hamstring tears, how long to heal.

I have a hamstring injury (minor) situated on the posterior of patellar. I know it is a hamstring, had it evaluated by an Ortho. MD. Question: How long does it take to heal, I've had mine for about 2 months and it gets better, then returns, it is a cycle of pain, no pain. How long is the healing period, this is nuts.

In a word, forfuckingever. In a couple of words, several months.

Heat and slow stretching will be your friend.

Ask ThePackLeader. The odds are good that he's been through the exact same thing.

Six months. If you are a runner, switch to the cycling machine if you have access to one. A pain in the ass, but do not run and aggravate the injury. Spoken with experience.

I'd say go back to your ortho if you're still experiencing pain.

WhiteRussian nails it though, if you're a highly active person, you're going to want to go really easy (i.e. swimming, cycling, rowing) for ~4-6 months before you start your high impact activities again. In 9/10 you'll be just fine with active rest, if the pain flares up just w simple walking or activities then definitely see your ortho.

When it flares up is it because you're doing something that's highly impacting you? Or is it just a random pain. And if there is a pain where do you feel it and what does it feel like. Hard to diagnose you based on your little blurb.

And for eesh's sake - just want to mention I'm a door greeter at Walmart - so I'm not experienced for any medical advice...just had to throw it out there so he'd stfu.

Right, and thanks, last thing, will wearing a device like a tubular sleeve help. I mean a knee brace and should it be somewhat tight or loose if worn.

A knee support w patella stabilizers will provide some support - you should wear it snugly against you...(i.e. not too tight or loose - too lose and it doesn't provide any support). If you're feeling pain even before you put on the brace - I wouldn't then start doing whatever activity you had planned. The point is to not be in pain then wear the brace to help provide additional support. Does that make sense?

What is it your doing when the pain occurs and when you get relapses is it random or activity specific?

Pain has been chronic for the past 2 months (more/less). It appears to develop as the result of inactivity, specifically, waking up in the morning is the zenith period, getting up (out of bed) is challenging but then the pain and stiffness subsides in intensity, location of pain remains same. Activity is not really a factor I would say as a cause of the pain in itself, inactivity is. Pain is localized at posterior region of patellar, left knee, occasionally extending down calf, but this is a rarity. Ice/Heat what do you think?Elevation does seem to have an effect on tightness in a positive manner. Thanks Doc.

Hello Maureen - the proximal patellar tendon (which you're having problems with i.e. tendonitis) extends from your patella (knee) downwards towards your calf.

The standard treatment is RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation.

Rest - requires no explanation
Ice - best way is to apply ice in a bag w water, the water applies the cold directly to the skin. Don't use chemical ice packs, they can be too cold and can actually cause frostbite.
Compression - as discussed earlier - use an elastic sort of wrap to minimize swelling from the sprain.
Elevation - no explanation.

Also, some anti-inflammatory medications will help - aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen.

Another option would be a TENS unit, the TENS unit could help lessen the pain - I have one at home and use it when I have a neck or back pull.

I know I'm just rabbiting on here so I'll try and shut up in a minute but if naught is working and the inflammation continues you could see about getting an injection of cortisone-like medicine. This will relieve chronic tendinitis but cortisone can sometimes cause its own set of problems. If after you've tried the RICE method and you're still feeling pain/stiffness - go back to your ortho and see what they can recommend.
