National internet ID cards/certificates on the way; first no fly lists, now this. BTW, the Gestapo and the SS loved making lists! :(

The one positive is that it will be easier to track all the perverted trolls on the internet!

Funny.

However, in all seriousness, this could lead to the creation of virtual FBI/Hoover-like files of any famous person's internet surfing habits. Anyone famous or political will have to watch over their shoulder for Big Brother on the internet! :(

Too late. Read any recent book by James Bamford or Trevor Paglan.

You're kidding yourself if you think this isn't possible already.

I know it happens...that's how they catch the pedobears, but they bring the deserved attention upon themselves.

I think one of the founding precepts of the internet is anonymity. I fully understand terrorists and predators need to be stopped, but can't they do it with out IDing everyone on the net?

Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. "I don't have to get a credential if I don't want to," he said. There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge," and "we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this," he said.

Yeah right! This is the perfect opportunity for the government to track online behavior.

Blessed are the murderous.

are multiple IDs allowed?

I'm hoping this is akin to OpenID. Seriously, I dont want to be using the same login info that I would use on ICHC as I do for my bank lest an lolcat obtain my information and make a bank transfer to his account in Nigeria. If I could have separate ones for untrusted sites, online stores and financial sites, then count me in. However, if it's all or nothing, forget it.

As usual, if you actually read the article and go beyond the scary "Obama wants to control you" headline, you see there isn't actually anything menacing about this.

The move also is likely to please privacy and civil liberties groups that have raised concerns in the past over the dual roles of police and intelligence agencies.

"We are not talking about a national ID card," Locke said at the Stanford event. "We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities."

Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. "I don't have to get a credential if I don't want to," he said. There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge," and "we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this," he said.

OF COURSE THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WOULD WASTE OUR TIME
AND TAX DOLLARS CREATING SUCH A USELESS/POINTLESS ENTITY.
