I just got home from taking my kid back to JMU now that the turkey day break is over. The stories these kids tell me are amazing, Seems like everyone is drunk and or high and or screwing.
I cant beleive I had 50 bucks a week taken out of my paycheck and put in the 529 plan for 20 years to pay for a drunken sexfest.
I went to Longwood 30+ years ago and we only got drunk on weekends and I was too Fat to get laid much.
Are all college's like this or is JMU outstanding in this area ?

Chuckhoffmann, who posts here on a regular basis, had a daughter that went to JMU for a year. He was telling us that his daughter got pregnant her first year there, and had to be taken twice to the hospital for alcohol poisoning (while pregnant.)

Every college is not like this. While ofcourse drinking, drugs and sex occur at every college, it does happen a lot more at James Madison than ever before. Radford always had that rep, but JMU's reputation has fallen drastically over the last few years.

Not everyone at JMU is like that.

See, the thing about Radford is the people that go there are already pros.

I am sorry you are now thinking about what your kids are doing. If kids learn to handle being away from home BEFORE they leave they are much better off. I think the drinking age should be 18. It is not. Teach your kids to drink at home and NOT drive.

I have taught all my children this (4) and they are all grateful.

If it is any consolation, JMU was nothing like an episode out of Caligula when I was there. Even if it that is true now (I don't think it is) there is certainly no requirement that a sensible son or daughter participate or hang out with those who do. If that is going on in the dorms, then 1) shit I missed out, and 2) she can move off-campus next year and be done with those distractions.

Sounds similar to the stories that we told when I was in college. Most of the stories were overblown then, and I am guessing most are now. I suspect that if chastity, abstinence and hard work were the things that college kids loved to boast about, every kid would be describing themselves as Snow White. Still if you thought your kid was going to school to study and to behave in the same way you thought they were in high school, even the truth might seem a bit much.

I remember JMU. I went there back in the dark ages. But I do remember TKE house (now a B & B I think!) and the wild parties that supposedly went on there. Self-respecting girls dared not walk in the door. I remember one girl thought she could fly out the top floor window (LSD I think) and landed pretty hard.

Things were better back when the drinking age for beer/wine was 18 IMHO. I don't remember anyone "pre-gaming" or beer-bonging back then. But then, my memory maybe fogged. We did not have the money or resources back then that kids do now. No one had a credit card or a cell phone.

Sex- yes - but not orgies. If there were any, I missed those.

College kids have been getting drunk, high and laid since the beginning of time. But now with idiotic drinking laws and helicopter parents, kids are letting loose more than ever.

You parents out there who don't let their kids drink before they reach the age of 21: What do you think they do when they get to college?

My buddy used to nail the hottest girls down there. He's awesome, but like a 5 on a 10 scale and he's dating these 8's and 9's. Supposedly the low ratio of men to women is responsible for that. Long story short, he gets out of college and wonders why he can't land total hotties while being a comlete slob. You got to take it while you can, but you should remember that in the big picute, you're really not that cool, JMU dudes.

sounds like some peeps are down on RU whats up with that? look at the available records of arrests/incidents involving alcohol/drugs for all VA schools and RU is way down on the list and it is broken down by school size as well. dont get me wrong we party but we know how to handle ourselves unlike some of the other students at other schools (ie, tech, jmu,longwood)

I think the surprise is stems from the fact that sex is so open these days. I went to college when the internet was in its formative stage and things like persiankitty.com were way out there.

Some states had 529 plans from the late 80s. 529 was a state plan long before the feds got involved. We started ours in 1992 while living in Michigan.

Well the stories are true. I know someone who went there and told me that 1/3 of the men are gay. Almost 40% of the women are bi-sexual. The ratio of women to men is almost 3 to 1. So what do you think is going on over there. Also, there a bunch of meth labs. It is meth capital of the East Coast.

My parents made sure I knew how to handle myself when drunk young, like 16. They would rather us drink at home than in the streets. Trust me, after the 2nd 2-day hangover I gave up on drinking to get drunk.

Now I simply enjoy a beer or glass of wine moreso for the flavor or to accompany good food. Sometimes a drink or 3 in the club or out to eat with friends but never past 3. I'd rather smoke ;)

It may not be the schools fault or the parents fault. Young adults make their own decisions especially when they go away to school. It doesnt change the fact though that JMU is quickly being known as a party school and for whatever reason drinking is becoming a problem there.

If half of these kids paid they're own way through college, there would be a lot less drinking and bullshit going on around every campus. It's Mommy and Daddy's money right so who cares?

Don't bet on it. It was another time but when I was in school (ok that was many years ago) the kids who were paying their own way were just as likely to be getting bombed as those who weren't. Some people can drink without becoming irresponsible jerks; others can't; and others were irresponsible jerks before they started drinking.

Well, you got half your name right. "Pull it"? "perfect piece"? Does your girlfriend realize what a jerk you are?

JMU is definitely getting pretty bad. A lot of it comes from the kids that don't even go to college and live around that area. A lot of people goto blue ridge community college and live in the JMU housing area. Worse than that, there is NOTHING else to do in that town or anywhere near it, so a lot of people come from Staunton and cause a lot of issues.

The Frat scene is even worse. Women getting drugged on a nightly basis, hazing is pretty bad too. I remember going into the Sigma Chi basement and seeing 4 pledges drinking out of a keg with a 4 way tap on it, each having their own tap. They had trashbags that they stick their head through so that they could vomit into them and continue drinking, they weren't allowed out of the room until they finish. If you think that's bad it's just the tip of the iceberg.

Make your kid go to community college first, not only will you save money, you can try to teach them responsibility before they go. 18-19 is way too young to be out on your own, especially the first time being at college.

Those dorms make it impossible to avoid the party scene, there's just no way around it.

You're right, maybe I used the wrong word when I said responsibility....it's really hard to prepare anyone for the experience, and there's no telling how your kid is going to react under certain circumstances.

You can try to be involved with your kids lives as much as possible, but the reality is there's so much you don't know about them especially when it comes to who they socialize with outside of your direct supervision.

It's more than teaching them responsibility, and I just think 18-19 is too young to be let out on your own considering all of the temptations that are out there. I'm not trying to be a negative person here, but you still don't see the big picture at that age, and school still is viewed as an obstacle you have to deal with in order to enjoy the college experience.

Just think about sitting them out for a year and do community college then live off campus at a university after that. IF they go to JMU stay away from Ashby, the Commons, and Hunter's Ridge....the rifraff/kids that live there and don't goto college love those apartments.

It is really difficult to screw up too badly in college. I went to a top 50 public university, not in Virginia. It is hardly known for partying, but there was a segment who never went out and if you went out, you saw a lot of familiar faces after a couple years despite having an enrollment of 12k students.

Did I scorch the Earth with stellar grades the first couple years? Hell no. Did I party hard and not pay too dearly for it? Sure did. Honestly I would have been Dean's List if I just showed up to class a bit more. I wrapped up my senior year on Dean's List, still went out basically Tuesday-Saturday night and worked 25 hours a week. A couple months after graduation, I had a job. So did all of my boozing buddies. Today we all make good money despite being under 30.

Go somewhere with a decent program for what you want to do. Get drunk, but don't get arrested and don't drive. Get laid but don't be stupid and not wrap it up. Avoid the drugs if you plan on trying to work as a fed or contractor with a clearance. Show up for class every now and then. It really isn't rocket science.

My daughter graduated from JMU and is now a 4th grade teacher. Great school and she will remember her time then for the rest of her life. It's what you instill in your children BEFORE they go off on their own that makes the difference not the school. ALL college's have drugs, sex and alcohol it's up to your children to decide
