My first motorcycle, at the ripe old age of 16, came from MW (Benelli 125cc); bought it for $75, converted it to a motocrosser (including self-designed expansion chamber, etc), road it into the ground off-road, then sold it for $125 to a guy who wanted to use the engine for a go-kart - that would have been a really nice 4-speed go-kart!:

They probably got the naming rights for a song. But the Monkey Wards brand is so negative at this point, it's like buying poison and thinking it's a vitamin.

I thought Wards was awesome! I remember the wards automotive service center at springfield mall, they would sell me new ball joints and control arm bushings for my 77 fairmont every year. They truly cared about my safety.

If Wards was so awesome, why did they go under? The Wards name was obviously a liability toward the end. I liked Wards well enough. But if I'm going to buy something online, it most likely will be through Amazon.

Their prices were undercut by Walmart, and to a lesser degree Target and Kmart.

I liked Wards, but if I can get the same quality cheaper, I'm shopping elsewhere.

+1 on the Amazon comment, just price shopped a bunch of electronics and ended up getting everything online after visiting HH Gregg, Best Buy, et al. The brick and mortar stores let me see the items in person, but couldn't beat the Amazon prices.

Not to mention Amazon has better cutomer "service" then Best Buy. While there's no staff to talk to on Amazon, you get to read reviews and they are good with returns. Best Buy exposes you to clueless morons and their return policy is lacking.

One time I ordered something online from Best Buy for pickup at the store. What a horrendous waste of tine that was. I couldn't find anyone to help me, then I needed to produce all this ID. It would have been much quicker to buy the stuff in the store.

I'm also sure that bringing in a new Montgomery Ward store as an anchor store for the Manassas Mall would be a great fit. They already have a Super Walmart as one of their anchor stores.

That actually wasn't MY bike, just an image I found with a quick image search for "montgomery ward 125cc motorcyxle". I believe the bike in that image is for sale. The search yielded numerous hits, many for sale.

My 125 had a teardrop tank - might have been a Wards special tank! It also had knobbies (I added those) and noncovered rear shocks (those, too, might have been some sort of Wards special), etc. I had also completely stripped the electric - no lights, no battery, etc - strictly magneto.

Long, LONG time ago, Wards was a pretty nice department store and catalog merchandiser. Sears used to be a great store LONG ago!

K-Mart tried but Wal-Mart succeeded in violating the gentleman's agreement against cutthroat competition. Lots of great chains and local independents went belly up by Wal-Mart's predatory pricing games to destroy them.

Wal-Mart couldn't have done what they did without Bill Clinton, George Fucking Bush, and the banksters to help them weather the price wars in order to destroy Main Street. The fact that Wal-Mart is based out of a corrupt Third World tyranny like Arkansas says it all.

The High Cost of Low Prices is all around us. Was it worth it???

I remember at the end buying a pair of shoes from Wards. They were complete shit. The quality was worse than Wal-Mart, yet the prices were just as high as Sears.

The problem with Wards is the department store model is dead. Why Sears, Macy's, etc, cling to it, I don't know. They should all move check outs to the front like Kohl's has. I hate going to a department store and then trying to track down some fucking clerk who then takes 20 minutes to take the tags off of three shirts.

Sears/kmart is hanging on because sears/A&E service is the largest in home service company in the world. A&E was wards service dept but Sears bought them out before the Kmart takeover. A&E now does service for best buy, Lowes and about 10 other retailers. Sears tries to keep this quiet but most people know.
Sears will send an A&E truck on a sears service call but they will never send a sears truck on a A&E call. Best buy does not want a sears truck in the driveway of one of their customers.
The three most profitable in home services are gasoline powered equipment, exercise equipment and heating & air. small tractors are very popular in this country and they need lots of service.

Sears is a hardware store that happens to sell a few clothes.

I'm not surprised Montgomery Wards is back.

Hechinger came back online only just a few years after closing their doors but now I see they've gone again.

I would not let an A&E employee near any of my appliances...

A&E is the worst....

If anyone is offered a service contract for appliances, I advise them to find out who will show up at the door when a problem arises..

My dad took me to M-Wards and got me a brand new red 125cc back in in 66. So I could get a job.... I was was 16, almost 6'2 and ~190lbs, so I thought I looked pretty ridiculous on it, but he wouldn't let me get the 175cc! I don't think I ever got it to go more than 50mph (tops), but I sure wish I had it now. We lived in Imperial Beach Ca, and I would ride it from I.B. to 32nd Street, to work in the mess hall there. My 1st and last "motorcycle".

The main reason that wards went under, were that they were hiring people with no experience, Shifting them around to different department. Then took away the catalog. Auctually wards always had the catalog, because nothing was ever in stock, you had to order it from the catalog. Stupid business model.

Management keep trying to save money, sales and sales even for automotive work. Most Everyone was cut throat or kiss ups. I even think managers were paid cash if their expenses went down for the month. No soap, rags, brake clean for the customers cars. WE in automotive could actually get written up for helping a customer.

Then after the great remodel things started to really look up, it was cool to shop in some departments. But again, they got rid of the cafeteria and greating card section. They nust have wasted millions. That money could have been used as gift cards, or better yet Barbecues every friday. Movie tickets, concert tickets.

Another thing, wards concentrated on not getting sued, more and more kinds of automotive work was no longer being performed. Wards motto was the customer is always right, Stupid, they lost so much money from from stupid scammers and dumb people, A big problem was the service writers writing work orders for the tech. Customer would say leaks water or dies out, BUT the techs needed more info, was the engine cold, warm or hot, Then the customer would walk around when we had an estimate allready to start the work, stupid customers would come back later and ask if their car was finished. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Wards was so jacked up, I once told loss prevention that managers were stealing, I seen them both put stereos in thier vehicles. It was part of my job to report theft.

So I told this one guy in loss pervention about what I had seen, Then he went and told the managers about what I said about them, It was a full 180 from company policy. Of course I was forced out, but I did come back and say hi to everyone, as the stores were being shut down.

Nope. Monkey Wards is NOT coming back. LONG TIME AGO, when Americans understood that quality and customer service carried a price, we used to enjoy shopping at stores like Sears, Macy's, Monkey Wards, JC Penney. Including local department stores that often carried really good stuff. If you want to buy good value, have staff to help you, and enjoy being in a store with DECENT WHITE PEOPLE, then you FUCKING PAY FOR IT. Discount stores were for lower-class people.

Even discount stores, like Zayers, TG&Y, Army-Navy Eagle, etc. were nicer than any Wal-Mart of today.

Some foreign hacks PURCHASED the name, "Montgomery Ward," and that's ALL that's coming back. It will NOT be like reliving the 1960's and walking into a shiny well-staffed store with lots of great merch. This MW will be nothing more than a branding label for some new China-Mart to compete with Wal-Mart and Amazon.

Hey pops, your 80th birthday is coming up. I can get you a couple of vinyl records from this new, awesome singer from Richmond named Meade Skelton. He has boyish good looks and is a very talented singer songwriter who sings about old fashioned values. Who knows, he may make a surprise appearance and sing at your old folks home and you can get him to autograph your records!!!!!

Just got me a new toaster oven from Wards. With my Montgomery wards credit card I only pay 7 dollars a month!
