Best Buy going the way of Blockbuster?

I disagree with Best Buy on their citing of weaker demand of televisions and entertainment gadgets. I think I'll cite weaker demand for getting televisions and entertainment gadgets at Best Buy.

Best Buy's Profit Declines 4.4%, Trails Analysts' Estimates

Best Buy Co. , the world’s largest consumer-electronics retailer, lowered its annual earnings forecast and reported an unexpected 4.4 percent drop in third- quarter profit, citing weaker demand for televisions and entertainment gadgets in the U.S.

About 5 years ago when I was looking at TVs, Myer Emco was still in business. At that time, they indicated they (at the time) had to sell 3 TVs just to make the same profit as selling one TV just a few years earlier. I'm sure warehouse clubs, Wal-Mart, etc. are all cutting into Best Buy's sales in a big way. Also, when you make a purchase from Best Buy, they usually try to pressure you into buying an extended warranty. People saying "no" to these warranties is probably also cutting into their profits.

I think Best Buy is seeing that HDTVs are now experiencing price competition. People aren't willing to fork out $3K or $4K anymore. That, and the fact that there aren't really any new game systems out means lower demand (besides that stupid Kinect thing that supposedly can't see black people...way to go Microsoft and your soft bias of low expectations!)

I think Best Buy is diversified enough to make it through long term. Of course, people probably said that about Circuit City.

However, I do think that Best Buy is now becoming the target of a lot of abuse - much of it justified for its complete abuse of its "warranty policy", its 15% restocking fees, and its draconian return policy. I recognize that we're talking about electronics that have a very fast depreciation rate, but still.

Two weeks ago I was at Best Buy. I watched a black guy struggle to play Deca Sports with the Kinect that was on display.

Regarding Best Buy's declining sales, two years ago I bought my last TV from Amazon sight unseen for 15% less than what I could have at BB. I only go to BB to look at a product then I order it online from Amazon or Newegg.

I guess that explains why the Al Jolson-Kinect ad campaign was an abject failure

+1

Did the exact same thing recently with 52" HDTV, home theater and Bose speakers.

Amazon rocks.

I think Gamestop will go the way of Blockbuster way before Best Buy. There will always be a demand for an electronics store, I think Best Buy should be worried about a smarter, better competitor that will destroy them the way Best Buy did Circuit City.

Blessed are the murderous.
