Too cold to run: wat do!?

So it'll be getting colder soon here in Fairfax. What are you runners going to do to keep up on your cardio? This thread assumes that treadmills suck.

Damm, when I was younger I still ran in 12" snow. I would also swim at the Co. indoor pools. Now I post on FFXU

Go to a sports store and get some Patagonia Capilene long sleeved tops and leggings and a fleece zip-up .And cover your head.

You can still run when it's cold out. you just have to have the right gear.

Just make sure you are not out at 4am MeFisto time!

I wait for the cold so I can run! Every other time of year I'm either too hot, or my allergies are killing me when I go for long jogs.

Buy a treadmill. It might suck, but it's better than sitting on your ass.

+1 on having the right gear. Training for marathons such as National and Boston means winter running, and dreadmills just don't cut it.

Try some yaks over your shoes...snow chains for your Sauconys

X2. Underarmor sell a range of excellent coldweather gear. It's very lightweight, but keeps you at a good temperature. I make sure to wear a wool/fleece hat and some thin gloves, too. I've been running with the temp in the low 20s and had no problems. Of course, ice/snow can ruin that plan...

There is always the GMU Field House which has a nice indoor track.

Just go over, head for a locker room looking like you know where you are going and that you belong there.

Have a nice run.

You have got to be kidding. Too cold to run? Former serious runner here from the upper midwest. Pretty competitive in the top ranks some time ago. Virginia is a walk in the park from a weather perspective. We trained all year around, and can only remember a few days where we were forced inside. I have never found a day too cold to run here. Really, the thought that Fairfax is too cold of a place to run is absurd.

I used to live in Alaska. I ran down to 20 below. It just doesn't get cold enought here to not run.

I sweat too much to run outside in the cold, I guess I need to go with the treadmill.

Running in the cold sucks, but you have to do it.

I never knew a real runner who gave a damn what the weather was. In fact , your average compulsive endorphin addicted runner often runs in unsafe conditions , snow, ice , traffic.
Besides, the very act of long distance running warms you right up, just keep those heads and hands covered.

This is great running weather. In the summer I do more biking than running, but in the winter it's the opposite. Running while it's snowing is a great pleasure. Learn to dress appropriately and you'll be fine.

P90X in your basement! Or just gain a ton of weight over the winter.

the OP is joking.

runners like cool temperatures. for me, 50-55 degrees is perfect. marathon runners probably like it cooler.

damn my stupid knee. i hate my knee. my left knee.

everything goes wrong on the left side of me.

Too cold to run? Are you fucking serious? Fuck all that Underarmor and skins bullshit. Go old school, 1970s style. Get some sweats on, get your pansy ass out in the cold, and start running. If you were Italian or from Philly, you'd understand how to not be such a pussy.

I actually switch over to running when it gets cool (from cycling/tennis/kayaking), temps from 55 on down are great for running imo.

But you're not asking that...so...hiking is great when it's cool. But that usually requires a full day. If you have the room in your house for an exercise room - I have a concept 2 rower - great machines - full body workout and I'm exhausted after 30 minutes - I try and pull ~7,300+ meters at a 6 setting in 30min. You can buy a new concept 2 for ~$800.

+1 After a few minutes of running, you really don't feel the cold anymore.
