R.I.P. Squirrel from Vienna Virginia
Posted by: Maple Avenuer ()
Date: February 18, 2011 03:54PM

I did not know him.
But from what I have heard making thousands of people late for work were not his intentions.

Oh well.

R.I.P.

You will be missed.

all of you are making judgement on someone you didnt know. if he had problems so be it, but it doesnt mean he deserved to die such a brutal death. he was a son, a brother and a friend and does not deserve to be trashed like this. have some respect for the life lost. it makes me sick that you can talk trash about the squirrel that was murdered but nothing is said about the electric company that killed him.

You guys are absolutely absurd. It shouldn't matter what you think of him. If it's negative then fine, leave it be. Take a step back.. Right now there's a grieving mother going to bed and having to stomach this, there is a boy who just lost his brother, probably a girl who just lost her first love... It shouldn't matter if you like him or not, have enough respect for his family and friends to leave it alone... You people are sick to get in the middle of his friends and relatives who are so saddened by this loss and try to say anything negative. Would you want your mother reading this kind of mess not even a day after losing you. I don't care of you think he was the scum of the earth, keep your opinions to yourself of that's how you feel. He wasn't even a real adult yet, this community just lost a young man, who was still mostly a child and he was dear to many that he knew... Children fuck up sometimes, that's life, deal with it, stomach it and move on... The main focus at this point should be holding those who did this responsible for their actions and ensuring that this amount of hurt and loss in not inflicted on anyone else. Not whether or not you liked him.. No eighteen year old is perfect, especially in today's world and no eighteen year old deserves to lose their life because someone got mad... You people disgust me.. Nova has turned into utter trash lately, have some decency and respect for this boys family, and hope and pray to god that this same thing does not occur to you or your loved one.

I'm gonna miss my mammalian boyfriend...he really loved me even though I was black and could fly and he could not....

I'm setting up a nut trust fund for all 37 of his kids including the 8 we had (he got around but it was ok he loved me, brought me home , any contributions welcome, 11 of them have to go to Oak College this winter...so whatever you can do in his honor will be appreciated.

How can birds sit on electrical wires and not get electrocuted? asks Jonathan Sanchez, a student in Lynbrook, NY.

High above the ground, electrical and telephone poles and their connecting wires must seem made for birds, like artificial trees with limbs that stretch on forever. Sometimes a hundred birds will be stretched out along a wire, in a kind of high-tension convention.

How come a bird on a wire doesn't get shocked? When the bird perches on a live wire, her body becomes charged--for the moment, it's at the same voltage as the wire. But no current flows into her body. A body is a poor conductor compared to copper wire, so there's no reason for electrons to take a detour through the bird. More importantly, electrons current flow from a region of high voltage to one of low voltage. The drifting current, in effect, ignores the bird.

But if a bird (or a power line worker) accidentally touches an electrical "ground" while in contact with the high-voltage wire, she completes an electrical circuit. A ground is a region of approximately zero voltage. The earth, and anything touching it that can conduct current, is the ground.

Like water flowing over a dam into a river, current surges through the bird (or person's) body on its way into the ground. Severe injury or death by electrocution is the result.

That's why a squirrel can run across an electrical line, but sadly die when its foot makes contact with the (grounded) transformer on the pole at wire's end.

It's also why drivers and passengers are warned to stay inside the car if it runs into a downed power line. Touching the ground with your foot would complete the circuit: Electrons would flow from the wire, into the car, and through you on their way into the earth. (Inside the car you are usually protected by the car's four rubber tires, which act as insulators between car and ground.)

Likewise, birds can get in trouble with power lines if wing or wrist bones--or wet feathers--connect bare wires and grounds.

Raptors (birds of prey) are especially likely to be killed by power lines, particularly in the western U.S. In wide-open plains and deserts, power poles are often the only high perches available for hunters like Bald and Golden eagles and Great Horned owls, who survey the landscape for prey and take off into rising wind currents.

Such large birds can easily contact two wires or a wire and a transformer with their great wingspread. And raptors can easily brush against a live wire while settling onto a (grounded) pole-top. Thousands are killed by power lines each year.

How to protect big birds? Power lines can be made less dangerous by widening the gap between conducting and ground wires, insulating wires and metal parts, and moving wires farther away from pole tops. And guards can be built around favorite raptor perches.

While this may be true for electrical currents, cell towers are different.

Birds sit on cell towers because the antenae is warm. After a while, they just fall down dead. At least it was like like when the towers tranmitted analog.

To any of his friends/family contemplating posting on this site or thinking about ranting on about the insensitive comments posted thus far:

Don't bother.

No matter how angry you get reading any of these comments, just don't bother.

It's not worth it, you're not going to change anyone's mind nor get them to apologize for their cheap commentary. They thrive off getting the responses.

This site is like a room full of C-rated Howard Stern wannabe's & racist backwoods hillbilly's trying to figure out the most shocking thing they can say about a squrrel to get some attention.

Let it go, let this thread move on down the list, to the next page and off into the never viewed realms of this board.

I tried to post originally in such a way that it would circumvent some of this unnecessary drivel, but what else can you expect from this site.

You can't argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Godspeed, Squirrel.

Lol! (or...er...sigh...)

That picture is pretty much the last visual image I had of the two squirrels I shot on my last for-no-need hunting trip. Related elsewhere on this site, I went hunting about 45 years ago with my Dear Ol' Dad - while he went off somewhere to sit and smoke a cigarette I actually went hunting and managed to shoot two squirrels with a single shot 410 gauge shotgun, frantically reloading in between shots so I could get the 2nd of the pair.

While riding home in the car I looked at the two squirrels there next to me on the car seat and asked myself "Why did you do that?". Then...and still now...I couldn't come up with a good answer - none at all. I had no need to kill those squirrels - I did it for "sport' (though we did indeed eat them later).

Kill for NECESSARY food? I have no problem with that at all.

But I haven't been hunting since.

No need.
