Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
According to folk wisdom, when the brown bands on fall woolly caterpillars are narrow, it means a harsh winter is coming. The wider the brown band, the milder the winter will be.
Earlier this fall I found two in the garden that had more black than brown. Guess what I saw at my house this morning....two that were fucking ALL black. Not a brown band on those little bastards. Come on snow, let's do it again this year!!!

When I was a kid I used to like these wooly critters, especially
the ones with the red bad around the belly. I found a couple of
these wooly caterpillars last year and put them in a terrarium
with some pet frogs. About a month later they both wrapped themselves
up in in cocoons and emerged UGLY MOTHS!
