Should Gov't $$$ Pay to Remove Facial Gang Tattoos?

SHould the federal government use your taxpayer dollars to laser off facial tattoos from gang members?
I understand the argument, it will help people become more employable, but OTOH, it may help people evade detection, or it may just be a cosmetic gift to someone who wants to replace one facial tattoo with another.
Bill Maher takes the route of "a suit and tie being an investment" for job opportunites and has a point there. But why is the government being asked to invest?
It's a silly argument in that the amounts of government money spent are miniscule, but the point is principle, not the cost.
The hosts are a couple of complete douchebags- Bill Maher, a smug New Yawker who has worked in comedy his entire life and Roy Maddow, a really ugly son-of-a-bitch and a latent Communist in his own right.

Of course the government should not pay for tattoo removal.. While this guy (with facial tattoos) was busy risking AIDS and performing mandatory acts of violence, other inmates read, learned and obtained degrees. Some learn trades and earn a small pittance so they can get the proper clothes, tools etc that will be required to re-enter the workforce. I think the tattooed gangstar should get nothing but a 90% chance of returning to the clank.

I, for one, won't get upset about my tax dollars being used to help a gang member turn his life around and get on the straight and narrow. If that includes tattoo removal, so be it. Hopefully the investment will return dividends when that gang member gets a job and becomes a tax payer as well.
If you want to get wrapped around the axle about something, get bent up about the prison industry in this country. Privatized prisons have no incentive to try to rehabilitate inmates. More inmates means more funding, so why bother trying to prevent offenders from reoffending? Create a revolving door and every time the inmate comes back, some more state money comes with him. Yum yum, Government Cash!

Can't say I've ever been to prison, but from what I've seen and read about them I can understand that they have about as much to do with rehabilitation as a sausage grinder.

Sounds like a good idea for a charity. There are laready charities out there that try to collect high quality business atire and give it to deserving individuals who are looking for jobs. Why not do the same thing with this?

To operate a tat removal laser in Virginia, you must have completed something like a 2 year course in dermatology. It takes more book learning than just pointing and shooting the contraption. I think you would be hard presses to find many cons willing to dedicate themselves to that training/
I do think tat removal is going to be a huge industry soon with all the girls with tramp stamps and stupid little tats becoming middle ages and trying to change their look.

And again, people looking to the government to correct their lives. How many times do they have to be disapointed before they realize all the government is good for is putting them in jail?

it's actually not expensive at all, you just need someone trained (not costly at all) and the proper facilities to do it. i think giving them the option is a good idea. it's best they make an informed decision as to how much it will improve their chances of not ending up back in prison. if it's their choice then it's far more likely that they wont just have themselves tattooed all over again. if you are uninformed, tattoo removal takes multiple sessions, so it's a commitment.

No one here honestly thinks that a gang member can go back to his community, go through many sessions that do visible damage to the gangs signs, symbols etc and expect to not get kilt. Blood in, Blood out.
