Do bands like Tool or Primus really count as power trios?

They're three-man bands, but I always consider "power trios" to be the genre of 70s hard rock/arena rock with three band members.

I love bands like Nirvana and The Thermals, but i wouldn't really label them as power trios.

WingNut's post made me laugh because whenever I hear the term "power trio" I immediately think of Triumph for some odd reason.

Yeah, I wasn't sure. I thought about ELP, but they aren't really a "power" band. I thought about Triumph, too. They are like the stereotypical power trio.

God, that was some shit. We have one of rock's premiere drummers and one of its best blues guitarists, so let's replace them with a drum machine and synth.

ZZ Top's "Sleeping Bag" is the greatest heavy metal song ever recorded.

It's only because you know more about music than I do that I'm going to gleefully point out that Tool has 4 people.

Wolfmother is cool, I heard the song a few times beforre but never knew the band name. The bass player doing double duty on keyboards gets extra credit. The vocals are Zep like but the music is a different animal altogether.

Here's a post yesterday I returned to and was the inspiration for this one-

Actually, I posted Tool. I know they have three "core" members. Kind of like how Nirvana had three core members, but would use guys like Pat Smear now and again.

lol, of course I'm joking. There was some loser-kid in my hometown who always dressed "metal"; long hair, leather jacket, judas priest t-shirts; but his favorite band was ZZ Top and I remember him really rocking out to "Sleeping Bag". I sorta never could understand that, other than he was a fuckin retard.

I was joking. I'm sure ZZ Top is embarrassed about that phase of their career. Just like Van Halen wouldn't have played anything from Van Halen III, if anyone named Van Halen had actually bothered showing up for the induction.

I don't know if you could count The Police; they aren't really a "power" rock band, but they were a pretty good trio.

I've always been a huge Rush fan, which is one of the reasons I don't pay attention to the HOF stuff. The HOF is run by the same sort of assholes who work for Rolling Stone magazine, which explains their general douchebagginess.

I heard the ZZ top recently went back to blues rock. I agree that MTV ruined them. Before that, Billy Gibbons was one of the best blues rock guitarists. His guitar was also recorded really well and his tones were amazing up until MTV.

I don't know about "favorite power trio," but the best power trio is in my pants.

I'm talking, of course, about my penis and my balls.

I loved SRV, but I always thought of his band as a power trio, SRV and Double Trouble:

I guess I must like these guys, since I've been listening to them a lot lately:

I'm afraid to post now because my Rush geekiness is off the scale. Saw them at Jiffy Lube back in September, amazing band.

Now they're like a cult band again, since they sell out every show instantly despite getting no airplay. I've seen them 4 times since 1984. I admit they're not for everybody, their prog sound is geeky and they change their sound on every album, and like almost no chicks show up to see them. But so what, you like what you like.

Thanks, Hatemotor, that first album is the only one with John Rutsey on drums. Band definitely went full prog when Peart joined.

I hate the term "Progressive".
What exactly does that imply? Does it mean the music and lyrics are more complex or does it describe any band that goes beyond the 3-4 chord norm?

Many of the so-called "Prog" bands like Yes and Rush just make music more suited to music aficionados, instead of for dullards.

Granted, some bands have taken it too far and some get too complicated and less musical, but most just make brilliant music.

I never sit and think, "Wow, this is really progressive" when listening to these bands. I just think of how good the musicians are and wish I could be a mere pimple on any of their asses.

I used to play in a power trio that many compared to Rush, but we were never even close to being that good. I know how hard it is to fill in the musical gaps where keyboards or second guitars might normally go. Hats off to all these bands!!

I think the term "progressive" in music refers to music which goes beyond the basic, accepted form of its genre. Rock and roll started as basic 12-bar blues with electric guitar, and by the middle of the 60s it had already branched into hippy rock and space rock and all kinds of wierd stuff, some of which is labeled "progressive", such as Pink Floyd. But what we know as 70s prog probably started with King Crimson, which used wierd time signatures, strong basslines, unconventional forms, and had a really wierd saxophone in the band.

I consider Tool to be "prog", in the sense that they put lots of emphasis on instrumentation and besides every other song is like 9 minutes long, which is something else prog bands liked to do (see "Xanadu" video above).

I've heard the term "progressive" applied to jazz and even bluegrass. But in rock I think it's generally accepted to mean bands with a sort of brainy musician thing going on.

But yeah, labels are a dime a dozen in music and don't mean much.

It's a shame the Femmes are on the outs. They had such a cool 80s underground sound and lots of instrumental talent. Brian Ritchie is a sick bassist.
