Thinking about joining a commune
Posted by: Sky Spirit ()
Date: November 12, 2010 02:36AM

Found a commune called Twin Oaks Intentional Community and it's in Louisa county. I'm thinking about living there. http://www.twinoaks.org/index.html You get housing, food, and healthcare from the commune. You're expected to work 42 hours a week supporting the community business which includes tofu making and producing soysocks.

The people that live there look like they enjoy their lives.

I worked for a moving company one summer in college. We moved some people to a commune. They seemed semi-normal until I realized that the kids called every man daddy, not just their own father. That kind of freaked me out.

Just was reading their website...you know what irks me is this:
"We request a $5.00 donation per person for the tour. "

It's not a donation when it's requested. It's a fee. A donation implies giving on ones own free will...at least to me.

If you're up for joining by all means give it a go, you forfeit everything basically in doing so it seems, but that in a sense is freedom. Tisn't my cup of tea, but if you go and have a chance to report back, let us know what you think.

Guy on the right, his name is "Wizard."

Guy on the left looks like he took Wizard's magic stick up his little anus.

You can get the same thing under Obama without having to work.

The only passable one is the second from the left. Maybe the first on the left but possible pregnant or she just stands funny.

Very few communes are successful unless it's members are
already financially well off. Many start up but few remain
after a couple of years. Internal squabbles, children, and
lack of privacy are usually their downfall. Back in the
early 70's I lived in one for a year and a half and it started
going to Hell after six months. People leave and new people
come in but in reality it rarely works.

3rd from right looks male or transgender.

Louisa must be a big county. There's another agrarian community called Acorn.

I would imagine they do not allow members to own firearms which leaves out 99% of the posters on this board.

According to the website you get to keep your personal finances and work to support the commune. They have IRS status so they must be somewhat organized.

I would say the requirement to work to support the commune leaves out many of the bums and freeloaders. They can just ask Uncle Obama to take care of their needs without working.
