I was driving home from class last night on 66 towards Gainesville and some doucher in his Jeep Grand Cherokee was going 60mph in the left-most lane. The speed limit out that way is 65 so most people go 75. I didn't slow down at all because I expected him to see me coming up behind him and move out of the way. This asshole just stays right where he is and I end up having to slam on my brakes to avoid rear-ending him. I tail-gated the shit out of him for about 30 seconds until I got fed up, zoomed around him, and gave him the finger.

What makes people so damn oblivious to other cars on the road? Is he trying to self-police the other drivers by blocking them?

I don't understand how they are training people to drive these days. When I was growing up if someone flashed their lights behind you it was a polite request to move right so they can pass. When I do that to people aorund here they act first confused and then pissed off, as if I've insulted them or something.

I don't shoot the finger or gesture. I just pass them and avoid eye contact. If you like to look for trouble, sooner or later you will find it.

Why do so many people think this? The charge "passing on the right" refers to when you leave the pavement to pass a car. For example, if you are in a neighborhood on a 2-way street and someone has a left blinker on waiting to turn, and you go around them on the right to get around them when it's only one lane each way and you leave the pavement to do it or go on a shoulder, that's "passing on the right."

There is no law against passing another vehicle on a highway whether you are to the left or right of them as long as a legal lane exists. The convention is for slower traffic to move right (and some states have laws on that) so most passing is in fact done on the left, which is why slowpokes in the left lanes make travel more dangerous. People will pass to the right of vehicles, and when you create lane changes you create potential for harm.

This driver had no business in the passing lane. In fact, he had no business in any of the lanes because he was going under the speed limit. He could clearly see me coming up behind him at a much higher rate of speed (headlights), so he should have moved out of the way.

My brother lives in Gainesville, so I go out that way from time to time and it NEVER fails - the speed limit is 65 and there are a few ass clowns doing 60 and sometimes 50 fucking miles per hour between Manassas and Gainesville. Every. single. time.

It is generally expected for drivers to go AT LEAST the speed limit, which this guy wasn't. If people aren't going to keep up with the flow of traffic, they should stay in the right-most lane. Traveling under the speed limit in the passing lane is simply unacceptable and dangerous. It causes a disruption in the natural flow of traffic.

Regardless of whatever laws are out there, it is incredibly idiotic to drive under the speed limit in any lane other than the right-most lane. If you're going slower than other drivers, you need to move over to the right and not disrupt the flow of traffic. Screw all you young wippersnappers who think slow driving is some sort of crime. I drive my mint condition 1993 Grand Marquis at a steady 45mph on the parkway and the beltway. The state says that 45 is the minimum speed on these roads so fork you if you dont like it. I always run in the left lane and if I get tailgated I go slower.

I repeat the question. Link the law that says what the driver in the left hand lane was doing was illegal. Put another way, please cite the charge a police officer would write on the ticket if he or she saw that driver in the left-most lane. The original poster is the only one in the story who could have been charged with a violation by dangerously tailgating and communicating with rude hand gestures.

Driving slow in the left lane is also aggressive driving, IMO, if you are doing it just to piss off the people behind you.

Legal or not, it's just common courtesy to keep right unless passing on freeways.

It wasn't raining. I don't need to slow down at night because I have something called headlights. There were plenty of other drivers around us, and this self-righteous tool was creating a line of cars behind him.

Very Slow Driver...

A woman tells the story of her husband driving home, when he saw the flash of a traffic camera. He figured that his picture had been taken for exceeding the limit even though he knew that he was not speeding. Just to be sure, he went around the block and passed the same spot, driving even more slowly, but again the camera flashed. On the first part, the driver was NOT driving abreast of anyone else. We know that because you wrote "I tail-gated the shit out of him for about 30 seconds until I got fed up, zoomed around him, and gave him the finger". And because you were tailgating and then sped around to the right, the driver could NOT safely pass. Had the driver tried to do that, your two vehicles would have collided. Again I see no violation of laws.

Its the speed limit. This mean it is the maximum speed you are allowed to travel. It does not mean that you must travel at this speed.

You're right, it doesn't mean that.

But you're also required to keep right and yield the left lanes to faster traffic. Impeding the flow of traffic is also unsafe and, in fact, a moving violation.

If a driver is not going to keep up with the flow of traffic, he or she needs to stick to the rightmost lane.

While this statement was meant to incite, it does seem to represent the attitude of a lot of drivers around here.
Traffic would be less of a problem if people would show a little courtesy and move when they see people coming up fast behind them.
But that will never happen it seems, so hopefully all of the douches who do purposely get in other drivers way will get in horrific crashes and slowly burn to death in their mangled cars.

Funny, I think the same thing about the asshat that flies up behind me doing 90, when I'm doing 75 in a 65 and won't give me time to either speed up or slow down to get over. I always hope that I come up on them in a few miles in flames and impaled on the divider. Fuck those guys.

I can sympathize with that. It's frustrating when I'm already going 10-15mph over the limit and people still tailgate. I just get out of their way as soon as I can...
