Jobless Claims Surge
Posted by: mcsmack ()

"New claims for jobless benefits unexpectedly surged last week to their highest level since last summer, according to data giving another sign of the economy's struggle in creating jobs.

Separately, U.S. productivity slowed in the first quarter as the economic recovery stumbled and labor costs started to rise again.

Initial unemployment claims increased by 43,000 to a seasonally adjusted 474,000 in the week ended April 30, the Labor Department said Thursday in its weekly report.

The prior week's figure was revised to 431,000 from an originally reported 429,000.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had forecast claims would fall by 19,000 in the latest week. The level of 474,000 was the highest since the week ending Aug. 14, 2010."

One thing that has been consistent from the weekly BLS report on employment is their upward revisions week to week. For the last several months their upward revisions have been around 3 to 4 thousand for the previous weeks stat. This week their revised number was right on at 2thousand.

And listen to this quote from one of the Labor Depts. "experts".

"A Labor Department analyst attributed the surprising increase to one-time administrative factors, including additional layoffs in New York state due to spring break, which doubled the number of claims in the state. Other reasons cited were a new emergency benefit program in Oregon, and additional automobile industry claims.

"I don't think it's economic factors," the analyst said."

What an embarrassment.

We need to shut down the Labor Department, send these idiots home and bank the savings. They are worthless and useless when it comes to providing economic data.

As I have said in the past, there are several privately funded orgs. that do a much better job than these clowns do.

Like ISM and ADP.
"This week, a national employment report published by payroll giant Automatic Data Processing Inc. and consultancy Macroeconomic Advisers showed private-sector payrolls in April grew below expectations. And the Institute for Supply Management, a research group, indicated in its monthly report that payrolls within the U.S. services sector barely grew in April."

We can survive without the US Dept. of labor.

I still don't know what the media is talking about when they continually harp about the recovery. Around here and a couple major metropolitan areas we're fairly insulated from the US at large but for 95% of America they are barely holding on.

The "official" poverty rate is so absurdly low and yet 14% of Americans meet the criteria. Another 28% of America clings to numbers just above official poverty guidelines - nearly half of America is barely making it.

Couple that with the ability to work for meaningful wages - sure they are jobs out there - McDonald's recently went on a blitz to hire 50,000 workers. But if you're working two full time McDonald's like jobs you're barely clearing poverty - that's at 80 hours a week. There are jobs that pay well but the education/skill-set level is fairly high. You either have those skills or not, to retool and learn those skills costs tens of thousands of dollars which the vast majority of the unemployed simply do not have.

Where Obama went seriously wrong with this Depression was coupling the spending on banks with a massive investment in America. The US infrastructure needs a complete overhaul and revamping (roads, bridges, all the utilities). Our nuclear energy facilities are from pre-Carter era, they need to be upgraded and new ones built, we needed a massive government induced investment in clean/renewable sort of energies - none of these things took place on a meaningful level. This would have gone a long way as a win-win on many levels. Instead it fell by the wayside and America languishes.

As predicted by basic Keynesian economics. Now was not the time to reduce governemnt spending as forced upon us by noncompromising Republicans.

The U.S. economy added a stronger-than-expected 244,000 jobs in April, the Labor Department said Friday, as employers continued the solid pace of job creation seen in the prior two months.

Again, you'd be wise to be skeptical about BLS numbers. ADP (who actually run a huge payroll service for employers) is a much more accurate source. There data does show jobs creation not too far behind the BL numbers but nothing impressive in either.

Facts are with housing values still in a free fall, real unemployment hovering at 17%, a devalued dollar, huge inflation, 14.4 trillion in deficit spending, income is substantially lower with most of these new jobs. All these negatives far exceed the modest gains in professional and skilled labor gains over the last few months.

I mean really JR... 60,000 new jobs at McDonalds? That is what you liberals use to accuse Ronald Reagan of. Remember? All he did was create a nation of burger flippers? I remember.

62,000 of your 244,000 jobs are at McDonalds. What a recovery! Also what happened to the 250,000 to 500,000 jobs a month that Joe Biden promised would be created?

You are posting in a forum where housing is actually outperforming national trends by a ton. Prices are actually on the rise. Don't be suprised to see the morons here stupidly immune to the woes of the rest of the country. Life is good inside the bubble and they don't want to see or hear the woes of the rest of the country. If they actually left NoVA or even took the time to learn about what is going on in this country, they might be forced to question their blind loyalty to the O.

April’s job gains were widespread. Retailers, factories, financial companies, education and health care and even construction companies all added new workers. Federal, state and local governments cut jobs. The data suggest businesses are confident in the economy despite weak growth earlier this year. Payrolls growth increased sharply in February and March, marking the fastest two-month pace of job creation since before the recession began and heralding a decisive shift in the labor market.

I'm sure you are right in respects to some on the forum. Not all but some.

I do business all over North America including Canada and Puerto Rico. Cost of textiles, housing values nationwide, inflation, unemployment all either directly or indirectly have an effect on me being a developer. Also meeting payroll every 2 weeks and keeping numerous contractors busy is something most people will never have to worry about.

I'm sure if I had a nice little office job pushing pencils and paper on the tax payers dime, living inside "the bubble", I may have a different perspective.

Oh and one of the reasons our company has seen growth in the last two years is exactly because people are losing and giving up their homes. This year alone over 4 million. That's a horrible reason to like crappy economic policy.

Yeah, Bush was really hurting when his approval ratings were in the 70s and 80s. I take it you did NOT stay at a holiday Inn Express last night.

You may want to look at the historical numbers. He was hitting the 70s into '03.

You are not very smart. Everybody knows his poll numbers were high, but I wasn't even talking about poll numbers, not sure why you went there, maybe drugs or poor reading skills (I will pray for you). Since we are now here, Obama is experience a run of GOOD news, while Bush never experience that kind of run.

I am no Bush fan, but it is apparent you only saw what you wanted to. The stock market and housing market soared under Bush before the collapse. He had the Saddam capture. Not to mention, he was re-elected.

Keep your prayers to yourself.

One good week hardly offsets 100+ weeks of disappointment.

As far as the "why you went there" comment, why did you feel the need to bring Bush into the discussion in the first place?

Bush's numbers were nothing but a giant slip n slide after 9/11:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gallup_Poll-Approval_Rating-George_W_Bush.png

Obama numbers were sliding, now up, and who knows where else, most likely back down. If you look at it his numbers look alot like Reagans.

Reagan presidency was/is a lot of hype; best as I remember a ton of people thought we was a failure in his first years. Once his reelection came did people think he was any good.

Read this mid-term report on Reagan, it is intresting looking back:

Reagan was nothing more then a B rated movie actor who knoew how to read a line. His political views swayed depending on the wind and were based on what he could benifit most from. He set this country on the wrong projectory on so many key issues. I am confident history will not be kind to him except for his reported leadership qualities, in other words he could convince you to jump off a cliff.

Good point. Folks like JR only wish Bush were running in 2012. The thing is, he would beat Obama if that were to happen. Reagan would crush him. It is the same reason Obama will run against Bush again in 2012. Scare tactics won't work when people don't have jobs and have lost their homes but that is the only thing they will have to run on.

Also it is a leap to think that the electorate will forget about the whole "Obamacare" thing. And the "hey let's try KSM in Manhattan thing". And $5.00 per gallon gas, and 10% inflation. And 70% wrong track numbers in the polls.

One of his favorite phrases is "this is what change looks like".

After four years it will be damn hard to convince everyone that everything is in place for a great rebound so we don't need to change horses in mid stream. Especially with the numbers on our economy in an abyss. The BLS can massage data all they want but it won't change the reality on the ground where people live.

The man is in big trouble and he knows it. Campaign rhetoric will be the most negative in election history. As the polls go south again, not just the President but the Dems in general, look for opposition research to swing into full gear.

If you think you've seen dirty campaigns in the past, just wait.

A friend of mine is a manager at Giant. She says out of a hundred apps she might get three worth a shit. She said the majority come in the door telling her they will not work nights or weekends and no holidays.
When they do break down and hire them the newbies show up late or not at all and spend most the day fucking off.

Yeah I know Giant might not be a dream job but in my opinion if you dont take it and do a halfway decent job then you have no right to unemployment benefits. While I have no doubt the jobs picture isnt the best right now the potential employees dont help themselves much either.
