! Racists!

It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that he's accomplished exactly fuck-all aside from getting UBL, could it?

Nah... must be the racists!

Jimmy Carter, who was a horrific President, saw his ratings jump to nearly 60 percent after chiding the Soviets over Afghanistan...

800px-Gallup_Poll-Approval_Rating-Jimmy_

...Yes, it is racism. I've never been one to play the race card, but I think there is indisputable evidence (from unsubstantiated nonsense about Obama being a Muslim born in Kenya) that a certain percentage of America is simply hard-core racist at heart.

I don't think the GOP is clearing the way for a better candidate. I think anybody with half a brain knows Obama is at a 63% approval rating and they can't beat him.

Mind if I ask where you got that number?

Gallup says he's at 46% today.

I'm glad the HUck is not running, he would have been a big primary distraction.

The GOP is not going to find it's key to victory with a Bible thumper or someone from the Bachman or Palin cloth. Nominee will be a Northerner and a social moderate with an emphasis on reform, austerity and responsibility. Romney,Pawlenty,Daniels all fit that bill.

They all suck as all politicos do, but they will in no way reach the level of overspending and overreaching financial disaster as Barry Obama has.

The liberal media and the dullards who parrot their schtick are all crowing about how there are no good GOP candidates. Anyone of these men would probably be far better leaders and far more responsible than Obuma.

I heard recently that even Bill Clinton didn't enter the 1992 prez race until November 1991.

Time is still on the GOP's side. Obama can only kill Osama once, and I am very doubtful that 2011 will be the "Summer of Recovery" as 2010 was supposed to be.

The GOP has made an ass out of itself the last four years. Best to not be associated with it right now.

You realize you are saying that those that voted for him the first time and possibly wont vote for him this time around.............are racists?

You're right about racism being alive and well in this country. But it's not coming from where you claim it is.

Forget if you can that he's black..............and then point out ANY good reason why he was elected.

What did he bring to the table? From where I sit "he wasn't Bush" is the thickest part of his resume.

Republicans are kings at shooting themselves in the foot on a national level. They mistook last November as a vote for them rather than the true meaning which was to give Democrats the boot. Same as it was for Republicans two years before. Both parties take the public for granted.

Neither party is getting the hint. Its the economy stupid.

No. Those people are voting against him because he isn't liberal enough. The fact is if he were a true liberal, he would be unelectable. Anyone would be.

The racism isn't from liberals. It is from conservatives and some libertarians who claim not to care about such things.

No. He wasn't Hillary. That's how he got the nomination.

No. He didn't run against Bush. Frankly, McCain made two huge miscalculations. The first was telling Americans that they were full of shit about the economy being bad. Second was Palin. If McCain had picked Romney for his running mate (who he hated), he may have had a better chance of winning (and my knock on Romney isn't the general election. It's been his problems with the Republican base).

Seriously, why is Rand Paul so disturbed by the Civil Rights Act? Why did he pick that particular piece of legislation to criticize for an overreach of Federal powers. Surely there are others he could have used.
